Keeping chip-shop chips?

Stillcountingbeans · 06/03/2023 18:39

We just got some chips from a chip shop for dinner. The portions were enormous - about twice as much as we needed.
Can they be kept in the fridge or freezer? Can they be microwaved, re-fried or baked in the oven?
Or shall I just bin them?

They are traditional big fat chips, not thin ones.

Oven. Be careful, not too long. I’ve found that microwaving doesn’t work, they go all hard.

Left over chips are quite nice in the stew next day. Or simply fried with onions.

TheFormidableMrsC · 06/03/2023 19:19

I rarely buy fish and chips because portions are so enormous for just me. I did once reheat in air fryer the next day and they were absolutely amazing. I'm sure you can recreate in an oven but I think it's the air circulation in the air fryer that gives it the edge.

We put them in the fridge and microwave, they taste nice

ToootToot · 06/03/2023 19:36

I think they’re

Oven. Won’t be as good though. You could try a chip omelette…

That reminds me of a holiday in Tenerife many years ago.

So many ‘enormous’ portions. Maybe you’re all just teeny tinies.

ToootToot · 06/03/2023 19:39

I think they’re even better frozen and reheated in the oven/air fryer! In fact we order a double portion of chips just for that very reason 😬

freeze them in a single layer on eg a tray so they don’t all stick together, then once they’re solid put them in a freezer bag.

Groutyonehereagain · 06/03/2023 19:39

I fried an onion, a red pepper and some chorizo then added the chips chopped in half and added seasoning and chilli sauce. It was really good.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 06/03/2023 19:40

I've reheated them in a frying pan and they came out fine.

dun1urkin · 06/03/2023 19:42

Chip omlette aka tortilla is my preferred use for left over chip shop chips

Octopusmittens · 06/03/2023 19:42

I’ve warmed them in the oven before and they weren’t good.
Try frying in a little bit of oil in a pan, delicious 😋

You've clearly never been to a fish and chip shop in Yorkshire.

The fish hangs over both sides of our large dinner plates and its a feat of engineering to fit the great pile of the chips on the plate as well.

My chippy has really cut down on the portion sizes. Fuckers.

Mum2jenny · 06/03/2023 20:16

Have reheated in an oven (both from fridge and freezer) and all have been acceptable as chips

I've microwaved the next day, but they can be rubbery if over done, but generally decent and better than throwing them out.

liveforsummer · 06/03/2023 20:50

Yes freeze then reheat from frozen. Air fryer would be best but oven ok too. Won't be as good but still edible

And? Am I missing something?

Rebel2 · 06/03/2023 20:53

Just saying I'm not teeny tiny and it genuinely is a large portion! I get why people have left overs

I don’t think it’s ‘large’ but ok. 👍

Have you tried celeriac, @WinterMusings ?

@Wisheverydaywasfriday

hey, thanks for thinking of me 🤗

I have & they didn't turn out well, too much moisture in it I think. I should try again.

have you? If you have/do, do you do anything different to hiw you'd do them with potato?

my friend has just got an air fryer, so I might take a celeriac over & try that. If they make celeriac chips edible I'll definitely get one!!

I don't mind celeriac as 'mash'

Wisheverydaywasfriday · 10/03/2023 20:12

Sorry, just saw your post, @WinterMusings I chop the celeriac into chips, then par boil for 5-10 minutes. Then I drain well, add to airfryer and give a few sprays of oil, then season with paprika and chilli salt. Don’t go super crispy, but definitely a reasonable substitute when low carbing.

I agree, the paprika is an absolute game changer for celeriac chips. If you're not doing clean keto then try sprinkling a teaspoon of cornflour on as well, it seems to help dry them out when they're cooking. Final tip, if you microwave a whole celeriac on high for around 7-10 mins it makes it way easier to cut into chips.
