Keeping chip-shop chips?

Stillcountingbeans · 06/03/2023 18:39

We just got some chips from a chip shop for dinner. The portions were enormous - about twice as much as we needed.
Can they be kept in the fridge or freezer? Can they be microwaved, re-fried or baked in the oven?
Or shall I just bin them?

They are traditional big fat chips, not thin ones.

Oven. Won’t be as good though. You could try a chip omelette…

Chasingsquirrels · 06/03/2023 18:41

I've read, but not tried, about reheating in an airfryer working well.

SuchAFunAge · 06/03/2023 18:41

Have had decent results using air fryer, if you have one!

Sadly we don't have an air frier, but I think they work like a mini-oven.

Has anyone tried freezing them? or would they have to go in the fridge and be eaten tomorrow?

I've frozen them and reheated in oven. They're not as good but ok.

Badbudgeter · 06/03/2023 18:44

I can confirm reheating in an airfryer works brilliantly. Normally chip shop chips are too sad to contemplate the next day but a few minutes in the air fryer and they tasted like fresh, crispy and not at all soggy like microwaving.

YorkieTheRabbit · 06/03/2023 18:44

I’ve a friend that freezes them and reheats them in the oven just like oven chips, she says they’re pretty good.

RicherThanYews · 06/03/2023 18:44

Cook them up with salt, chilli, onion and bell peppers in a wok. Yum.

WinterMusings · 06/03/2023 18:46

I wrapped them up in original paper, put them in the fridge (if sober enough to remember)then heated them
up (to piping hot) in a (dry) fry pan the next day! Just as good as the first day.

God I miss chips!!

Omelette or stir frying sounds good.

I’ve frozen them and then reheated them in the oven directly from the freezer. Absolutely fine! If anything, I prefer them to the fresh ones as they are a bit crispier.

Monkeybutt1 · 06/03/2023 18:50

We freeze them all the time then cook them from frozen in the oven, they are lovely

Impatientwino · 06/03/2023 18:50

I have frozen them before, worked perfectly well. I heated them fairly slowly in the oven.

Stillcountingbeans · 06/03/2023 18:53

Thanks all - I will put them in the freezer😁

We don’t buy from the chippy that often so I always forget how big the portions are, I’ve never frozen them but as long as you give them a little spritz of oil before you recook them, either in a frying pan or in the oven they’re fine and not at all soggy. Personally, the frying pan is better.

TwitTwoodiniEscapeOwlogist · 06/03/2023 19:01

If they are refrigerated then refrying them in a frying pan and a small amount of oil the next day is brilliant. They come out crispy and actually even a bit nicer than the day you bought them.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/03/2023 19:02

Fridge. Heat in microwave up to three days later.

This!

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 06/03/2023 19:03

I never even considered freezing them - I might try now that people have recommended it!

FindingMeno · 06/03/2023 19:05

I eat them cold for breakfast.

Wisheverydaywasfriday · 06/03/2023 19:05

Have you tried celeriac, @WinterMusings ?

TroysMammy · 06/03/2023 19:05

I've frozen and not and reheated in an oven and airfryer and they are fine. I do find that the best chips are eaten first and the smaller crisper ones left for another meal.

LividNC · 06/03/2023 19:09

Microwave them first and THEN quick blast round a wok with oil in.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/03/2023 19:10

I came on the thread to suggest the chip omelette. It's like a shortcut to a Spanish tortilla.

TheChosenTwo · 06/03/2023 19:12

Blimey we give our chickens leftover chips, they’re cheap as, well, chips! I didn’t realise people got 2 sittings out of chip shop chips, not that we have lots leftover or eat fish and chips very often to be honest. There’s one at the end of my road and I sometimes smell it if I’m going out and it puts me off, we maybe have it once a year (unless by the seaside of course!).
