Can someone please explain my EDF bill?

Just received my bill from EDF and can't understand it at all.

I was in credit for 1242. My charges are 822.08.

But they've also charged me £333 'refunds' which are the 5 payments I've received from the government for COL.

My credit is now £86.92 so they've definitely deducted them.

Am I being really stupid here? I thought they were government assistance that we didn't have to pay back?

Hi did you get to the bottom of this? I’ve just noticed the same on my bill. It makes no sense at all why they have added the government payment amount onto my bill.

This was the explanation I got :

I had used (made up figures) £890 of energy in the six month period and had paid £550 in direct debits therefore I was in debt by £340. The bill showed NOT £890 but £890 minus the £400 grant so I thought I had used £490 worth of energy and was in credit.

After reading about EDF and working out your bill it is totally bonkers.
(Forget the refund for a minute as this is NOT in the bill calculation or has been deducted)
I have had a debit from last bill of £566 add this to my new bill £2835 = £3401 payments made £1794 = £1607 so why does MY NEW BILL = £1873 ?
Now lets go back to the government refund which is not deducted in the bill calculation which was £266 paid back into my bank,( from the government) this was not EDF money or a credit from them YET if you ADD this to my bill it = £1873????? Can anyone explain as trying to get hold of EDF is like getting a knock at the door saying you won the postcode lottery.
