How cold is your house?

I've just come in no central heating on at the moment and looked at the thermostat and cannot believe it's only 10.7 degrees in my house it's bloody freezing. cannot afford to put the heating on during the day so I tend to wait until the evening when the dc are home to switch it on for a few hours so I'm sat here in my coat and hat! we've not even got the snow here where I am must be cold in the snowy areas. So just out of interest how cold is your house?

Heating kicks in at 21.5. It’s Baltic outside just now and heating is on. Can’t bear to be cold.

OldWeegie · 09/03/2023 13:05

Heat full on all day, and most of the night for the past week. Wavering between 10 and 13 at best. We're wrapped in duvets and blankets all the time. It's absolutely miserable.

StarrySki · 09/03/2023 13:07

18.3 degrees currently. The thermostat has been set to 18 since I got up and I still have a heated blanket on my lap!

Mythreeknights · 09/03/2023 13:08

13.9 degrees and I'm not too bad, I've got a little electric heater by my desk. But its output is negligible. I eat a lot of soup and drink tea all day long.

BrutusMcDogface · 09/03/2023 13:10

I don’t know exactly but I have been putting the heating on. Usually no higher than 20. I am home sick today too 🤢

That sounds awful! I don’t quite understand, is your heating struggling to cope with the low temperatures outside? As you say it’s full on all day.

Oblomov23 · 09/03/2023 13:10

18
Hive is set for 19.

20 in the main downstairs room, about 18 everywhere else

Whendovescry03 · 09/03/2023 13:14

Ours is 15 degrees and quite comfortable, but we don't have central heating and haven't had the fire on today. It's quite mild outside.

can you turn your boiler up, we find that keeping the boiler at the recommended 60c for efficiency is no good when it is very cold so I turn ours up to 70c for the cold spells.

scrivette · 09/03/2023 13:15

17 where I am sitting. 16 in the kitchen where DC is watching tv wrapped in a duvet as he is poorly.

DeathWinsAGolfish · 09/03/2023 13:17

It's 13 degrees outside here (SW) and 19.0 in the kitchen, no heating on but Aga is.

13! Its minus 2 here in the East Mids. It looks like Narnia outside.

Favouritefruits · 09/03/2023 13:25

14.9 had the heating on for an hour and it’s crept up to 15.9

kitchenplans · 09/03/2023 13:27

It's 12.5 degrees inside here, but that's because we're having some building work done (including fitting new rads!) and there's builders coming in and out leaving the front door open, plus we can't actually put the heating on until the rads have been connected!

This is about as cold as our house ever gets. It's normally about 13.5 when we come down in the morning after the heating is off overnight - I'm guessing the constantly left open door (which I keep shutting!) is why it's dropped even lower today.

Can't wait til the work is finished today, when I will be running the heating and getting the house up to temperature!

I don't actually need the house super warm - I'm comfortable enough in an oodie at 16 degrees, but 12.5 is just too cold for me.

DeathWinsAGolfish · 09/03/2023 13:32

@Ciri I know! It doesn't feel like it though, it's very grey and wet.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 09/03/2023 13:34

16 but I'm going to pop the heating back on soon. I work from home and have a chronic pain condition that's exacerbated by the cold so I'm extremely lucky that I can afford to put the heating on and not worry about the bill. I really feel for people who aren't in that position.

Bluebellbike · 09/03/2023 13:43

Thermostat set at 17 degrees from 7am to 10pm then 13 degrees overnight. 17 degrees is fine for me through the day. I wear a jumper though; and a blanket if I'm just sitting. Mine is a tiny house with only 4 rooms though, and takes vey little heating.

FrostyFifi · 09/03/2023 12:55

It's set at 18.5 as it usually is now. I used to have it at 21/22 until the prices went up.

I’m pretty much the same, used to be set at 21°, reduced it to 19° last winter and 18° this year. I’ve experimented with different time periods since I took early retirement and the one that suits me and my lifestyle ( in and out most days with a few days not going out) is having it on continuously from 7 am to 10 pm. I might try moving the starting time to 8 am in a few weeks when the nights are a bit warmer.

I had problems with damp in two rooms when I first moved in due to an inadequate boiler so I don’t want that issue to reoccur. I have very bad arthritis ( enough to be entitled to a Blue Badge for parking) and the cold really does make it worse.

I appreciate that I am fortunate to be able to afford my heating bills so far and hope I can continue to do so in the future.

CeriB82 · 09/03/2023 13:45

No idea. Do you all have thermometers In the rooms?

NewBootsAndRanty · 09/03/2023 13:46

Yes, and a thermostat in the hall for my heating.

Is your boiler faulty or has it always been like this? When I first moved into my house, I struggled to get the heat up to a reasonable temperature even when on for hours at a time. It turned out that the boiler was not big enough for the number of radiators especially after the previous owners did a couple of extensions.

I was able to use a lump sum from my pension when I took early retirement to change the boiler and I was really surprised by the improvement! I now only need it on for an hour for the whole house to be toasty warm and even though it is set at 12° overnight, it has never come on even in very cold spells.

It really must be miserable to be paying a fortune for heating and yet not feel warm. Is it worth getting the boiler checked by an engineer?

Very much this. Although in an ideal world we'd have it a bit warmer, seeing people having to live and work in 12 degrees puts it into perspective, I'm glad you're able to stay comfortable with your arthritis.

Raindancer411 · 09/03/2023 13:54

21, DH works from home and I currently am not working as looking after a toddler, so we need the heating on all the time. It still feels cold at 21C as of wooden floors over a cold void and high ceilings (1920s property)

Newestname002 · 09/03/2023 13:59

Its relatively mild at the moment (9 degreesC) because it's been raining and the air temperature inside the house is good. I've recently had a new heating system installed and lots of extra insulation in the loft so I'm more comfortable than previous years. Hot water bottles taken to bed Overnight for localised comfort (ankles and achy hip).

Heating is currently off until late evening and I'm wearing many thin layers (feet too) of cotton, wool, down and ankle length thick fleece so my body temperature is pretty good - and I can still easily move around to do jobs round the house. On really cold days I also wear a fleece lined woolly hat and find that helps a lot to keep me cosy. 🌹
