Between the hours of 6-8 and 4-8 my house sounds like a roller disco in about 1982. I can practically smell the Brut and Babycham.

He's mercifully keeping the interest to his own room, so it's only a faint sound (so more like the sound of nipping round the back for a snog and a ciggie than hurtling round the floor in a rara skirt). But I'm a light sleeper and was this morning awoken at 6.02 by Ra Ra Rasputin.

Oh, how I yearn for the silent days when he was busy creating a complex taxonomy of Daleks.

Please send support, sympathy and ear plugs!

Some of my favourite 1970's disco tracks:

Donna Summer - extended version, Georgio Moroder.

Patrick Juvet - anyone remember this?

Change - "....there was fog on the road, so I guess no one saw me arriving..."

Earth, Wind & Fire

Mine (DS 14) is currently into musical theatre - mainly Jesus Christ Superstar but only the o2 version from about 10 years ago with Tim Minchin as Judas and just the 2 songs.
Les Mis and Phantom also on repeat, again one wobbly recorded version on YouTube.
And one song from Waitress.
Oh and a bit of Wicked Grin

We are a very neurodivergent household with no interesting special interests currently! We have done the periodic table, pangolins, Pokémon, musical theatre, Rick Riordan, but all these things shall pass.

I made a career out of my special interest so that gets to stay. I even get a special room, just for the books!

johnworf · 03/03/2023 19:38

I would love mine to have disco as his current obsession. We are going through the physcis phase and I am quizzed daily on muons, quarks, all about atoms and lots of things said by Carl Sagan. I haven't got a clue about any of it but I know all the words to Rasputin 😂

Senior school starts next year. Thank all of the gods that world book day ceases to exist there.

Not in my eldest’s London school. Years 7 and 8 still get to dress up. Joy.

Am loving this thread btw. I have never joined in a conversation about my autistic son's obsessions. Thank you.

When we recruit and it becomes clear a candidate is on the spectrum, we silently whoop. The results can be phenomenal for all people.

I was complaining to my mum about the New York State rap music obsession of ds and she reminded me that the uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars had been one of mine as a teenager so she felt I had nothing to complain about.

I have a massive Spotify playlist of disco music and also five American DCs who did a lot of sports and extra curricular and had part time jobs.

During my mom taxi years I played Abba cds in the car non stop. The DCs' friends and teammates look back on all of that fondly when they get together, I hear. My DCs are very patient with me and my musical taste.

I also have an 80s list Smile

You could maybe get your DS some headphones for the early morning music?

mathanxiety · 03/03/2023 20:14

At 6 am, there's nothing like The Nolan Sisters "I'm in the Mood for Dancing" to get you up and tripping the light fantastic.

VoluptuaSneezelips · 04/03/2023 02:49

My old boss came into work one morning looked stressed and shattered. Apparently he had spent the majority of the night listening to ParK Life by Blur on repeat.

Deathraystare · 04/03/2023 07:35

That is brilliant Grin Ra Ra Rasputin lived rent free in my head for about 3 months when the Ukraine war started and they would play it on telly when Putin was on.

Thanks everyone! Life in a neurodiverse family is never boring is it?!

I have loved hearing about posters' and their loves ones' special interests and am now wondering what will come next.

Over half term DS expressed an interest in building a model railway. Grandpa, a huge model rail enthusiast was thrilled and they visited several specialist shops and a museum. At the end of half term DS confided, 'Mum, can you please tell Grandpa I'm not as into model railways as he is. I don't think I really want one any more. It's just too.....geeky' Oh, how we laughed (to the dulcet melody of Heart of Glass)

You've summoned me with Heart of Glass. You can tell him that a random 51yo Blondie fan thinks his music taste is fab! 😀

BluesandClues · 04/03/2023 20:51

My oldest with ASD interests has evolved through dinosaurs, then evolution, to the process of evolution to where we are now, which is bugs.

I went to an insect convention today, an actual insect convention. I attended a lecture about Weevils. Thanks to my research based modules, I actually understood what Professor of Weevils was actually going on about.

I’ve also joined a bug society on behalf of the family. I HATE insects, hate them!! But yet here I am with my fecking bug club membership card.

BTW did you know that scorpions are part of the arachnid family? Because I didn’t! I feel weirdly betrayed by this information, and I don’t know why.

He has excellent taste!

ReformedWaywardTeen · 05/03/2023 13:01

In our house it's flags and national anthems.

I'd much rather Disco!

DS is obsessed with maps and countries and national anthems old and new. He knows all of them and sings along.

Waiting patiently for the next hyper fixation

BreakingPointAgain · 05/03/2023 13:15

'My Sharona' by The Knack takes me right back to the annual fair when it would be played while you were on the waltzers!

LlynTegid · 05/03/2023 13:31

There's a lot worse he could be listening to- let's hope he does not move onto Jive Bunny for example.
