Continuation of previous threads (thread 5).

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

I now have a theory (this is my theory, and it is mine!) that those of us not in the health services may have got it from mothers who lusted after Richard Chamberlain and watched Dr. Kildare in the 60s. It's certainly shorter, and easier to say. But it's one of those words nobody uses - we say "have your appendix out". A young friend of ours was struggling recently to explain to a non-medical person that he needed a cholecystectomy (a word he was having problems with). He could have saved himself no end of time by just saying he needed his gall bladder out.

Britinme · 11/03/2023 20:33

Do you have any interesting theories about dinosaurs, @Gonners , or is that just me old enough to remember Mrs Ann Elk's theory on Monty Python?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 11/03/2023 20:39

I always knew it as appendectomy (and MaBint was certainly a Dr Kildarre fan) so was surprised by the word appendicectomy when I had one in 1991 (specifically, the day the land war broke out in Gulf War I).

"MISS" Ann Elk, please.

Britinme · 11/03/2023 20:43

Apologies! MISS Ann Elk.

How do junior doctors fare when presented with one of the rarer locations, @MavisMcMinty? Whoever did mine certainly struggled, but the quality of the stitching suggested non-junior hands.

angelico53 · 11/03/2023 21:01

I can't match your long service - but I never heard it in my years. That's dashed convincing, @MavisMcMinty ! I had suspected the hidden hand of The Cousins too. Those same cousins who (this is incidental) charged us over ten grand for Angelica's op in the 90s. I mean, they were jolly nice, and some of them very handsome, she says, this was in the days of "ER", but still. $10.25 for disposable slippers, two pieces, officers for the use of.

Winterborne74 · 11/03/2023 22:18

Appendicectomy is a new one for me.

In the absence of a Guardian good bad and ugly thread, this is something of a classic of the genre:

MavisMcMinty · 12/03/2023 00:36

This is so weird to me - I have honestly never heard a British person - healthcare professional or not - say “appendectomy”. And you’re all thinking “appendicectomy” is alien? Maybe you’ve just watched too much ER and St Elsewhere and Scrubs? Or maybe unless it actually happens to you/someone you know, there is never a need to say the word at all?

Kucinghitam · 12/03/2023 06:53

I always thought it was 'appendectomy' but I've had a weird hybrid English language background.

I often think I'm speaking standard British English, then someone will look puzzled at me and ask whether I'm American.

I'm another one who only knew appendectomy, and I'm relieved to see that it's the main usage on out Health Service website.

The operation to remove a Yorkshire accent is a byecktomy.

Britinme · 12/03/2023 08:25

That puts me in mind of the well-known Yorkshire dentist E. Bygum.

MavisMcMinty · 12/03/2023 14:40

In the 1950s my Mum’s London dentist was called Mr Screech. Apparently his son also became a dentist, but I don’t know know about any grandchildren.

Britinme · 13/03/2023 09:21

I rarely watch BBC breakfast time tv, because it's usually on in the middle of the night EST and because I'm usually doing something other than being in front of the tv at that time anyway. However today was that rare exception and I felt really chuffed to see a report about a young swimmer called Adam Loubani who is autistic and also has some learning and minor physical difficulties. He's been chosen for the British swimming team for the Special Olympics next year after training for several years with the Special Olympic swimming club in my home town of Hull. He didn't tell his mum he'd put his name forward until he was chosen. Very heart-warming!

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 13/03/2023 13:40

That is lovely.

I saw Sara Pascoe on Saturday night and was impressed. I've seen her live before and she was okay. That was a few years ago and she's really honed her talent since then because she's now really good and absolutely hilarious.

I spent the afternoon with my friend B and introduced her to my "fun" game, "Mental or on the phone?" It's much more fun when you're playing it with another person.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/03/2023 13:43

I live in Sourh London. The answer is often mental AND on the phone.

Dotellhimpike · 13/03/2023 16:27

Irish film
"An irish Goodbye"
won an Oscar for best short film last night. And I am very proud to say the third AD on the movie is the son of two of my longest and best friends, and I played my own small part in immersing him in pop culture from infancy, so much so he chose film as his career.

This is my (not very humble) brag for today.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/03/2023 16:30

I've been thinking about buying a luxury compost bin (insulated, dual compartment and rotating - you don't get much fancier than that!). But it's a silly amount of money to spend on compost.

Only, it's currently on offer and I've just had a premium bond come up for almost exactly the offer price (first time I've ever won more than the minimum prize). That's a sign, right?

An excellent subject for a not-humble brag, pike, relish it!

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/03/2023 16:38

Binturong, do you really need a luxury compost bin? 😅

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/03/2023 16:38

Of course she does! Bint loves gardening. Making compost is fun. Making compost is even more fun if you can bugger about with it aerating and turning it effortlessly!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/03/2023 16:54

Excellent Oscar connection, Pike.

Weeell ... ... define 'need'. I don't have a proper one - only a basic Dalek with the front panel missing. It's impossible to turn compost in there, and the gap means bumble bees keep nesting in it. And we do have a lot of garden waste.
