My son loves school dinner curry- it's his favourite meal but any curry that I have bought/ made he doesn't like! Has any one got any suggestions that I could either buy or make?

We often make "Jools' favourite chicken curry" from Jamie Oliver's website. Really tasty and the kids love it. Flavourful but without heat.

TheBirdintheCave · 06/03/2023 16:05

Could you ask the school what kind of curry sauce they make/use?

sandwhichandsoup · 06/03/2023 16:05

That's brilliant I'll give that a try. I don't know whether my child is just being contrary but I'll absolutely check that out!

Bhuna curries are technically medium hot, but taste quite mild (to me anyway). If you are cooking it yourself, you can omit the chilli powder entirely.

Galadriel90 · 06/03/2023 16:12

Butter chicken, chicken tikka masala or a korma.

Lolloped · 06/03/2023 16:16

My kids are very fussy but will eat the Tesco Hearty food co cheapest jar of curry sauce with chicken. It’s 45p. I find it inoffensive although it’s not the most exciting curry.

sandwhichandsoup · 06/03/2023 16:19

@Lolloped that's another one I'll
Add to my list for a quick and easy dinner some night. Thank you 🙏

Korma or butter chicken would be the mildest but if it's the heat he doesn't like, you can stir natural yogurt into his portion

AlphaAlpha · 06/03/2023 16:34

Butter chicken, I buy the maggi bag ones for an easy life.

DinosApple · 06/03/2023 17:17

If it's heat that he's not keen on you can add butter to the rice and just give him a little of the gravy.
Butter takes the edge off and is what my Indian grandparents used to do when I was little.

Goingoutdancing · 06/03/2023 17:24

Mayflower is nice. My DD likes that

Dredel · 06/03/2023 17:26

Nigel Slater chicken with spices and cream. Uses mild curry powder. It's delicious. Mine have eaten it from tiny. We can put spinach and chili in it nowadays!

florenceandthemac · 06/03/2023 17:26

Even though my DS doesn't mind spicy food, sometimes I just add double cream to a portion of whatever curry we are having and he seems to love it

Dredel · 06/03/2023 17:27

Nigel Slater curry

My DC's scout group make this school curry which usually goes down well.

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 06/03/2023 17:32

Katsu curry isn't really spicy. It's quite sweet so may go down well?

Sandsnake · 06/03/2023 17:32

My child friendly recipe is:

  • sweetish veg - usually carrots, peppers and corn and some green like broccoli cooked and then blended to make a purée
  • cook some chicken thigh in chunks. Add a curry paste, usually korma or tikka masala.
  • add a tin of coconut milk and the veg puree
  • simmer for a bit

Always goes down well and pretty easy. The veg purée means a) they eat veg and b) naturally thickens the consistency of the coconut milk.

Its v easy, with the exception of the veg purée which is a bit of a faff but I tend to do in bulk and then freeze. For added ease I tend to serve with microwave bag rice 👌

CollieFIower · 06/03/2023 17:34

Tarka dhal, with a bit of coconut cream in.

Minty yoghurt and naan bread on the side.

ISpyCobraKai · 06/03/2023 17:36

Korma, or a Chinese curry, you can also make a lovely mild dahl which Dd loved when she was a baby.

gogohmm · 06/03/2023 17:36

Try a finely chopped onion sautéed, add 2 tbsp curry powder, 1 veggie stock cube, 1 can coconut milk, splash of soy sauce and 1-2 tbsp cheap honey. For the adults add a chopped chilli and some curry leaves at the end. I use Lidl's medium curry powder. Serve over chicken pieces eg breaded chicken for a cheap tasty meal

gogohmm · 06/03/2023 17:37

Mine have always eaten hot curries though, so just persevere

cillygelly · 06/03/2023 17:37

Thats funny because my DC's favourite school dinner is also chicken curry!

Patientlywaitingx2 · 06/03/2023 17:38

M & s fruity curry my 2 year old loves

cillygelly · 06/03/2023 17:39

Katsu curry with sticky rice. Wagamama recipe.

Rayna37 · 06/03/2023 17:39

We just had the same scenario: DS is in reception and said the curry at school was great: he had insisted he hated curry previously. I made a korma this weekend and it was "amazing" apparently! Any decent korma recipe should work.
