Would you think someone wearing a crucifix at work was religious?

Or would you think it was just fashion jewellery, or maybe sentimental?

Would you care and would you judge them (good or bad) in any way?

I wear a crucifix, it has family links but I'm also a Christian.

At work there have been some passing derogatory comments about religion/ religious people.
I wonder whether my crucifix has been noticed and what they think it represents?

Well, yes, as it’s an obvious symbol, I would assume they were a practising Christian. No judgement, although I suppose I would “clock” that that person was religious and might be more careful about what I said in certain situations so as not to offend?

Nimbostratus100 · 11/02/2023 09:29

why do you care? wear it with pride. I recently underwent a horrendous time with two anaesthetists trying and failing to get lines in me for an operation. One was wearing a crucifix, and I found it very reassuring, and told her so. If it means something to you, its nice to see. If it doesn't, it isn't hurting anyone

Suzi888 · 11/02/2023 09:30

I would think it may be for fashion or religion or both and that would be it (if I noticed at all).

Depends on style of crucifix. Small crucifix = religious. Large, ornate, embellished crucifix = goth.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 11/02/2023 09:32

If it's a crucifix I would assume you were RC. No judgement from me.

Aurorabored · 11/02/2023 09:32

I’d assume they were the proselytising kind of Christian if they wore a visible crucifix necklace.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 11/02/2023 09:33

It's ridiculous - we all have to kowtow to the gender mob and proclaim our pronouns but religious people aren't allowed to show their faith. Why not?

(I'm an atheist by the way, so no skin in the religious faith game - just don't understand what's sauce for the goose isn't sauce for the gander...)

Idlikeasize8please · 11/02/2023 09:36

I know a few people in work who wear a crucifix pendant. For me it an emblem of their faith. However, I would not judge - I'm not sure what I would judge for? As long as they are doing their job.

We have a colleague in work who is a committed Christian and super lovely. We were 2 of the people in a large stressful meeting regarding a critical incident.

On hearing a negative update - someone said "Jesus Christ" to which she quickly interjected seamlessly with "Our Lord and saviour-amen".

It was perfect for that high stress meeting! 😁

UWhatNow · 11/02/2023 09:36

I don’t think wearing a crucifix necklace is shoving religion in anyone’s face but people seem to be terribly ‘offended’ by everything these days. You actually have a legal right to be free to practise and express your religion so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Strongboat · 11/02/2023 09:36

I would assume they were a Christian. I don't imagine I would judge negatively, I would respect their beliefs.

WhatNoRaisins · 11/02/2023 09:38

It would depend on the style I think

ChatInMyFlat · 11/02/2023 09:40

I wear a cross I was given at my christening by my nan. I'm not remotely religious.

Who cares what anyone else thinks.

ConfusedGin · 11/02/2023 09:40

Depends on style of crucifix. Small crucifix = religious. Large, ornate, embellished crucifix = goth.

This but also taking into account regularity. Every day, more likely to be religious and / or sentimental reasons. Occasionally, a choice or fashion statement.

How obvious is it to your colleagues? If it's always tucked away under tops or peaking behind collars, it's possible that they haven't noticed it. I had one colleague who wore the same necklace every day, over her tops, with lower cut items etc. I noticed that.

I don't notice or recall others who change up or layer or hide their jewellery. I wore a small cross to school and no one ever really noticed. It was against dress code but most teachers turned a blind eye and just asked me to cover it as it was deemed religious and they let that slide

afinishedkiss · 11/02/2023 09:42

Not if it was upside down.

Houseplantmad · 11/02/2023 09:45

I’d think you were Christian and then that would be that. No judgment. No offence. Each to their own.

Renoir56 · 11/02/2023 09:46

I'm not religious but I wear a small gold cross on a chain because it belonged to my late mum.

Sugarfree23 · 11/02/2023 09:46

I'd assume RC or plain cross other denomination.
Both fairly obviously Christian symbols. No different from a Star of David or turban.

PetitPorpoise · 11/02/2023 09:50

I wouldn't but that's because my parents wear matching ones that they bought while they were engaged in the 80s. I've also had one from Claire's Accessories that I bought to wear to a Madonna concert.

ElizaGumpyLeg · 11/02/2023 09:51

I’d think they were probably Christian (though if it’s a crucifix on some random fashion show hint that’s not a given) and wouldn’t judge it at all. It’s absurd to me that anyone would get pissy over someone wearing a normal crucifix necklace

KangarooKenny · 11/02/2023 09:51

If it was a short necklace with a small, simple cross, I’d think religion.
If it was big and tacky on a long chain I’d think fashion.

I’d assume they were the proselytising kind of Christian if they wore a visible crucifix necklace.

An incorrect assumption. Evangelicals generally don't wear crucifixes.

donquixotedelamancha · 11/02/2023 09:56

At work there have been some passing derogatory comments about religion/ religious people.

What sort of derogatory comments? Saying they think belief in God is silly over lunch, for example, is fine but stereotyped comments about groups or individuals is not.

If the latter you need to deal with it just as you would about any other minority.

Ncgirlseriously · 11/02/2023 09:57

I’d assume it was either a religious thing or a sentimental thing. Personally I don’t think religion should be discussed at work at all, really.

Girasoli · 11/02/2023 09:58

Small cross I'd think Christian, big cross I'd think fashion. I wouldn't care either way.

(I'm Catholic myself)
