Car insurance renewal 😣

Boshi · 11/02/2023 14:53

If you have renewed your car insurance this year how did it compare to last year?

I usually expect it to go up a bit but mine has gone up £700 from £900.

Is that a bit steep? I know the cost of living has gone up but I didn’t expect it to affect car insurance

Yes I will, nothing risky about us, early 40s professional/sahm, quiet area, car is bog standard family car.. all very strange. Still it’s good to know it’s unusual so will persevere with getting a better quote

@Boshi daft question - it is the same car isn't it ?

Pixiedust1234 · 11/02/2023 23:05

Good grief, is your car made of gold?

I've never been over £300 for fully comp. This year mine is £240ish with added breakdown cover, legal and ncd protected. Excess is £100 voluntary. I have had Fiestas and Focus cars.

What extras are you adding? Anyone with conviction or accidents?

I think a lot depends on the area. Mine is still over £300 and has been £600 before
For a VW polo fully comp

Boshi · 11/02/2023 23:14

@mycatsanutter yeah it’s the same car we’ve had for 5 years now, 7 seater volvo car.. no convictions, just a claim in 2018

so jealous of the quote you are all getting 😅

Yep mine has gone up £50 and nothing has changed. Renewal and comparison sites are the same price.

AdelaideRo · 11/02/2023 23:17

My quote went up loads in December (£300 extra on a £600 policy and as I’m rebuilding no-claims after not having my own car I’d expected it to go down).

I got a really good deal on a comparison site for around £400.

FavouriteSlippers · 11/02/2023 23:24

Even when i was a new driver on my own policy no additional drivers etc 1.6 focus. Was only £356 in a rough area.

I don't know what mine is now tbh as its done via work so i dont pay it although its my own car.

Sometimes if a car is getting older it goes up as if have an accident it costs more to repair and source parts. Or get it written off knowing the excess prob more than a pay out.

Maybe have a play with some registration plates as if u were buying a new car.

Also what's your profession. If its like a driving job it can be higher as more likely to be in an accident so to speak.

Rebellious23 · 11/02/2023 23:30

I've just put mine through and it looks similar to last year
Car hire/breakdown included
1.2 VW polo 2014
7 years no claims

£339

Recently, every renewal we have, seems to just add on some ridiculous amount for no reason.
For me, getting better quotes from comparison sights usually leads to me ringing my company and they either match it, or don't and then I go with the better quote.

I can't work out what is going on with your quotes today though.

Ljc1985 · 11/02/2023 23:32

My renewal came through this morning and I'm being quoted £200 more and nothings changed so time to get some new quotes

Where do people shop around these days?

FavouriteSlippers · 11/02/2023 23:33

Also if u use comparison sites. If for example it comes up with tesco. Go to tesco direct and do a quote as normally cheaper. I used to do this and worked.

FavouriteSlippers · 11/02/2023 23:33

Compare the market
Go compare

Normally, as Direct Line were good when I made a claim years ago, I give them a call and get them to knock money off if they put the price up. This year they put it up so much - 25% - I thought that was absolutely taking the piss and I went straight elsewhere. Same cover for below last year's premium price.

Direct Line is making f all money so not surprised they need to charge more.

Do you think insurers run on thin air?

Claims inflation is a massive issue for motor insurers at the moment. There’s been a lot in the press about this and all the insurers have commented on this in their results announcements.

Moneysupermarket....the one by the moneyman Martin Lewis, but go compare (stupid opera singer man adv) or compare the market (meercats advert) are similar.

LeafHunter · 11/02/2023 23:41

Ours is about £250 for one car and £400 for the other. We always shop around and use top cashback but I haven’t had it over 700 since I was a student, despite living in a variety of locations with a variety of cars!

Rebellious23 · 12/02/2023 11:00

Don't forget to use Quidco! You can often get £30-50 back
