Would you think someone wearing a crucifix at work was religious?

Or would you think it was just fashion jewellery, or maybe sentimental?

Would you care and would you judge them (good or bad) in any way?

I wear a crucifix, it has family links but I'm also a Christian.

At work there have been some passing derogatory comments about religion/ religious people.
I wonder whether my crucifix has been noticed and what they think it represents?

I work with a number of scarf wearing Muslim women and Christians who wear crucifixes, and we all have a lovely time.

BackAgainstWall · 11/02/2023 10:03

I wouldn’t care or even give it a second thought.

Phos · 11/02/2023 10:08

I guess so yeah, but I'd see it very much like someone wh chose to wear a hijab, turban or a kippah and not really give it a second thought until I was forced to as part of a diversity training exercise.

I wouldn't think anything. As you say in your OP, there's lots of reasons a person may wear a crucifix. It's not as definitive as a hijab or kippah.

Oigetoffmylawn · 11/02/2023 10:09

But I also wouldn't judge anyone wearing and religious regalia.

Oblomov23 · 11/02/2023 10:09

I can tell the difference between a fashion piece and a religion. Would assume they were a practicing Christian. And that they wanted people to know that, or else why wear a statement piece that is deliberately visible.

BeatricePortinari · 11/02/2023 10:10

The comments aren't hugely offensive.

I think there's just more of an assumption that no one is religious. Like: who would would still go to church?? Or hating Christian music.

A dismissive attitude of it's all old fashioned nonsense.

So I'm not offended, it just made me think: there is an assumption here no one is religious (which is interesting in itself) but I wear a crucifix, so I wondered if they'd have noticed or thought about it.

If it's got Jesus on it I'd think you religious but I wouldn't care less

gogohmm · 11/02/2023 10:15

I wear a small cross, I've never spoken to anyone about religion unsolicited. I'm pretty laid back and would hate anyone trying to convert me to a more fervent form!

QueefQueen80s · 11/02/2023 10:16

It depends on the wearer. I am a bit gothic sometimes and wear crucifixes but not religious at all.

MyCreation · 11/02/2023 10:16

Depending on how your dressed and the style of the cross, I’d assume either a Christian or a Goth. Nobody should be making comments at work unless you are trying to convert them to your faith or talking about it constantly.

Stuffynosetime · 11/02/2023 10:19

Unless it was someone goth, wearing it ironically , I’d assume anyone else was deeply religious , so much so they had to wear a crucifix.

gogohmm · 11/02/2023 10:21

@BeatricePortinari unfortunately that's the prevailing attitude in some segments of society, unless you live their lifestyle you are weird!

My friend left her teaching job because of all the subtle any religion pro alcohol talk in the staff room, all staff activities based around getting drunk, organising a staff day out on Good Friday etc. they even wanted her to pay into a drinks kitty for the work do - it's meds not religion that prevents her drinking!

Seeline · 11/02/2023 10:24

An actual crucifix - Jesus on the cross - I would assume religious, probably catholic.
Just a cross, it would depend on the style. Plain and simple, religious; any bling, fashion statement.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 11/02/2023 10:25

A cross, no. A crucifix yes I would assume religion was in their lives. It wouldn’t alter anything for me though.

ArianahX · 11/02/2023 10:26

I sometimes wear an antique gold st. Therese Catholic medallion necklace but I'm not a Catholic - it was a late friend's necklace so means a lot to me.

Some of the more religious Christians at work wear crucifixes, no one judges them.
Some women at work wear hijabs.

ChungusBoi · 11/02/2023 10:27

I’d judge someone on how they behave, not what they were wearing.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 11/02/2023 10:29

It’s quite telling that a lot of people don’t seem to know the difference between a crucifix and a cross. I guess I only know because I went to catholic school and was very loosely raised a catholic.

redspottedmug · 11/02/2023 10:29

For clarity OP do you mean

A cross, which is the shape, and can be plain or decorative

Or

A crucifix, which by definition carries the image of Jesus on the cross?

redspottedmug · 11/02/2023 10:30

Oh, great minds!

BeatricePortinari · 11/02/2023 10:32

It's a cross.
No Jesus
Antique/old looking.

Darkdiamond · 11/02/2023 10:33

I wear a small silver Cross around my neck and I'm Christian. I don't talk about my faith unless it comes up naturally or I'm in a situation where I need to explain why I won't take part or do something due to my beliefs. I don't think others looking at me equate the two

Aside from people wearing heirlooms or items with sentimental value, I don't understand why people wear a crucifix. I mean, I wear it as a reminder that Jesus died for my sins on a cross but unless someone has an unusual interest in gruesome Roman methods of execution, I don't get it.

I hear a lot of passing, general antireligion sentiment and think we are generally an atheistic society. Christians are to expect this as its pretty clear in the Bible that we are a 'peculiar people'. However it's always worth remembering that freedom to practise one's religion is a human right enshrined by the UN and we are blessed enough to live in a society that doesn't persecute us for our faith (yet).

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 11/02/2023 10:33

I used to wear big colourful sort of diamanté crosses and also an old silver Victorian floral engraved cross when I was younger and though I was about 15/16 when I wore the silver one and was also at a convent school, I wasn’t particularly religious then and certainly wasn’t when I wore the colourful crosses I saw them as fashion statements.

I did used to go clubbing at Mass which was part of St Matthew’s church in Brixton when I wore the colourful crosses though!

Newusernameaug · 11/02/2023 10:33

I wouldn’t assume anything as I know many people wear them just because

NeverTooLateToSing · 11/02/2023 10:38

I’m with @Seeline :

Crucifix (has the crucified figure of Jesus on it) - I’d assume devout Christian, probably Roman Catholic.

Cross (no figure on it) - I’d think maybe Christian, or wearing a treasured heirloom.

Bling - fashion item.

And it wouldn’t bother me either way!
