My dc don't believe me that this is an actual word! And tbf to them, it's not one I hear much anymore. Just wondering how widely known it is.

I’m Welsh and never heard of it

BertieBotts · 19/02/2023 21:52

Is it a Ch sound like munch? I've never heard it, but don't have any North Wales connections.

Whataretheodds · 19/02/2023 21:52

It's Welsh (colloquial) for bite

Yes. I'm from south wales so don't know if it's used in north wales. Although until tonight, I didn't realise it wasn't a widely known word.

I thought it was a bite? As in give me an Anch of that??

PlusLaMeme · 19/02/2023 22:01

I've lived here all my life bar 10 years of young adulthood, and I honestly haven't heard that word before, even in my Welsh-Welsh circles.
Every day's a school day, eh?!

flutterbyebaby · 19/02/2023 22:04

It's the Egyptian key of life

Ame45 · 19/02/2023 22:05

There’s a restaurant in Cardiff called Ansh

WelshDaffodil · 19/02/2023 22:06

My mother says it, she is from the South Wales valleys

I've been to Ansh. It's an Indian restaurant. And the word Ansh is Indian

Just googled it, and ironically Ansh in Indian means a serving of food, so linked to anch in a way I suppose

(I know the restaurant isn't linked to the Welsh word anch because I know the owners)

Believers · 19/02/2023 22:12

Oh so nothing to do with anch then. I'm pleased that some people have heard of it, my dc thought I was making it up!

I was brought up in England but my parents were from South Wales and I've never heard either of them use the expression. Maybe it's very localised.

Whataretheodds · 19/02/2023 22:17

There's also an excellent burger joint in Cardiff called Anch
www.ansh.cymru/

Whataretheodds · 19/02/2023 22:17

Ansh!

CoedenNadoligLanOHyd · 19/02/2023 22:18

I'm welsh and immediately knew it meant bite!

Ame45 · 19/02/2023 22:19

Yes- Ansh Cardiff is lovely- sustainable Welsh burgers

Believers · 19/02/2023 22:20

So it seems that, even in Wales, it's not that well known.
