I'm crying at 9:45 AM because someone found my keys

Just that really. On Monday I lost my keys which consisted of three keys to the house, my car and my garage. A work fob-key and my keychain with my name and address on them. Someone's stuck them in an envelope, posted them through my door with a note that explained they found them but before they could get to me I was gone, in the note they said they were sorry they couldn't have gotten them to me sooner and that they didn't want anything for returning them, just the satisfaction of knowing they did a good deed.

I've never been more grateful for a kind stranger before.

I think I need to go lay down now, maybe cry a bit.

I'm emotional, doesn't help being 36 weeks pregnant 🤣🤣

Hey guys, how ya'll doing?

It’s really nice of them to return them OP but have you considered having the locks changed?

Prettypaisleyslippers · 02/03/2023 09:48

That’s great news! Eat some chocolate cake now x

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 02/03/2023 09:49

I really am delighted you have your keys back and that there are lovely people in this world...but remove the details with your name and address on! That really is a gift to burglars. Some banks/rac etc do keyrings where you can put them in a postbox and they will contact you.

That was kind of them.

It is amazing how often keys get lost (I am guilty of that too!).

Where I work in reception I am often handed bunches of keys that the patients found on the ground or on the top of cars!

Amazingly, even though the person must have come onto the hospital grounds, we do not often have enquiries about keys! Or bank cards!

idonthaveyourwellies · 02/03/2023 09:51

Already ten steps ahead of you. We already did change the locks, my Dad used to be a locksmith and he changed it but that was because my younger brother threw something at the door handle in a tantrum

I just wanted to share something decent to show that humanity isnt all doom and gloom

What a great start to the day!

I lost 1 key, retraced steps twice without finding them. About 2 weeks later they turned up on a neighbour's wall!

PuttingDownRoots · 02/03/2023 09:57

DH once left the keys to our reasonably new car in the roof box lock in a tourist attraction car park.

They were taken into the gift shop and kept safely for us. (DH realised half an hour later, rang the ticket office (we were the other side of the attraction by then), and they told him they had him and to enjoy the day)

There are many good people out there.

ScottishLavender · 02/03/2023 09:58

Keeping your address on your keys? What could possibly go wrong there? 😱

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 02/03/2023 10:05

I think people taking the time out of their day to check you have thought through the implications is also a sign that people are good.

Glad you got them back.

Shodan · 02/03/2023 10:06

Not keys, but years ago, when ds2 was about 2, we got home from the supermarket to discover that he'd dropped Teddy somewhere. You can probably imagine the emotions.

On the off-chance, I rang the supermarket, and the woman who answered immediately said yes, they had Teddy, that a customer had found him and handed him in for safekeeping.

I nipped back and there Teddy was, sitting on the customer service desk, being looked after.

I was so grateful to all concerned, for understanding how precious a scruffy little brown teddy bear is to a small child, and taking the trouble to do their best to ensure bear and owner were reunited.

(Scruffy little brown bear is still a much-loved friend, even though ds2 is now 15- he is kept carefully at home, on the windowsill in his room)

Lovely that they returned them but
...that they didn't want anything for returning them, just the satisfaction of knowing they did a good deed...
I find it a bit odd that they wrote this.

Happysalley · 02/03/2023 10:16

Aww, that's nice op!

I once had to put some small cartons of apple juice back after I didn't have enough money to buy them at the till. As I was loading the kids into the car a very kind man came up and handed me the juices. He saw what happened and bought them for me. I think he regretted his decision when I promptly burst into tears (it had been a tough week!).

Not too long ago we were on a bus heading to see a friend in hospital in the next city and as I went to sit down I saw a bank card on the seat. I was going to just hand it in to the driver but when I turned it over it was my neighbour's name on it. So instead of causing her the hassle of retrieving it from the bus company I just let her know and held onto it until I saw her later.

AllOfThemWitches · 02/03/2023 10:24

I've lost important keys before and the relief when they were found was immense !

Badger1970 · 02/03/2023 10:26

How kind of someone.

I stupidly went out on a dog walk once and separated my house key to put in my back pocket with my phone. I used my phone a few times, then realised when I got home that I'd lost my key in the process.... walked the same effing walk 4 times before finding the key on the ground under a stile and close to home. I said some very colourful swear words that day Blush but I did manage 22k steps....

Choconut · 02/03/2023 10:26

OP I can't think of anything more stupid than putting your name and address on your house keys! I'm glad someone returned them but I'm even more glad that you've changed the locks!

mightymam · 02/03/2023 10:31

Why on earth would you put your address on keys?! 😂😂 Name and number if lost but the actual address?!

birthdaycardfairy · 02/03/2023 10:51

NC as regular poster and not seeking any glory, just demonstrating the impact of little gestures.

I got a letter through my letterbox at the same time as the post disruption was going on a few weeks back. Wrong address and clearly a birthday card as someone had written 'no opening until x date' which was the next day. Address was quite similar to mine but about five miles away. I recognised it because my DC used to do sports nearby. I was about to post it in a box with 'delivered to wrong address' when I thought that the houses in the street I recognised were all very small bungalows that would most likely have elderly residents. I started to think maybe it was an elderly person and could be only one of a few cards they would get so I just got in the car, drove there and posted it through the box. An elderly lady popped her head round the door and I thought I'd best explain as I don't look like the postman. The lady said it was her sister's writing who was in a care home and that she would have gone to a lot of trouble to get the card for her and have it posted. She said she wouldn't be seeing any family on her birthday and her cards meant so much. I said it was no problem at all and left. I knew there was a florist just round the corner so I bought a nice bunch of tulips and wrote on the card - Happy Birthday from your new postie. Have a lovely day - and handed them in to her before driving home. She was almost in tears and said people doing things like I did made her so happy and she never ceased to be amazed at how much goodness was in the world, even at ninety. I felt warm and fuzzy all day too.

I agree you need to Take the address off.. just put a phone number! Having a phone number on your keys is a gamechanger and might save you a lot of money one day in situs like this! Xx

TerribleInsomniac · 02/03/2023 10:58

Wow
The kindness of strangers
Theres still a lot out there
Id be weepy too.

MyriadOfTravels · 02/03/2023 10:59

Someone from Sainsbury’s once brought my ds wallet back. Ds didn’t even realise that’s where he had dropped it.
The very nice lady came to the house (!!) as there was his driving licence in there ‘because they had kept it a week and after that, it normally gets destroyed’. Everything was in there. Cards, money, and of course the driving licence.

Piggybacker · 02/03/2023 11:00

I’m pleased you got them back.

But talk me through the logo CNN of having your address on your house keys? A telephone number I can understand. But your address?

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I highly doubt some nefarious would be burglar would go to the lengths of copying the OP's house keys, then putting them in an envelope, travelling to her house and posting them through the letter box 😬

Ladydinosaur · 02/03/2023 11:04

My dad (years ago) sat down on a bench and his phone fell out of his pocket

(he was so chuffed-he hates the fact he can be contacted)

thankfully for him,my mother had taped the landline number to the back-someone found it and rang the number

they posted it back to him and a few days later,he went off to his allotment

he was walking home when he was stung by a wasp-he’s highly allergic to stings

he collapsed but as he had his phone on him,a quick thinking lady who was walking behind him, rang 999 on his phone (she didn’t have hers to hand) and found my mothers number on dads phone and alerted her

if that kind person hadn’t found it and contacted my parents, dad would have been in a lot more trouble, having been carted off to hospital and nobody could have contacted my mother as fast as they did-he wouldn’t have been missed at home as nobody was in

there are some amazing people in the world
