How rude is Karen’s diner, really?

Is it personal? Would they call me a fatty and take the piss out of my big nose? My DP wants to go but I fear they will rip us to shreds!

If you put" Eddie Hall the beast Karen's diner" into YouTube it'll show the video he did of Eddie hall(worlds strongest man) and his family's experience in there.

The whole concept is awful. And misogynistic.

It's a lot of things, but how is it misogynistic? Genuinely asking here.

Ihatethenewlook · 22/02/2023 16:39

All the posters saying of course they will, they actually won’t. They’re not meant to body shame or insult anyone’s appearance in any way. They are just generally rude to you. They are not going to call you fat and tell you you have a big nose. I did read an online article once where one of them slipped up and commented on someone’s appearance and they complained about it, there was a full on investigation by the management, I think resulting in a disciplinary.

Greensleeves · 22/02/2023 16:43

The whole "Karen" thing is abhorrent and intrinsically miogynistic. It's just another depressing, lazy means of shutting up women who dare to think they have a right to assert themselves or insist on fair treatment. I wouldn't spend my money on something that propagated that toxic nonsense.

Moreover, the food looks shit.

SouperNoodle · 22/02/2023 16:45

I honestly don't see why anyone would want to go. It doesn't even look funny.

Not a place for a child

I know a couple of people who have taken children.
Why anyone would go is beyond me, but to take children somewhere where the waiting staff tell them to ‘fuck off’ has really lowered my opinion of them.

BeetleyCarapace · 22/02/2023 16:49

I cannot bear the whole 'Karen-as-an-insult' thing but I don't find myself that bothered by this for some reason.

I suppose it's everyone being in on the joke that makes the difference. They're pretty clear what it's going to be like, so you'd have to be 100% up for it to go.

OneFrenchEgg · 22/02/2023 16:52

Started watching the video (beast??)

'It's brilliant. They just threw the menus at us' erm - ok! Not my idea of a good time 😂

OneFrenchEgg · 22/02/2023 16:52

It's very basic. 'You little prick' 'are you going to fit in there?'

MrWhippersnapper · 22/02/2023 16:55

I’ve been, it was fine

FluffyRabbitSocks · 22/02/2023 17:02

We’ve been, there are no personal insults allowed from the staff or to the staff, you get given a list of house rules when you’re seated. There is lots of games you can join in with or not it’s your choice, it is more eye rolling, internal bad service. It was a bit of fun, the food was ok but very limited choice it was basically a fried chicken burger and chips, called things like “country Karen” or “Firey Karen” depending on if it was spicy, had bacon etc.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 22/02/2023 17:21

I'm not sure why on earth you are thinking of going if you don't want to risk being insulted.

I wouldn't go to one - the concept is ageist and misognyistic.

Florissant · 22/02/2023 17:22

I wouldn't go but each to their own.

nxa · 22/02/2023 17:22

I manage someone named Karen who has needed to take sick leave with anxiety because she felt so awful just having to introduce herself to new clients.

Please tell me you're not serious. I've heard it all now.

I don’t like this sort of humour, it’s basically being offensive and laughing at other people. It’s endorsed bullying. I can’t understand why people find it funny. My dh does and would love to go but I find it revolting.

Tbh, working on the other side of it as staff in 'normal' places often feels like endorsed bullying from the type of customers who I imagine this whole concept is based on.

I don't agree with the use of 'Karen' but I do think some people whom it's often used to describe need a bit of a reality check at times with the way they think it's acceptable to behave towards service staff.

Witsendwilly · 22/02/2023 17:25

People saying they don’t get it. That’s fair enough, but it’s an international brand and concept, not just a UK thing.

I fully expect it will be gone in a couple of years and can’t imagine people go as a monthly treat, but as a one off trip for a laugh I wouldn’t be tempted if we were near one.

They are actually doing a British pop up tour, and seem to be doing quite well.

Like everything it’s not for everyone, but fair play to them for seeing a gap an opportunity and going for it.

TanyaandGreg · 22/02/2023 18:18

I’ve just watched one video where a staff member sings a song where they call a female customer a slag and say her fanny has started to sag. That’s maybe why some people call it misogynistic.

Tekkentime · 22/02/2023 18:20

Is it actually funny or are the staff just being pointlessly rude?

I saw a tik tok where a child was told to fuck off.

Is it fine for men to treat staff like shit?
If not why do women get a special name and men do not?
That is what misogyny is, hating a woman specifically, when men are treated differently.

Everyone who treats service staff like shit is an gender neutral arsehole.

Why are there so many spelling mistakes on their website? [Pedant alert]

Because their target demographic is too thick to notice?

What on Earth happened to going out for a delicious dinner and being appreciated for your custom.

Did I miss a memo?
