Are we allowed to talk about Peter Faulding?

I just can’t understand what he was thinking??

On the one hand, very kindly donating his time and expertise.

On the other hand, he turned this case into a circus.

His categorical declarations sent people wild with speculation. It’s awful, and I just can’t understand why he did it.

I was remotely aware that this guy was talking way too much. It was a red flag. I think the police should have had a word with him. I hope they learn from this. This is not a criticism of the police - I think they did okay.

Don't tell me to stop. I'm not the one making personal attacks on people across threads.

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/02/2023 21:01

Then why not just report the posts?

pigsinoodies · 20/02/2023 21:03

Already done

But that’s not what the poster is saying and you know it. It’s unclear what the colour of your skin has to do with it or what extra validity you think it gives your comment.

The poster is right: this level of attention is never given to missing women of working class backgrounds or women from ethnic minorities. That is a fact. This is not about anything Nicola has done but rather the way society works and the biases that run through it.

Getting outrage about this sad fact that not all women are equal in the sight of society is itself outrageous because it means we can never achieve progress when people like you gaslight and deny reality.

All that said, the outcome is sad. Everyone wanted Nicola to be found safe. I am so devastated for her children.

I mentioned my skin colour to make it clear that "people like me" (interesting categorisation - I assume you mean a person of colour who doesn't think in the way we're supposed to?) don't feel jealousy towards a white woman getting lots of attention for a tragic life and death. Given that the media and police portrayed her as a menopausal lush and treated her with complete disrespect, I think many people would prefer to forgo that sort of attention.

I'm sure her husband also relished the "privilege" of the over-excited mob pointing the finger at him.

This is sadly not the first time a so called "expert" using side scan sonar has made the same claim. In August 2012 a claim was made by a "Duncan Winsbury" who was CEO of "Sarbot" that a young boy who went missing in Burnham-on-Sea was not there. The boy was found very soon after - exactly where that "expert" said he wasn't. Self-proclaimed experts should never, ever be given any air time, as they cause more problems and heartache.

Both families (along with many more) have lost a loved one, and whilst the media has an important role to play in helping to find people they really should stop allowing broadcast to those who spout nonsense and badly-judged claims.

Rest in peace all those lost.

picklemewalnuts · 21/02/2023 08:53

Thank you for posting the family's statement, @pigsinoodies I hadn't seen it.

I found it very powerful.

I agree. These bold claims by PF really stirred up the speculation and theories and he owes the family a huge apology for overstating the effectiveness of his search and giving fuel to frenzy

MaggieFS · 21/02/2023 09:59

I agree @SweetSakura @Dazzledbytheoptions but I also loop back to the point I made about the police giving him space to make these proclamations. (And the media providing the platforms)

SweetSakura · 21/02/2023 10:01

Yes that's a fair comment too @MaggieFS

Dazzledbytheoptions · 21/02/2023 10:28

I entirely agree.

CaveatmTOR · 24/02/2023 07:14

This guy is now claiming that because she was found in the river right by the road, she was dumped into the Wyre from the road. Is there no limit to this man's awfulness in relation to this case?

Sep200024 · 24/02/2023 07:32

Has he? Where has he said that?

OP posts:
MaggieFS · 24/02/2023 17:04

I haven't seen that, where's he said that? If so he really doesn't know when to stop, does he!

bellac11 · 24/02/2023 17:11

Thats really shocking, the police need to speak to him

KokoB · 24/02/2023 19:23

He hasn’t said it and that post should be withdrawn.

KokoB · 24/02/2023 19:23

He hasn’t said it and that post should be withdrawn.

He certainly put the theory out there but phrased quite carefully.

Something like "It wouldn't be right to speculate but the road is close to where the body was found and it's possible that...".

pigsinoodies · 24/02/2023 19:59

Around 2:40 in this video:

pigsinoodies · 24/02/2023 20:08

"Well you know I don't want to start speculation, there is a potential, it's on a corner, it's a perfect deposition site.and it's right next to a wall...that is a possibility but I don't want to spark speculation on that, but she was not in the river the day we searched"

pigsinoodies · 24/02/2023 20:09

Notably the body (that apparently wasn't in the river) was recovered by a diver working under the surface on a safety line.

Somebody made a video on You Tube about this very thing. It was a long watch, about 80 minutes, in fact. But it covers just how much speculation Peter Faulding was guilty of, and how he was basically the ringleader of the 'armchair detectives' he purported to condemn. I think the guy is a sad, self-serving weasel, with no shame whatsoever. His job was to search the river and that is all. Instead he spoke to the media daily, throwing out wild speculation, criticising the police in a really underhanded way, AND sharing details of private conversations he was having with a grieving husband. The man is sick in the head.

This is a shame because it comes across as self serving and not speculation that will benefit the grieving family in any way. So it’s unnecessary.
