Anyone on this thread who hasn't got a copy of The Meaning of Liff needs to get one!Grin

We had a whole Mumsnet Meaning of Liff thread once; The MN meaning of Liff www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/1213164-The-MN-meaning-of-Liff

Furzefield and Furzton, which mean "fart field" and "farting sound" in German respectively.

My hometown always gets mentioned on these threads or media articles etc.

I’m very happy it hasn’t been mentioned yet!

Penistone?

Dogballs in Cornwall, couldn’t believe it was a real place until my ex took me there and I saw the sign!

Dobwalls! Not Dogballs 😂

We do however have Water-Ma-Trout industrial estate in Helston, which has always tickled me. And Cocks, near Perranporth. Praze-an-Beeble.

elQuintoConyo · 19/02/2023 23:04

Lyminge in Kent (pronounced, rather Frenchly, as Le Minge)

Fanjeax in France, nearish Carcassone way. I have a photo of me next to the sign!

Peñiscola in Spain, just up the coast from Valencia.

elQuintoConyo · 19/02/2023 23:05

Is Gropecunt Lane still called that in Norwich?

Sandysandwich · 19/02/2023 23:05

I came on to say Tiddlywink is near me but was beaten to it. A nearby village is The Shoe, which always amuses me.

userno777 · 20/02/2023 00:07

Tough. It has a school too.

newtb · 20/02/2023 00:15

Condom, also in France

HyacinthineMacaw · 20/02/2023 00:29

Nempnett Thrubwell. A real place in Somerset, and immortalised in song by The Wurzels.

MeetPi · 20/02/2023 00:43

Come by Chance (NSW): A settler won this parcel of land in a sort of lottery, so that's how it came by its name. It's now a small town.

Woolloomooloo (NSW) is a Sydney suburb derived from an indigenous word meaning 'young male kangaroo'.

Wangi Wangi (NSW): another indigenous term meaning 'by the waters'. The town is by a lake.

Burrumbuttock (NSW): yet another indigenous name meaning 'bullock's backbone'.
Bungle Bungles (NT): This is a beautiful National Park in WA. It sounds like it's derived from indigenous language, but consensus seems to be it actually refers to clumps of grass (bundles). The indigenous word for the landforms in the park is quite different.

Can you tell I adore words and their etymology?

Changingmynameyetagain · 20/02/2023 00:53

There’s scratchy bottom in Dorset and nob end in Bolton.

powershowerforanhour · 20/02/2023 00:55

"It's not rude but Paradise, just outside Stroud always amused me."

In Northern Ireland we have an Edenordinary.

Saschka · 20/02/2023 01:00

Not as funny as some of these, but Bat and Ball (Kent) always seemed like a ridiculous place name. As does Pratt’s Bottom. Green Street Green just sounds like somebody got distracted halfway through naming it.

DatasCat · 20/02/2023 01:12

We regularly go past Lady Gardens in Eardisley on our way to pick DD up from uni.

I’m always mildly amused by Burlingjobb, Evenjobb and Abbey-cwm-hir too.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 20/02/2023 01:17

I’ve always loved saying « Abitibi-Témiscamingue »

TheAustralian · 20/02/2023 01:20
