Would you think someone wearing a crucifix at work was religious?

Or would you think it was just fashion jewellery, or maybe sentimental?

Would you care and would you judge them (good or bad) in any way?

I wear a crucifix, it has family links but I'm also a Christian.

At work there have been some passing derogatory comments about religion/ religious people.
I wonder whether my crucifix has been noticed and what they think it represents?

I would just assume they identified as Christian in the same way that I'd assume anyone wearing a cat brooch probably liked cats. Neither would bother me unless they were trying to convert me to their way of thinking.

Thingsthatgo · 11/02/2023 10:52

I would notice and try but probably fail to not blaspheme in front of them.

LadyJ2023 · 11/02/2023 10:53

If people see it and have a problem with it thats there problem. Be true to yourself. I wouldn't give it a thought either way everyone is entitled to there own beliefs, views and opinions 🙂🙂

I wore a cross for most of my teens because I was a Buffy the vampire slayer fan.

lookslikeabombhitit · 11/02/2023 10:58

I'd assume you were Christian and would accordingly make sure I didn't say anything that might offend. Same as I would if I saw any other symbols from other religions.

I'm an atheist, I tend to try and ignore religion and it's trappings but I certainly wouldn't sit there making derogatory remarks about it to people I suspected were religious.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 11/02/2023 10:59

I wear a cross as I’m a Christian of the Protestant tradition. If they were wearing a crucifix I’d assume they were Catholic. Nice to see either way.
If I did find out they were an atheist wearing it for fashion I would be privately offended but not make a fuss as ultimately it’s their right to wear what they like. It makes me deeply uncomfortable when people blaspheme but I don’t call that out either as it’s their choice.

WinterFoxes · 11/02/2023 10:59

I'd assume they were Christian, just as if they wore a Hand of Fatima I'd assume they were muslim. And I'd certainly not tolerate sneery remarks about faith.

DinosApple · 11/02/2023 11:00

Crucifix or cross most probably religious or for sentimental reasons, or perhaps, if obvious, goth. Chances are I genuinely wouldn't notice something small like jewellery, I'd notice religious clothing though.

I come from a huge RC maternal family, plus CofE and Jewish on the other side and married to an atheist.
People should be judged on behaviour, not beliefs.

DinosApple · 11/02/2023 11:06

Yes to crucifix - Catholic, cross - Catholic or protestant, bling probably fashion.

I remember wanting a very blingy cross for my first holy communion, my mum was horrified Grin. In the end I got a very tasteful silver cross which I still have.

lljkk · 11/02/2023 11:27

MNers as a group are oversensitive. What exactly was said that you take as derogatory against religious people? My colleagues say a lot of stuff I don't agree with, mostly I can disregard. There's a grey zone where there should be scope to criticise specific religious beliefs or practices without it being heard as "I dislike everyone in that religion."

writemynameinthesand · 11/02/2023 11:32

I wear one - my mum wore it until she became too unwell and nursing home handed it back to me, it was my great grandmother’s before it went to my mum . I’ve had it on six months now and can’t bear to take it off .

RC but I haven’t been to mass in years other than funerals, and most of my beliefs don’t fully align with the church - I just wear it because I find it comforting!

I've said I wasn't offended.

I've also said the type of thing being said in earlier posts.

I find some MNers often exaggerate jump to conclusions and don't read the thread.

No judgement from me, and wouldn’t cross my mind to think if you were religious or not

TenoringBehind · 11/02/2023 11:49

Unless the person wearing it was a goth, then I would assume deeply religious. I wouldn’t ever comment on it though.

ScienceDragon · 11/02/2023 11:49

I have a very large, ornate crucifix, set with sparkly blue stones, that I bought because I am a bit of a magpie and like sparkle. I didn't know it was goth! Perhaps wrong generation.

I also have a very pretty set of rosary beads, crystal, given to me for my confirmation (non prac. catholic). Sometimes I wear them back to front, so all you see are the beads, and not the crucifix at the end.

donquixotedelamancha · 11/02/2023 11:51

I think there's just more of an assumption that no one is religious. Like: who would would still go to church?? Or hating Christian music.

A dismissive attitude of it's all old fashioned nonsense.

So I'm not offended, it just made me think: there is an assumption here no one is religious (which is interesting in itself) but I wear a crucifix, so I wondered if they'd have noticed or thought about it.

I would imagine they know that some people are religious but don't feel the need to hide their baseline view that it's silly.

Lots of people wear crosses for decoration so I'm not surprised they didn't assume it meant you were a staunch Christian. I think if you did wear a crucifix it might be a bit different.

kitcat15 · 11/02/2023 11:52

I would definately think you were Christian if you wore a crucifix….if you wore a cross I wouldn’t think you were or weren’t

Giggorata · 11/02/2023 11:58

I worked with people who wore crosses, fish pendants, hands of Fatima, hijabs, stars of David, etc, and also wore my pentagram throughout my working life.

To me, it signified that they were of a certain religion, but not necessarily “religious”, inasmuch not going on about it.

This. I wouldn’t be concealing my general attitude towards religion in front of cross- or hijab- or turban-wearers.

CornedBeef451 · 11/02/2023 12:25

I wouldn't think much of it really.

Although I once met a nice, older lady in a church hall who wore a truly enormous, ornate crucifix and later found out she was a nun.

I just thought it was quite a bold choice with her otherwise bland outfit but never once considered the possibility it might be religious so I might not be the best judge.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/02/2023 12:28

I would assume Christian and very likely practicing / devout.

Rebellious23 · 11/02/2023 12:30

Calciferess · 11/02/2023 10:55

I wore a cross for most of my teens because I was a Buffy the vampire slayer fan.

I went one further and had one tattooed on me Grin

WandaWonder · 11/02/2023 12:31

I don't mind having a chat and going out with colleagues sometimes but no offence I wouldn't think much that deeply with what they wear including this

So I wouldn't think anything really

thatheavyperson · 11/02/2023 12:32

I wear a cross because it's just my every day piece of jewellery, and it was a gift from a religious family member.

I myself am quite generally spiritual, but would class myself as Christian given that I was christened, I've christened my child, I went to a C of E school, studied lots of biblical stuff at uni, I celebrate Christian holidays etc. I assign a sort of 'sacredness' to Christian symbols, and I'd never swear inside a church, so I suppose I have a lot of cultural Christian-ness going on.

I go to church from time to time, and I do believe in it somewhat. But I don't think anyone would describe me as particularly religious tbh.

I think people probably assume I am more religious than I am due to the necklace I wear, but I don't really care.

Suedomin · 11/02/2023 12:33

I'd think you were probably a Christian but to be honest I wouldn't give it much thought at all.
