Just being nosy, really!

How long is the shortest marriage you’ve seen and why did it end so quickly?

6 weeks. Bride & Groom emigrated to Australia 2 weeks after the wedding (pre-planned) but after a month the groom decided he hated it there and came back to the UK.

The bride’s parents (very wealthy) had spent an absolute fortune on the wedding eg £10k on fireworks alone 😱

Boxe · 07/03/2023 21:39

I had a friend go from engaged to
married to separated to engaged within 8 months.

I should add the B&G had been together about 10 years - met at Uni and together ever since, so it wasn’t a case of them not realising they weren’t compatible!

were there any inklings prior to this huge betrayal being uncovered that he was a cheating scumbag? or did you genuinely think he was a great guy.

Nothing till honeymoon where he seemed to change and become possessive over me and what I was doing. Until there for all the years we were together I never dreamed this would happen.

zorgoid · 07/03/2023 21:41

4 months
They just realised it was a mistake

Remaker · 07/03/2023 21:42

I know of one couple who were married 6 weeks, turned out the bride was cheating.

Another couple the groom found out on the honeymoon that his wife was cheating. They split up as soon as they returned from the holiday.

The biggest shock was a couple who’d been together 10 years and were living together. They were only married for 9 months. There was no cheating or anything like that, apparently he just had an epiphany that this wasn’t the life he wanted. She wanted to spend all their free time with her family, it all became dull very quickly and she wasn’t willing to compromise. He eventually married someone else but she never has. They’re in their 50s now.

exLtEveDallas · 07/03/2023 21:47

An ex, 6 weeks - he never should have gone through with it, a few of us had told him before the wedding that she was shagging around, but he wouldn’t listen.

A work colleague, less than 2 weeks - she’d been sleeping with her boss for months beforehand and they split on honeymoon. I was pretty disgusted with her tbh.

Conversely, a good friend of mine met and married his wife within 3 months - they are still going strong almost 20 years now.

Cakecakecheese · 07/03/2023 21:49

3 weeks. He attacked her. She's happily married to someone else now.

HaggisFace · 07/03/2023 21:50

Mine was 4 months. I knew I was making a mistake the day we got married but I was young and felt trapped.

He was an awful human tbh and I'm so glad I left as soon as I felt strong enough to walk.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/03/2023 21:50

About 2 years. They were both in their 30s. Very lavish wedding in Westminster (he was extremely wealthy) but she wanted to go out and do things at the weekend and he just wanted to sit in their big expensive house in Hampstead because he worked so hard all week. She's been with her new man for 22 years now and is very happy.

tillytoodles1 · 07/03/2023 21:52

My brother's GF got married so her dad could see the wedding. He had terminal cancer and died a few days later. They never slept together and both went back to their own homes the day after the wedding and had it annulled.

Fantina · 07/03/2023 21:55

@tillytoodles1 Had your brother and her agreed that in advance? How old were they?

elizzza · 07/03/2023 21:58

6 weeks. He’d been having an affair for years with the maid of honour, who was also married. I didn’t believe these things actually happened outside of soaps until it happened to someone I know! The groom and the maid of honour are now married with kids (only know this through other people, I’m not in touch with them) and I’m dying to know what they say when people ask how they met.

Ladydinosaur · 07/03/2023 21:58

My brother and my sis-in-law
theyd been together 7 years-she wanted the big white wedding-he didn’t want to marry at all
finally set the date, got married, had a shitty wet honeymoon and broke up 3 months later
(she dropped me like a hot brick as soon as they where married as I was ‘lesser’ than her for not being married-I would have classed her as my best mate at the time)
they divorced, got back together, had a kid and have been together ever since!
Bloody odd

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 07/03/2023 22:01

Not as short as everyone else’s, but under a year. The couple were together at least 10 years together. Their first venue burnt down, so had to rearrange it all elsewhere. Maybe it was a sign.

mistermagpie · 07/03/2023 22:04

This is making me feel better about my
1 year marriage! We had been together for nearly a decade and loved together, so can't claim to have rushed in, but we just weren't right for each other.

RightOnTheEdge · 07/03/2023 22:04

A lad I worked with told his bride at the reception that he thought he'd made a mistake! Shock
It ended up with the families rowing and the brides father punched him!
That was it. They got an annulment and never spoke to each other again!

PrancerandDancer · 07/03/2023 22:05

9 months, and he spent 6 months of that overseas for work. They were so unmatched, most people were surprised he turned up on the day. Bride and her family had been difficult in the run up. Constant arguments. My DH said on the way home, he gave it a year. Didn't even hit that.

determinedtomakethiswork · 07/03/2023 22:05

Ihatethenewlook · 07/03/2023 21:24

About 6 months. They’d been together for over a decade. The groom had been married before, and never wanted to again after being stung by his ex who took him to the cleaners. It took ten years for the bride to convince him to marry her as she ‘wanted the security’. She left him for another man within a few months, also left with half of his assets (she didn’t have any).

I wouldn't have thought that she would be entitled to that.

1stTimeMama · 07/03/2023 22:07

My first marriage was 8 months, he was a vile man, slept with any and everyone, bankrupted me and then emailed me at work to ask for a divorce. I was young, we hadn't been together long, and my confidence was rock bottom.

Conversely, my parents met and were married within 6 weeks and celebrate their 45th anniversary this year.

FrenchFancie · 07/03/2023 22:08

About 5 months, happened to a friend of mine - she felt hugely pressured by her family into choosing a husband and settling down, so she did but she didn’t love the guy. He turned out to be a class A shit and knocked her down the stairs, we helped get her away from him. They divorced and she married again, she’s been happily married for years. No idea what happened to him and couldn’t care less!!

justgettingthroughtheday · 07/03/2023 22:09

About 18hrs.
He died the following morning. He had terminal cancer and the wedding was arranged within two days.
They were both 25.

Undermyumberellaellaella · 07/03/2023 22:11

About 10 days. He caught her shagging his brother.

SuperGinger · 07/03/2023 22:15

Friend met a waiter on honeymoon and dumped her brand new husband

Mischance · 07/03/2023 22:18

I asked my brother when he knew his marriage was a mistake and he said it was at the wedding reception. I asked my sister the same and she said the same.

I was the only one who stayed married till death did us part.
