Who still has lockdown stockpiled stuff to use up? Own up!

DD has just finished the huge box of glasses wipes which was bought on amazon near the start of lockdown. To be honest I accidentally bought a much bigger pack than I had intended to, but with all the crazy buying that was happening, who will admit to still having lockdown purchases that haven't been used yet, what are they, and when will you use them?

I stockpiled wine and chocolate. Only a couple of bottles left and a tiny bit of chocolate.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 09/02/2023 16:38

We didn't stockpile anything - it's such shitty, selfish behaviour.

We had elderly family and neighbours who struggled to find food because of people doing this - and unfortunately they weren't healthy enough to travel around different supermarkets just to get the basics.

AdoraBell · 09/02/2023 16:39

No food stockpiled, or loo rolls. I do keep a stash in case something goes wrong but that’s built up slowly, 1 extra packet/tin per week.

We still have a 5 litre bottle of hand sanitiser, that was the only size I could find on Amazon. and some masks.

I think the other question should be: who is still washing their groceries and quarantining their post!

My friend's husband. Annoys me as much as it does her, he leaves all the packages of food out in the kitchen and wipes them over before putting them in the fridge. Unfortunately he wants to leave them there for 24 hours. I say that's a health hazard for chilled food.

ChevreChase · 09/02/2023 16:39

I didn't stockpile, but bought a few random things as others appear to have done - I have a now out-of-date packet of pudding rice, in case I felt the need to make rice pudding (which I possibly last cooked in about 1991).

MonkeyMindAllOverAround · 09/02/2023 16:42

Does out of date stock counts? If so… yes.

I bought that kind of stuff I wouldn’t be tempted to eat unless there was the actual need. Can’t be trusted with yummy stuff around 🤣

Giving some of you lot the hard eye. (Somewhat lightheartedly but not entirely.) Those early weeks of lockdown were made infinitely harder when panic-buying meant we couldn’t get basic stuff.

Ironically, the large quantity of flour I’ve just finished working my way through was acquired because of others’ stockpiling rather than my own - everywhere was permanently out of stock locally so I resorted to going online. The supplier (who I usually shop with for more hard-to-come-by baking items) offers a much better deal on a large sack than a supermarket sized package. It was good quality too, I’m tempted to get it again.

MonkeyMindAllOverAround · 09/02/2023 16:45

BTW, I was not stockpiling when people started panicking and goods became scarce.

I started stockpiling little by little since the news of a pandemic came around Christmas and stopped when people started panicking about toilet paper, when it was clear we were going into lockdown.

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/02/2023 16:50

We have masks because we wear them in supermarkets and crowded places. We have some tests as well.

We didn’t stockpile food and nearly came unstuck, because we weren’t allowed to go to the supermarket and it was very difficult to get a delivery, even as a priority. We did have a couple of food parcels delivered and I donated to the Trussell Trust and gave anything we wouldn’t have eaten to the food bank.

We usually have a few extra tins of things like beans and tomatoes in the cupboard and maybe oil and pasta.

ThighMistress · 09/02/2023 16:51

I’ll own up; I bought my first loo rolls today since 2020 😂

In my defence I do have a medical issue and my worst nightmare is running out - I’d rather have no food!

PrincessOfWaiIs · 09/02/2023 16:51

I didn't stockpile, but I did have to buy things I wouldn't normally buy because my usual stuff was out of stock everywhere. Hence, the other day I found three punnets of pre-cooked basmati rice, a massive bag of bulgar wheat and some tinned green beans in the back of my cupboard.

I've also got loads of hand gel. I'm immunocompromised so admit to stockpiling that a little, inasmuch as I couldn't find any for weeks so bought loads when I did. Now things are back to normal I do what I always did previously and wash my hands when I'm out and about - that wasn't possible during the pandemic proper because everywhere was closed.

RedToothBrush · 09/02/2023 16:52

I didn't stockpile for the pandemic. I'd stocked up on most things ahead of Brexit and got into the habit of bulk buying and making sure the cupboards were rammed.

Since the summer, I've rewound on that and going through clearing down what we have in the cupboards so we have a lot less. In part to keep our costs down. In other words, having more in has helped us keep our house bills down at a time when heating it has cost us more.

Tbh I think having more in to cover shortages has worked, but now I think we are in a different phase.

We long since used the huge bags of flour we bought during lockdown. We bought more. And are due to get another bag soon. That I wouldn't change because of the cost for 1.5kg bags...

gogohmm · 09/02/2023 16:54

Still cost dried beans, I'm too lazy to soak them

WiIson · 09/02/2023 16:58

I stockpiled for brexit not covid. Fortunately as it turned out. I didn't need to go and compete for bog roll in the packed shops. I still have tinned fruit.

MavisFlump · 09/02/2023 16:59

I didn’t stockpile because it was obvious what would happen. Supermarkets round here looked as if they’d been raided by locusts ☹️
There would have been adequate supplies for everyone if greed hadn’t set in.
I always have a well stocked freezer and cupboard so absolutely no need to do so. I had a priority slot for online deliveries and did just fine (I also shopped for several elderly neighbours who couldn’t go from shop shop looking for the basics)

CoffeeWithCheese · 09/02/2023 16:59

Wasn't panic bought - was given to me when I was doing placements during the pandemic but I still have fucking shitloads of random PPE in my car boot. The magical aprons that were fucking useless, gloves, finally gone through the masks now. I only needed a couple of weeks' visits worth and they chucked mountains of it my way! This was the period after the PPE shortages but when we were still going anywhere fully trussed up in aprons, visors, gloves and fuck knows what else.

bluechameleon · 09/02/2023 17:01

We are still working our way through the ready mixed paint and PVA glue. Everywhere had sold out of the sensibly-sized bottles so I bought 5L ones. Turns out it takes 2 children quite a while to get through 5L of glue and 25L of paint...

Oopswediditagain2023 · 09/02/2023 17:03

We didn't stockpile but we did buy some "make your own bread" mix from Amazon I think that we've only used half the bag of! It did make tasty mini loaves that we ate in lockdown, but I hate baking so haven't used it since 🤣

MarshaMelrose · 09/02/2023 17:04

We were sensible and stopped stocking up when stores started to have a better availability of items

Do you think that that's maybe because people stopped stock-piling?

Radiohorror · 09/02/2023 17:06

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 09/02/2023 16:24

Donate them to a food bank or charity shop. Some really struggle with having bags to send food parcels out in.

Thanks @FatAgainItsLettuceTime I'll do that.

Radiohorror · 09/02/2023 17:06

As we have loads too

thenightsky · 09/02/2023 17:08

2 and half boxes of tests. DH didn't realise there were 7 in each box so he picked up 3 boxes. We only ever used 4 tests and I suspect the rest are past usable now. I should bin them as I get cross every time I open that cupboard and the fall on my head.

😂😂😂

I finished my 5 litres of hand gel a few months ago. Still have a kilo of baking powder though, use it for cleaning now.

Unescorted · 09/02/2023 17:09

@Cookerhood put the carrier bags in your local foodbank collection point.

HelloTreacle9 · 09/02/2023 17:10

Didn’t stockpile but did succumb and buy a B&Q hot tub that we used loads and now can’t afford to heat…
