cptartapp · 08/03/2023 12:30

We used to pay £69 for electric each month but since January are paying £0 as we are £240 in credit. On a great fixed tariff until October.
We have oil central heating. Put £400 in last month which will see us four or five months and just waiting on the £200 government contribution back for that.
Four bed semi.

You might save a little by going onto a monthly variable direct debit.

Maximum of £45 over the course of the year. That's a price I'm willing to pay to stop the energy company from taking what they think they need to take from my account.

A variable direct debit changes month by month - unless you're not giving meter readings, it reflects the exact amount you've been billed for that period.

I pay by variable direct debit based on meter readings. So I pay for exactly what I’ve used that month, via direct debit.

£107 minus the £66 government voucher.

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 08/03/2023 13:07

£460 jan
£375 Feb

Gas and electric.

4-bed newly renovated semi

neilyoungismyhero · 08/03/2023 13:22

February bill was £68.00 after the Gov. Help amount taken off. Just the two of us in 2 bed semi built in the 70s.
I've use the dryer a couple of times and don't stint on the gas fire when we're cold. We don't put CH on at all but haven't bothered for a few years really.

Arapawa · 08/03/2023 13:27

£178.14 (that includes the government £64 pounds) for a 3 bed house, heating on 5.30 to 9pm at 22degrees (gas). It's the bill for Feb btw.

Galadriel90 · 08/03/2023 13:29

£95 with the govt money taken off. 2 bed house with a a wood burner.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 08/03/2023 13:32

I'd love a bill of £400odd for 5 months! My DD is £348, usage in Dec was £425, Jan £436, Feb £315. Still in credit by about £300 though which I am pretty happy with for this point in the year.

Mine was 400.0 kWh at 34.359p per kWh for electric

1,359.2 kWh at 10.008p per kWh for gas

We only have the heating on twice a day to 18/19 tops for an hour.

I obviously have a massive energy sucker somewhere......

TBF, this was mid Jan-mid Feb where I was home all day every day as was DH working.

For comparison, monthly historic costs for gas

2 February 2023 £151.66
11 January 2023 £59.14
16 December 2022 £163.45
14 November 2022 £43.85
16 October 2022 £57.63
13 September 2022 £61.60
16 August 2022 £24.55

16 March 2022 £52.84

The difference is honestly staggering. We are pretty consistent as a household so some massive gaps I just cant explain. We send our meter readings monthly.

mac1974 · 08/03/2023 13:48

Our dec, Jan was £500 each. Feb a bit lower. It's disgusting. Can't believe they can continue to get away with it.

Have you got a smart meter?

Lovegossip · 08/03/2023 13:57

I only have electric and British Gas Sent us energy vouchers to use so haven't been spending anything. That will end now as the voucher scheme ends this month,

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/03/2023 13:53

Yes, its already at a couple of pounds when we get up in the morning!

LegoLady95 · 08/03/2023 13:59

£335 gas and electricity for the month of Feb.

Thelnebriati · 08/03/2023 14:00

Our actual use is around £120 a month but we haven't had the heating on.

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/03/2023 14:25

Crkey @Seasonofthewitch83 . Switching everything off and looking at how your use changes as you switch it all back on again should help identify whatever is vampiring your electric - i know I'm a low user and on my own but my feb electric usage was a tenth of yours.

Any chance of something being accidentally left on? There was a recent thread where someone couldn't work out where it was all going until they realised a garden room immersion heater and towel rail had been accidentally not switched off for months...

larkstar · 08/03/2023 14:41

Feb
Gas £130
Elec £54

1000yellowdaisies · 08/03/2023 14:43

We switched everything off apart from the boiler when we went away for a few days and tbh there was hardly any difference!

How do you find out if your boiler is using gas or electric to heat? (Sorry for the dense question)

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/03/2023 15:06

Good question - gas boilers often have a pilot light (although mine doesn't).

I know my EPC certificate states my heating is mains gas and hot water, with no secondary heating.

Alternatively I guess googling the make and model of the boiler itself should tell you.
