Hi,

As the title says.. Blush
I woke up this morning with a horrible pain down below. Went to the bathroom and I've noticed a large cyst (??) down below. I'm so sorry it's cringey and probably quite graphic to explain..

It's on my inner labia, and is probably the size of a 50p coin. I don't know what to do! It hurts to touch and when I go to the toilet and knock it whilst wiping its like a searing pain. I want to pop it as it feels solid / 'full' but I don't know how, or if it's safe..

Has anybody experienced this before?! Blush

Skin surface cysts or abscesses are completely different to barthloms cyst, and bad advice there sorry.

Aw OK will have a Google now. I didn't give advice though just what I've done

Popwentmybrain · 07/03/2023 23:06

they are so sore. I have had quite a few - zero fun. Usually settle themselves but had one get inflamed and pop recently too. Can only echo hot compress and painkillers. Till you can see a dr, vagisil cream has a lidocaine in it so can numb the area. Had it recommended by a pharmacist when I had a string of horrific utis and it does help for a little while.

Charmatt · 07/03/2023 23:08

I had one - I thought it was a cyst but the GP started to drain it and realised it was an endometrioma. It was filled with blood and took a few days to calm down once it was lanced.

I have no advice, I'm thanking my lucky stars I've not had one having just googled it. Hope it gets better soon OP

Dodgeitornot · 07/03/2023 23:15

I had this twice, once on holiday in Costa Rica with no internet. I thought I caught some parasite and was dying. Thankfully it went away after a day or two in bed. I actually cried as I didn't realise it was there until I wiped. The pain is indescribable. I don't think people who are on here 'popping' them quite understand this isn't the same thing. Hair doesn't grow there, it's not that.

Second one happened about 7 years later and this time I Googled it. Again went away with a hot compress after about 48hrs. I didn't even think to go to the GP tbh but if it had got much bigger I probably would've. Haven't had it again in ages.

whatyoulookingfor · 07/03/2023 23:17

I've had 2. One I was rushed to surgery for under GA within 2 hours of seeing my GP. It was huge and agony. The next one was just a couple of years ago and got to the size of a cherry. Antibiotics didn't clear it and (in the middle of COVID) they booked me in to have it removed under a local anesthetic the next week. They offered a general but I didn't really want that. It was done in literally 5 mins after nearly spurting all over the Dr's face!!

Mine were far too painful to have squeezed and hot baths etc did nothing.

I'd go see the GP or call 111.

LulooLemon · 07/03/2023 23:17

111 OP

Jenpeg · 07/03/2023 23:19

I had this. Agony. I was given antibiotics but after two days I was being violently sick and runs and in extreme pain, I think fever also was really not well, taken to hospital during the night, given pain meds and scheduled for surgery the next afternoon, the anesthetist came in the morning and on seeing me they took me to surgery immediately. I was on 3 antibiotics for 10 days afterwards. I was only 22 and was fairly out of it, I just remember hearing the infection was spreading and then after surgery I just knew it was an infection, I need a lot of antibiotics but it was sorted, looking back now I'm wondering if it could have been sepsis. I had a recurrence about ten years later, initially GP offered antibiotics but when I explained I'd had one before she looked up my notes lifted the phone and sent me straight to hospital again. I had it removed under a local and a small balloon thing placed in it which was left in for a while. That was horrible. Reading other people's experiences I think I've been lucky to only have it twice in 20 years, never had any other lumps or bumps thankfully. I'm sure mine was extreme but it got bad so suddenly, if any of you have this keep an eye out for other symptoms and get checked.

thegreylady · 07/03/2023 23:23

I had a GA and 24 hour stay in hospital . However it popped itself before the operation started(I was already anaesthetised ) so they just cleaned it out and gave me antibiotics.

bridgetreilly · 07/03/2023 23:25

I have had that twice. Both times it has burst before I’ve had a chance to make a GP appointment. It’ll be fine, OP.

GayforMoleman · 07/03/2023 23:32

If it's painful it needs to be seen to properly. I've had a Bartholins cyst for years on one side, when it gets to about the size of a grape I’m able to manipulate it so that it drains (without pain). I consider myself very lucky, always worried it will get infected. Please get it seen to.

Novatherova · 07/03/2023 23:44

Take back what I said earlier about popping it after reading the comments.

It sounds awful. See gp. Hope you're OK.

Mamanyt · 07/03/2023 23:45

Yes, I have, and had to have it lanced by a doctor after staggering into the ER (in USA here), all spraddle-legged. It was HORRIBLE! They tried to deaden it, but it doesn't work very well. I squalled like a banshee. When I apologized to the nice woman doctor, she laughed and said, "That's ok. The last one kicked me in the face. And I didn't blame her." That said, the pain was brief, and the relief was immense. Knowing what I know now, if another one cropped up, I'd do it all over again!

imperialqueen · 07/03/2023 23:49

I had this constantly in my 20's (not sure why that decade of my life). It was ingrown hairs from hair removal. Magnesium sulphate in a compress works great, though did end up getting antibiotics from my gp a few times for them.

Reigateforever · 07/03/2023 23:51

You could sit in a bowl of hot water and refresh it several times instead of a bath.

Rebel2 · 07/03/2023 23:51

@BlueSeaWave but it might not be a bartholins cyst? I get them on my inner labia and it's not one

Unless the OP has seen a doctor then nobody can say if it is or isn't one. I'm just commenting because I've had 26 years of dealing with a condition that causes multiple abscesses/cysts/boils

If it does burst then it can be sore to wee so use a jug of water to pour over

Lavender14 · 07/03/2023 23:54

Hot compresses, loose cotton clothing and hot sitz baths are the best approach here. Apply heat/ hot compresses as often as you can throughout the day. If it doesn't go down/ drain naturally and you've been doing that for a few days I'd contact gp.

Moveoverdarlin · 07/03/2023 23:58

I had this just the other week. It was very large and I didn’t go to a GP. I had hot baths twice a day (just shallow ones). One day I think I had three, but it really worked. I also left off knickers as much as possible and wore loose fitting clothes. It took a couple of days to shrink in size, a week to be noticeably better but now it’s completely gone after two or three weeks.

alanabennett · 08/03/2023 00:01

TobeLeRone · 07/03/2023 21:09

Could be a Bartholin’s cyst?
You could hot cloth it which may help to bring it to a head?

I agree. I had one and sat in a hot bath with epsom salts. I hope it come a to a head quickly for you!

hampsteadmum · 08/03/2023 00:05

Could be Bartholin Cyst, epidermoid cyst, ingrown hair that has created a lump or something else. Get it seen by a gynaecologist. They should be able to pop it -but don't do it yourself.

blueshoes · 08/03/2023 00:10

Go commando. No knickers. Loose clothing. Avoid as much chafing as you can. It should go down after a few days.

Strawberrydelight78 · 08/03/2023 00:30

I've had one on my pubis you'll need antibiotics. Once it bursts though the pain goes wear a pad Putting some salt in bath helps.

nunsflipflop · 08/03/2023 00:49

Rebel2 · 07/03/2023 23:03

I get them monthly if not more anywhere from ears to groin to armpit. FUN Confused
Hot baths, compresses, painkillers
I go to the GP if they're bigger than golf ball size, the redness is spreading or I feel unwell
They don't tend to like doing incision and drainage as usually needs to be done under GA (you can't numb infection)

That sounds like a condition called Hidradenitis Supprativa. All the areas you mention are typical areas. If you can get to see your GP ask for a referral to a dermatologist, they have access to treatments that your GP doesn’t.

I have suffered for more than 30 years
