Anyone experience hair damage from using Olaplex

My daughter started using Olaplex several months ago, her hair has never been in such bad condition, it is dreadful, dry, brittle and a lot of hair loss, she never even considered it might be caused by Olaplex, but now with this report, it looks like she could also be one of those users who have actually damaged their hair by using this product.

Anyone else have a poor outcome when using it?

I moved to Philip Kingsley's Elasticiser and I have noticed much better results.

@Plump82 @Iamatissuebox the one I always go back to us Tresemme Keratin Smooth shampoo and conditioner.

@magicthree which one do you use? Every sulphate free shampoo makes my hair feel unwashed and strawlike but am willing to give another a try.

I actually used to always use that but have found it really hard to find in the shops where I live and because I work from home, don't have a chance to look in bigger Boots etc. I do use the conditioner of that. Will need to get an online order done.

With these reports and the reports of the eyelash serums causing fat loss around the eye, I’m suddenly really glad I’m such a slattern when it comes to my beauty regime.

I honestly think we’re also going to end up with a HUGE class lawsuit against Botox at some point.

Yes I agree, but not just with Botox, but many other cosmetic procedures.
I honestly feel like Suzan Collins (think I've spelt her name right) was spot on with her 'Hunger Games' description of people in the 'Capital'.

My hairdresser recommended Olaplex No. 4 bond maintenance shampoo, conditioner and smoother, I hated how my hair looked and felt after using them, went back and asked if this was normal (hair heavy and flat, greasy looking but so dry, no shine or life in it), she blamed menopause for my hair condition and hair loss, I took her at her word and continued using it until I was away for a few days and forgot it so used the cheap stuff supplied by a hotel and realised that my hair instantly looked better, haven't used Olaplex since, last visit to hairdresser had her try tell me it was a different type of Olaplex I needed, needless to say she got no sale that day. She's an excellent colourist otherwise I'd be changing to avoid to hard-sell effort.

@Plump82 I find it in my big Sainsbury’s. It’s my good hair day shampoo.

I bet you that cheaper shampoo had sodium laureth sulphate as the near top ingredient. Does the job.

Wait…what?! Which eyelash serums allegedly do that?! 🫣

HappenstanceMarmite · 17/02/2023 13:33

Are we talking about Olaplex 2 or 3? The treatment itself? Or the newer range of shampoos et al fron 3 onwards?

Oh no, I have it in now and just bought the shampoo and conditioner.

Calphurnia88 · 17/02/2023 16:57

I've used Olaplex 3 sporadically with no ill effects but these reports have concerned me, especially since I have fine hair that's become noticeably sparser (to me, anyway) post partum.

I'll probably use up my last bottle but won't replace it.

I stopped using eyelash serum when I was pregnant, haven't used whilst BF and from the looks of things won't be starting that again either!

Calphurnia88 · 17/02/2023 16:58

If it makes any difference I've only ever used Olaplex on the ends of my hsurx lever on the scalp.

Calphurnia88 · 17/02/2023 16:59

*only on the ends of my hair, never on my scalp.

Gremlins!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 17/02/2023 17:04

I've used it a few times and my hair has felt good!

At the end of the day, hair is dead and it can take only so much dyeing and heat styling.

fatisnotafeeling · 17/02/2023 17:48

I can't use it at all, made my hair very brittle and prone to breaking. I brought something similar from curl smith and my hair is lovely after using that.

At the moment I am using Aussie Miracle Curls Co-Wash, but I have used many different sulphate-free shampoos over the years, and have had no issues with any of them. I'm in NZ so may be using different products to what is available in the UK.

AnonymousHippopotamus · 17/02/2023 20:56

I've completely given up on regular hair products. All the stuff I've tried over the years - olaplex, frizz ease, Aussie, I've tried all sorts over the years - have been of no particular benefit, although I've never had any hair loss or blisters. I switched to more natural cruelty-free, sulphate-free and paraben-free stuff and, as others said, they don't actually get your hair that clean. I would find dry shampoo residue still on my scalp after twice-washing, conditioning and drying my hair!

Now I've switched to solid shampoo bars made of actual soap, and put a bit of oil on my hair if it feels dry. I use cornflour as a dry shampoo, and have recently been experimenting with home made sea salt spray. Honestly, my hair is great now and only needs washing once or twice a week. I don't do a lot of heat styling, which probably helps.

Anyway, my point is fuck 'em, all this marketing guff and empty promises the beauty industry makes - we don't really need it. I can think of better things to spend my money on.

lieselotte · 17/02/2023 21:03

I've had the treatment a couple of times after having highlights but last time I went I didn't bother. Earlier incarnations of it had dodgy ingredients like lilial.

I like Aveda, Aveeno (and to get away from the Av theme, Liz Earle) for shampoo and condtioner.

Beenalongwinter · 01/04/2023 08:02

My hair started falling out after using Olaplex. I emailed Olaplex photos along with my receipt and Olaplex refunded my money in Less than 12 hours (via PayPal. )

I happened to see a shampoo for reviving follicles ( by accident while ordering Ozempic for weight loss but that's another story) .

The power shampoo is the only thing that helped my hair recover I would never use Olaplex again. The shampoo is gentle and you only need a tiny amount leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing . Half price at the moment.

As far as I’m aware the ingredient in olaplex that’s causing a problem is banned in the EU. It’s only users in the USA that are having issues with it. I’ve been using olaplex 6 for years, when I blow dry my hair with no issue. Although, the Philip Kingsley elasticised is really good but I use it only once a week.

teneastereggs · 02/04/2023 18:06

It made my hair very dry and straw like so I had to stop using it.

cucumberegg · 02/04/2023 18:13

I love it. I use 0 and 3 twice a week and leave it on overnight. Always wash with 4 and 5 and normally use 6 when I'm drying. I've seen a huge improvement over a few months. Would definitely recommend. Only one I wouldn't bother with is the serum (no 9 I think).

SecretVictoria · 02/04/2023 18:22

I’ve used it for years and had no issues. I was told to use sulphate free otherwise colours will fade quicker. I used to use Pureology but they were taken over IIRC and just weren’t the same. I tried Kerastase but, although it made my hair lovely, I came out in a rash, so I’m obviously allergic to one of the ingredients 😔

NutellaEllaElla · 02/04/2023 18:23

I use most of the range and am happy with it but the shampoo isn't great for cleaning so I could be in the market for something else but good knows what as no sulphate free shampoos I've tried actually clean my hair
