I'm crying at 9:45 AM because someone found my keys

Just that really. On Monday I lost my keys which consisted of three keys to the house, my car and my garage. A work fob-key and my keychain with my name and address on them. Someone's stuck them in an envelope, posted them through my door with a note that explained they found them but before they could get to me I was gone, in the note they said they were sorry they couldn't have gotten them to me sooner and that they didn't want anything for returning them, just the satisfaction of knowing they did a good deed.

I've never been more grateful for a kind stranger before.

I think I need to go lay down now, maybe cry a bit.

I'm emotional, doesn't help being 36 weeks pregnant 🤣🤣

Hey guys, how ya'll doing?

Take the address off your keys

Todaynotalways · 02/03/2023 11:14

I cried mid-pregnancy because I smelled cinnamon and it reminded me I love Christmas (it was June).

And, as others have said, take your address off your keys!

Keeping your address on your keys? What could possibly go wrong there? 😱

Yes my first thoughts too!

I once found some keys and a wallet, took them to the police station. Later on a man turned up at my door, he'd been to the police station to report them missing and been reunited then the police actually gave him my address so he could come and thank me and he offered me some money, which I refused. It was nice he wanted to thank me but I couldn't believe the police actually gave out a lone woman's address to a random man. I wouldn't give the police my name and address again.

Namechange1011111stairs · 02/03/2023 11:16

Glad you got them back. Most people are good.

Why do you have your address on your house keys?

Guis · 02/03/2023 11:18

Change your locks. They may well be a lovely soul who returned them. But you don't know and people can take keys to a shop and get keys cut. No questions asked. Do change your locks.

Namechange1011111stairs · 02/03/2023 11:18

I once cried because my orange shoes (they were nice honest!) clashed with the tiny red button (that you couldn't even see!) on my trousers. I wasn't even pregnant at the time.

gogohmm · 02/03/2023 11:22

Most people are good and honest. We forget that with all the bad news stories. We found a neighbours wallet the other day, thankfully had his driver's licence in it so dp returned it.

speakout · 02/03/2023 11:23

Would make me cry too OP.

I was in a very bad place some years ago, my life was crashing down and
I was stuck in a remote place at a bus stop, ( before mobile phones) no coat, it was snowing, , with only a few coins in my pocket, and a train ticket home-no idea when the next bus was due. My life was in chaos and I was in dire straits- I knew my future was going to be dreadful, I was losing everything.
A little Morris car drew up and a silver haired elderly woman asked if I needed a lift. I accepted- I am crying now even when I think about this story.
Her car was warm, she gave me a thick tartan blanket to wrap around me and took me to the railway station.
On the journey tears were rolling down my face- that fact that someone was so kind. She asked no questions , just talked a little about the weather, how she was a member of the local WI, did voluntary work, and how I looked like I needed a helping hand.
She dropped me off, told me to hang in there , and waved goodbye.
I still think about the kindness of that woman, who probably wasn't even going to the station, to give me- a 34 year old stranger in tatty jeans annd looking bedraggled, taking a risk herselff to extend kindness to me in a very dark time in my life.
That moment showed me how amazing other people can be, and how much love is in this world

She has changed the locks. Read the OP's post at 9.51.

BellePeppa · 02/03/2023 11:31

That’s great but having your name and address on your keys!!! 😵‍💫 just have some spares. You were lucky this time but dear Lord addresses and keys don’t belong together anymore than your PIN number stuck on your bank card.

Aposterhasnoname · 02/03/2023 11:31

Glad you got them back but keeping them on a chain with your address on it is nuts.

Guis · 02/03/2023 11:33

Beg her pardon. I am afraid I had not read all the posts. It is a bit of an issue with the Mumsnet conversations that advice gets repeated as people cannot or don't always read through previous posts. I often think an 'agreed' would condense posts and advice would be easier to digest and see. What you get instead is round robin conversations. Apologies.

Lovely that they returned them but
...that they didn't want anything for returning them, just the satisfaction of knowing they did a good deed...
I find it a bit odd that they wrote this.

So let's get this straight...

OP lost the keys to her house, her garage and her car and the fob had her name and address on them. As various people have pointed out, who in their right minds would have their name and address on their keys?
And her father just happens to be a locksmith who came round and changed one lock. But not the garage lock.
And as you've pointed out MurderSheSpoke, the person who returned them wrote in the accompanying note that they didn't want a anything for returning the keys...

Aye, right, OP. 🤔

MyBloodyBrother · 02/03/2023 11:40

My purse once fell out of my bag while I was walking a deserted stretch of the coast path. Somehow, I still haven’t worked out how they did it so quickly, someone found it and took it to the local police station and the police called me to tell me they had it while I was on the bus home from the walk. I was so grateful I burst out crying on the phone.

Not keys, but years ago, when ds2 was about 2, we got home from the supermarket to discover that he'd dropped Teddy somewhere. You can probably imagine the emotions.

On the off-chance, I rang the supermarket, and the woman who answered immediately said yes, they had Teddy, that a customer had found him and handed him in for safekeeping.

I nipped back and there Teddy was, sitting on the customer service desk, being looked after.

I was so grateful to all concerned, for understanding how precious a scruffy little brown teddy bear is to a small child, and taking the trouble to do their best to ensure bear and owner were reunited.

(Scruffy little brown bear is still a much-loved friend, even though ds2 is now 15- he is kept carefully at home, on the windowsill in his room)

Some years ago my nephew lost his toy fox in Oakhampton from Devon to the North West. I appealed on Mumsnet and a wonderful mumsnetter located him, sent holiday snaps of Fox for my nephew and then posted him home TRACKED so he wouldn't go wandering again. She refused to take payment for the postage either.

Rupert the Fox is still much loved by nephew :)

@CrispbuttyNo1 Are you still about? Do you remember Rupert?

Such a lovely reminder that there are kind people out there.

I stupidly lost an important letter whilst out walking the dog. Had all my personal details in it and I was so worried. Someone must’ve picked it up, put a stamp on it and posted it for me as it arrived safely. I was so touched. I wish I knew who they were so I could thank them.

chaosmaker · 02/03/2023 11:46

I handed a purse into a big department store it was outside the other day. Was an old fashioned clasp purse which felt like it had notes in it. Just felt very sorry for the person that dropped it and hope they think to go in the store and ask if anyone handed it in.

There are decent people about sometimes. Glad your keys were returned by one of them, @idonthaveyourwellies

Redsquirrel5 · 02/03/2023 11:52

Ah so glad you received them back OP.

Other lovely tales from posters.

To those that wish they could say thank you - Sometime in your life you will get the opportunity to 'pass it on' and this will be your thank you.🤗

NC as regular poster and not seeking any glory, just demonstrating the impact of little gestures.

I got a letter through my letterbox at the same time as the post disruption was going on a few weeks back. Wrong address and clearly a birthday card as someone had written 'no opening until x date' which was the next day. Address was quite similar to mine but about five miles away. I recognised it because my DC used to do sports nearby. I was about to post it in a box with 'delivered to wrong address' when I thought that the houses in the street I recognised were all very small bungalows that would most likely have elderly residents. I started to think maybe it was an elderly person and could be only one of a few cards they would get so I just got in the car, drove there and posted it through the box. An elderly lady popped her head round the door and I thought I'd best explain as I don't look like the postman. The lady said it was her sister's writing who was in a care home and that she would have gone to a lot of trouble to get the card for her and have it posted. She said she wouldn't be seeing any family on her birthday and her cards meant so much. I said it was no problem at all and left. I knew there was a florist just round the corner so I bought a nice bunch of tulips and wrote on the card - Happy Birthday from your new postie. Have a lovely day - and handed them in to her before driving home. She was almost in tears and said people doing things like I did made her so happy and she never ceased to be amazed at how much goodness was in the world, even at ninety. I felt warm and fuzzy all day too.

@birthdaycardfairy this is the reason I stay on MN and the Korean Lady plus the Stunt Pineapple, plus the ring found in Angel and of course more recently the Aldi Santa! 😇

@idonthaveyourwellies glad you got your keys back 😀

Hubcapdiamondstarhalo · 02/03/2023 11:55

My ds moved to a city two hours away from us. One evening we had a knock on the door from an older gentleman asking if ds lived here. I explained he had moved to the city recently. Gentleman then explained that ds's wallet had been found on a city street, and still had our address on his driving licence. The finder by weird chance knew someone who lived in our village and rang them. This was who was at our door. He then gave us the number of the finder. Ds was very grateful to be reunited with his wallet, and thankful for the good luck and kindness of two strangers. I'm still smiling now at the recollection.

Usecoooomonsnse · 02/03/2023 11:55

We have found a a full wallet on a plane seat while changing planes in Toronto and another one on a local bus in London . Both the times handed them to the staff. Hope they got to their respective owners !

catfunk · 02/03/2023 11:56

Op did you actually have your home address on your house keys ?!

Adrelaxzz · 02/03/2023 11:59

Amazing acts of kindness that have happened to haphazard me:

  1. I left my student loan check for £2000 in a cinema in a bag with my Id and £30. They easily could have used the ID to cash a cheque back in the 90s. Instead a cleaner handed it in.
  1. I left all my withdrawn savings £350 that had taken out to turn into travellers cheques in a waterstone's in a brown paper bag. Sometime so handed it in into the shop who also didn't nick it.

To even the scales last week l found an iPhone 11 on the ground in the park. We've just two percent left to go the owners Mum rang us. A very sweet almost in tears 20-year old turned up to pick it up. It was in quite a rough bit of town and he was sure it would have been nicked.
