Aahhhh! My autistic son's new special interest is late seventies disco music.....

Between the hours of 6-8 and 4-8 my house sounds like a roller disco in about 1982. I can practically smell the Brut and Babycham.

He's mercifully keeping the interest to his own room, so it's only a faint sound (so more like the sound of nipping round the back for a snog and a ciggie than hurtling round the floor in a rara skirt). But I'm a light sleeper and was this morning awoken at 6.02 by Ra Ra Rasputin.

Oh, how I yearn for the silent days when he was busy creating a complex taxonomy of Daleks.

Please send support, sympathy and ear plugs!

My 15 year old (ASD) has an obsession with serial killers currently. Apparently eyebrows were raised when she took a Ted Bundy book into school for world book day yesterday. At least she listens to music with her headphones though I suppose.

I'm obsessed with serial killers too and have been for far too long

AllTangledUpInThisTango · 03/03/2023 13:24

Oh @MaggieMagpie357 Dh and I have a soft spot for K drama series. Spent about a year working through some pretty good shows.

whynotwhatknot · 03/03/2023 13:31

hes got great taste

MaidOfSteel · 03/03/2023 13:32

"You're highly likely to get lucky on two of the three. Donna summer I'm not so sure about..."

This university tutor LOVES Donna Summer, so never fear!

NorthernSoul55 · 03/03/2023 13:40

If he could manage it, take him to see Chic live! Playing all over this summer. I've seen them several times and it's a great live gig.

VoluptuaSneezelips · 03/03/2023 13:43

As frustrating as it can be this is such a lovely light hearted thread.

My son no longer lives at home and I miss hearing the latest music he is obsessed with. He does update me on how many cd's he has bought though, at over 1000 and counting I think he is deffo helping keep the CD industry afloat. 😂

Didiplanthis · 03/03/2023 13:44

I'm quite envious... I was woken at 5 am with a sudoko book stuffed in my face which is my ASD DS new special interest...

WaggyTailsWetNoses · 03/03/2023 10:38

Oddly enough, I've not heard a single Abba song being played.
But Sister Sledge is taking a real hammering (if you'll excuse the brilliant pun)

I feel that we are inhabiting a parallel universe to those on the 'tiger parent'/ 'american middle class children' thread extolling the virtues of organised fun, competitive team sports and a hectic extracurricular schedule to impress universities. I'm just hoping the admissions tutors at whatever university DS aspires to attend are also massively into Warhammer, Daleks, and Donna Summer.

Bwahahaha love this! The admissions tutors at Uni might not be into those things but rest assured his professors probably will! The hubby's a professor. Even he says nearly most of his colleagues are on the spectrum but ALL of them are very focussed on eccentric things! 😅

MaggieMagpie357 · 03/03/2023 13:45

Yes @AllTangledUpInThisTango she's very partial to a K drama series as well! At least they're free to watch 😆

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/03/2023 13:46

I'm so jealous. My autistic DS is currently fixated on garage and some really dodgy gangsta rap although the lyrics seem to go over his head. He accepts it when I say "no not that one". It's a bloody minefield. I'm going to try and persuade him in your direction OP 😆

HoppingPavlova · 03/03/2023 13:50

I’d think that was absolutely brilliant. Problem is I’d get my boogie on and poor kid would be instantaneously turned off it all🤣.

zen1 · 03/03/2023 13:51

My autistic teen son is obsessed with the institution of Monarchy (we are certainly not royalists!) and it’s downfall. Every day he watches the queens funeral on YouTube, so I know the funeral march off by heart. He is also obsessed with the French and Russian revolutions, so Rasputin is one of his favourite songs!

My ASD ds 14 has started collecting fake gold jewelry..
Dh wants to start calling him Mr T.
This is his latest request..
Least we hear him coming in now...

OMG, this is priceless. Mr T!!! Thank you for the good chuckle. The visual was the icing on the cake!

Picklypickles · 03/03/2023 13:56

That's brilliant! My autistic son's special interests are Pokemon and Minecraft and he babbles on at me about them from the moment he opens his eyes in the morning until he goes to sleep at night! He hates music sadly! My NT daughter loves music but hasn't got the disco fever yet! I am alone in my love of 70's disco in this house.

Schoolprotest · 03/03/2023 13:59

😍 I met Tom baker once. Very nice man.

penelopepea · 03/03/2023 13:59

Loving all of these! My 22 year old daughter's current obsession is K-Pop; I know more about Yunho than I really should...Grin

WaggyTailsWetNoses · 03/03/2023 14:00

Thanks everyone! Life in a neurodiverse family is never boring is it?!

I have loved hearing about posters' and their loves ones' special interests and am now wondering what will come next.

Over half term DS expressed an interest in building a model railway. Grandpa, a huge model rail enthusiast was thrilled and they visited several specialist shops and a museum. At the end of half term DS confided, 'Mum, can you please tell Grandpa I'm not as into model railways as he is. I don't think I really want one any more. It's just too.....geeky' Oh, how we laughed (to the dulcet melody of Heart of Glass)

I sympathise. My NT Dd was singing Xanadu at 10pm last night.

Shes inherited my questionable music tastes GrinBlush

Nothing questionable at all about ELO and Olivia! It's about as close to music perfection as you can get!

Carlycat · 03/03/2023 14:03

What a heart warming post! Your lovely son has great taste!

mastertomsmum · 03/03/2023 14:04

Lol we are all addicted to That’s TV 70s/80s pop clips here. My son has never liked contemporary stuff, likes even older stuff than us like The Who, early Bowie, Hendrix.

Deathraystare · 03/03/2023 14:04
  1. Your son has very good taste.
  2. Babycham is back, Baby! Get with the programme, Mum!!!
RancidOldHag · 03/03/2023 14:06

@Picklypickles

Try looking on YouTube for the Minecraft parody songs if you want to nudge him towards listening to music, I think my favourite is TNT (was Dynamite by Taio Cruz)

Deathraystare · 03/03/2023 14:07

I'm a light sleeper and was this morning awoken at 6.02 by Ra Ra Rasputin.

There are worse things to be woken up to, you know!!!
