My dc don't believe me that this is an actual word! And tbf to them, it's not one I hear much anymore. Just wondering how widely known it is.

Is it the same (different spelling) as an ankh? Then yes, I do!

BertieBotts · 19/02/2023 21:39

Is it that symbol that Goths wear? I don't think I've ever seen it written down.

Dunnoburt · 19/02/2023 21:40

A Scottish inch? 😁

BertieBotts · 19/02/2023 21:40

Ah ok, i thought it was ankh too!

Believers · 19/02/2023 21:41

No, none of those! I need someone to know so I can show my dc!

Never heard of anch before but like others I know what an ankh is.

RoseslnTheHospital · 19/02/2023 21:41

As with others, I know what an ankh is but haven't come across "anch".

ghislaine · 19/02/2023 21:42

A little anchor?

InsufficientMum · 19/02/2023 21:43

An ankh is the Egyptian symbol for life. My DD (10) will know what it is and I imagine any other child who has read Percy Jackson and then read the other books by the same author. If it's not, not a clue!

Tapenade · 19/02/2023 21:44

The Cambridge English Dictionary doesn’t seem to know it either.

Is it some kind of regional slang?

AlmostSpring2023 · 19/02/2023 21:44

An Australian saying inch.

mygrandchildrenrock · 19/02/2023 21:44

My son says it’s a cross with a curvy thing at the top, possibly Egyptian.

QuietlyConfident · 19/02/2023 21:44

Nope. Ankh yes.

That's an ankh.

YewandOak · 19/02/2023 21:44

Anch: low life scoundrel. Untrustworthy. Without honour.

SoupDragon · 19/02/2023 21:45

I've never heard of it either (nor has Chambers Dictionary)

Needmorelego · 19/02/2023 21:45

I had to Google it. Spelt with either the c or a k it seems.
I wouldn't have known that's what they're called.

Do you know what an anch is?
Believers · 19/02/2023 21:45

Maybe it is regional - I grew up in Wales. An anch is a big bite out of something.

CinnabarRed · 19/02/2023 21:46

Not a clue. Are you sure it’s not regional slang? It’s not coming up in any dictionary I can access.

EVHead · 19/02/2023 21:46

Never heard it.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 19/02/2023 21:46

A short version of anchorite? Like those nuns who bricked themselves in?

CinnabarRed · 19/02/2023 21:46

Cross post!

Needmorelego · 19/02/2023 21:46

I mean....if that's what you are referring to @Believers .

Needmorelego · 19/02/2023 21:47

Oh...not what I said then 🙂

CinnabarRed · 19/02/2023 21:47

Looks like it’s just you!
