Just had mine - over £1000 for 3 months. Nearly cried. We've been cold too. Definitely not trivalent with the energy.

Used less energy than this time last year - and the bill was £450 for the same period.

Robbing robbing you know whats.

fizzykoalablanket · 08/03/2023 11:00

Direct debit is £640 per month. That's without the heating on.

Four bed detached. Have asked for smart meter to try and see where it's going but they can't provide one at the moment apparently 🙄

sashh · 08/03/2023 10:02

That's why I don't have a DD.

I'm one of those weird people who don't feel the cold.

But I suffer in the heat, so my bills are higher in the summer.

Why would that mean you can't have a direct debit? It doesn't matter which month you use the energy if you pay 1/12th of the total each month Confused

We are spending £10 a day atm, two adults 1 toddler DC.

It normally drops off a cliff once the heating goes off and we can dry clothes outside so am not too worried about gas, but not much I can do to reduce the electricity further. Working from home is still cheaper with electricity use than commuting costs.

Still disgusting, its fucking snowing outside and am sat layered up several times over as I cant afford to put the heating on during the day. It comes on once int he morning and once in the evening for DD benefit, to an extravagant 18 degrees.

I’m aghast at some people’s bills! Ours for last month was £130 for gas and electric combined after the government payment. We work from home in a not particularly well insulated, large 3 bed house with a fairly old boiler, and pay our bills monthly rather than having a DD which in theory is more expensive.

I cant work out what causes the vast differences! How often do you have the heating on/dry your clothes?

But is £120 enough to cover winter and summer bills? It wouldn't be enough for mine, maybe it is for yours

Yep seems to be, we use basically 0 gas in the summer so all those payments build up, and if we're still in a bit of debit by end of summer we can up it then, i have no issue being in debit to energy companies 😅

Elphame · 08/03/2023 11:32

Far too much

3rd Feb to 28th Feb

£340 for gas
£110 for electricity

I wouldn't mind if the house was warm but it's 13 degrees in my sitting room at the moment

Fundays12 · 08/03/2023 11:32

£102 for electric and £116 for gas so paid £142 ish from 3rd Feb to 7th march. Family of 5 but in a new build with good insulation and are careful with electric and heating

MsJuniper · 08/03/2023 11:35

BG have put up our DD to £410/month for gas and electricity. 3 bed house over 3 storeys. We switch things off and don't have a tumble dryer. It was £125/month a couple of years ago.

I can't believe some people are paying the same for 5 months unless they are still on a fix! What can I do?

Yoyooo · 08/03/2023 11:41

Gas and Electric was £185, 3 adults and child and a baby in a 3 bed terrace (new build)

£640 a month?!

Do you give regular metre readings? What is your monthly usage?

fizzykoalablanket · 08/03/2023 11:57

Yes £640 a month!

I do give regular meter readings, once a month.

However this thread prompted me to get in touch with British Gas and they have just now admitted I am in credit and reduced it to £300!

Result! The beauty of Mumsnet 🙂

Now I might treat my kids to some central heating later 😄

sanityisamyth · 08/03/2023 11:59

£100 went out. Bill was £93. £67 refunded. Credit of £400.

Igenix4 · 08/03/2023 12:04

£100 ish gas, £0 on electric due to the government payment and our provider giving support. We are however only 8 days into March so I'll probably end up spending another £100 or so on gas. Average gas cost at the moment is £200, don't pay for electric at the moment

GenuinelyDone · 08/03/2023 12:04

£127 combined. That's for one month of actual usage. I refuse to pay by direct debit so just give meter readings every month for an accurate bill.

We live in a 3 bed flat and are on a brilliant tariff. I worry about what we'll do when it ends, the current cap is more than double what we pay.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/03/2023 12:06

£140 combined.

You might save a little by going onto a monthly variable direct debit.

Yoyooo · 08/03/2023 12:08

Are people including the £67 in these amounts?

rootsandwings89 · 08/03/2023 12:08

£248 for gas and electric

Oldskoolfackall · 08/03/2023 12:09

I'm also shocked at some of these bills!

The most notable difference for us was stopping baths which sucks as I have arthritis and they help so much. I purchased a 4 min shower timer and we stick to it. Our gas usage plummeted.

For a 2 bed house we only have 6 radiators. And once it's warm it stays nice and toasty.

Once the DC comes home the xbox is on too. So electricity usage could be reduced but I don't want to add more misery into the mix. We've had to cut back on food.

We bought this house for its huge garden and purposely downsized in 2019 from a 4 bed to a 2 bed as we noticed 2 rooms were empty and completely unused! We had friends and family call us idiots for it but we're content with our choice now. X

We usually have the heating on for an hour in the morning and about an hour and a half from 6ish when the sun dips and the temp drops, sometimes a bit more at weekends. We don’t have a tumble dryer so clothes go outside on the line as long as it’s not raining then come in on an airer next to a radiator to finish off if needed.

We never have baths and are both pretty quick in the shower but I don’t think that would make such a huge difference. I love cooking so we don’t scrimp on oven use.

bloodywhitecat · 08/03/2023 12:12

I haven't submitted March yet but Feb's electricity was £128 plus another £50 for oil, old, poorly insulated, single glazed 3 bed semi

TheFlis12345 · 08/03/2023 12:14

To add to mine above, our boiler is old and doesn’t have a thermostat you can turn up and down. It’s just full pelt or off.

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/03/2023 12:16

@Seasonofthewitch83 my heating's at 21 in the day and 18 overnight. Gas heating/oven/hot water used just over 1185kwh, electric was 37kwh for Feb.

Usually use my tumble dryer once a week.
I'm in a 1 bed flat by myself.
