Another mass missile attack through the night. Nothing screams bravery like bombing civilians whilst they sleep Angry

Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has lost all connection to the electrical grid (again) and has 10 days worth of power through diesel generators.

(www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/03/08/russia-ukraine-war-news-bakhmut/?utm_source=telegram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=wp_main)- Missiles rained down and blasts went off across Ukraine early Thursday. Russian missiles struck the Kharkiv region 15 times, the governor said on Telegram, while officials in Odessa said that they were experiencing a β€œmassive” missile attack, with no casualties reported so far.

  • In Kyiv, air raid alerts blared for more than four hours, the Kyiv regional military administration said on Telegram.
  • There were strikes on critical infrastructure and residential buildings in both Kharkiv and Odessa. Officials in Kharkiv are working to determine whether there were casualties. In Odessa, the government said they’ve intercepted missiles but cautioned residents to stay in shelters ahead of a second wave of attacks.

  • European Union defense ministers gathered Wednesday in Sweden for talks over support for Kyiv.
  • The E.U. military assistance mission to Ukraine will have trained more than 11,000 Ukrainian soldiers by the end of this month, Borrell told reporters, and expects to train 30,000 by the end of this year.

  • The head of the Wagner mercenary group claimed that his forces have taken control of the β€œentire eastern part” of Bakhmut, which has been at the center of intense fighting.

Meant to add:

Certainly if minor damage was done to elements of the non essential structure (e.g. by lightweight drone attack) then you could possibly do enough in the way of Battle Damage repair (rivets, lightweight Alu panels, even speed tape) to allow a low speed, low altitude unpressurised flight to a main repair facility.

Question is how much damage was done to the mission critical avionics….

Ukraine is building up its forces for the offensive, β€” The Economist
As the publication writes, 40% of all military aid, which the Pentagon promised to Ukraine since the beginning of the war, was received in 3 months, starting from December 9, 2022. In addition, the arms deliveries agreed upon by Germany in January 2023 constitute 2/3 of the total amount of aid sent to Ukraine last year.
Thus, almost a third of the Ukrainian army will soon have weapons according to NATO standards.
The publication also refers to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, emphasizing that, in his opinion, the Armed Forces will eventually have three new army corps of 20,000 personnel. And all of them will be trained and armed according to NATO standards.

Im feeling increasingly concerned about US Rep push back against funding for Ukraine.

I don't fully understand the details of Presidential vs Congressional powers, does anyone know when Rep reluctance might start to have a real constraining effect on support or is it just hot air?

This is a soldier of the fire support company of the 163rd battalion of the Territorial Defense of the city of Nizhyn, of the 119th brigade of TRO forces, Oleksandr Igorovich Matsievskyi."

Notable that India is starting to pay Russia in roubles. Russia has been demanding this and trying to establish the rouble as a new common-currency. Afaik this is the first major economy to play ball.

Also notable that the new Speaker of the House of Representatives refused the invitation to go to Ukraine.

McCarthy has a very, very narrow majority to work with in the House, four votes I think. About 20 of his members are skeptical or anti-aid for Ukraine, while about 200 are pro-Ukraine. Republicans in the Senate and most Democrats are pro-Ukraine funding. The Republican leader in the Senate (Mitch McConnell) has been instrumental in pushing Biden to send more military aid faster.

McCarthy is walking a fine line of not committing to either side so that he doesn't lose the votes of the skeptics on other issues, including his own leadership position.

Lots of aid for Ukraine is already baked into this year's budget and can't be undone. We'll have to see how things shape up for next year.

So the short answer is, it's 90% hot air.

Surplus2requirements · 09/03/2023 14:24

Thanks @MissConductUS that's reassuring.

MissConductUS · 09/03/2023 14:29

On the question of congressional vs presidential authority, congress has the power of the purse. Biden can send the aid already authorized at his sole discretion, when and how he wants.

I'm watching the whole situation closely but am not greatly concerned at the moment.

And you're welcome. πŸ˜€

Yes, it is very funny - although quite clever in a way. There has been a call recently to serve more squirrel in restaurants - because the grey squirrel (imported from America) is a pest and in many areas has ousted the native red squirrel.

See for example - www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-11806809/Restaurants-urged-serve-nutritious-grey-squirrel-meat.html

But it is a conservation move, not a financial one.

On the other hand we have had quite a lot of shortages on our supermarket shelves recently - eggs and various fruits and vegetables. From what I can gather, a confluence of causes although Brexit is probably the most prominent (if there is less than usual, and you can sell what you have to the rest of Europe, why bother with the additional bureaucracy needed to export to a different country)

Naem · 09/03/2023 16:05

So all in all, they have put together a range of true factors and made 2 plus 2 equal five - which is a lot cleverer than the usual absolute rubbish.

Back before the fall of the Iron Curtain Pravda once reported that food inflation was so bad in America that a loaf of ordinary black bread cost $10.
It was true that a fancy New York deli was selling rye bread at that price….

It was true that a fancy New York deli was selling rye bread at that price….

Even Zabar's, which is the fanciest NY Deli I know, is only charging $7 for a loaf of Rye bread.

I have heard about the fruit and veg shortage in the UK, mostly here on MN. I am a bit surprised that there is some suggestion to actually serve squirrel in the UK. I will look forward to a thread on "AIBU to expect chips and veg with my squirrel at Wetherspoons?".

terrywynne · 09/03/2023 17:04

First I've heard that we are supposed to eat squirrel in restaurants!

Egg shortage has a lot to do with bird flu. My local butcher said one of their suppliers lost over 100k birds and Β£12million.

Fruit and veg seems to be weather mixed with Brexit logistics. That said we have tomato's and pepper back in our local shop so hopefully it's getting better.

Surplus2requirements · 09/03/2023 17:17

There was a push to serve squirrel a few years ago to help prevent the spread of Greys into Red territory.

It was thought monetising the culling that was happening in crucial areas anyway would help.

There's not much eating on them, though it's nice enough so I guess they were hoping to start a gourmet trend.

L1ttledrummergirl · 09/03/2023 18:19

Personally if it got that bad, I'd keep rabbits or guinea pigs to keep the family fed. Says the vegetarian.
