Just took my neighbour to local Asda for a monthly big food shop...wow...she spent about 35% more on the same items compared to last month as she keeps the receipts....some examples of the increases:
sugar up 40p
coffee up 50p
burgers up 47p
crisps up 38p
lentils up 34p

I have noticed that Asda and Lidl seem to be the worst offenders by chucking an extra 40 or 50p onto an item....not even a slow gradual increase...it's bonkers..luckily we are vegan so our bill is lower

£6 for a chicken? That IS cheap. Probably one of those deformed things that can’t walk.

A quality bird is £20 at least and so it should be. Meat will become one of the most expensive food items you can buy (as it should be).

People eat far too much anyway.

£20 for a chicken? Are you off your nut?

babybunny123 · 09/02/2023 12:06

I could not believe how much dearer ALDI is, fin toil almost double the price and also kitchen roll. Will now do without non essentials.

Dwellingbuyingdilemma · 09/02/2023 12:13

It's probably felt more at Asda and Lidl because they're budget supermarkets. I've swapped from Asda to Sainsbury's because for the same price I get a far great selection and better quality produce

I can't believe some of the responses on here ! £20 for a chicken ! ALDI dearer! Dearer than who @babybunny123?

Tirednest · 09/02/2023 12:26

I only buy chicken from my butchers - it's delicious, local and free range. It's around 12. 20 seems excessive!

stbrandonsboat · 09/02/2023 12:34

We went to Morrisons yesterday and could hardly afford anything. We usually go to Lidl, but fancied a change. Couldn't afford any meat for ds apart from some minced beef and a steak pie. He needs more iron, but it's cheaper just to buy supplements. He won't eat enough iron rich vegetables, so I don't push those.

I've more or less gone vegan because I can't afford meat or cheese anymore. Even the veggie foods are getting expensive though. Gonna be living on turnips and bread rolls soon 😬

ASDA gluten free pasta and lactose free milk seem reasonable

Gluten free pasta is the cheapest on the market and I pray they don't rise the prices. It went up a lot anyway, but still cheap comparing to other shops.

1960s my mum said chicken was a luxury. It was skirt beef, belly of pork, mutton, streaky or middle bacon. Offal, faggots. Weirdly all the foods top chefs go wild for today

justasking111 · 09/02/2023 12:51

Yesterday OH birthday I had feather of beef bourgignon at a restaurant. Poor man's food once. It was amazing

sosickoffeelingsick · 09/02/2023 12:52

I've definitely found Asda to have gone up more than others. I used to avoid Tesco due to prices but it seems better value than the others now.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 09/02/2023 12:56

Let's face it, crisis or not they all make massive profits.. that's why ALDI and Lidl have become so popular.
I am no economist nor am I a politician but couldn't supermarkets be made to lower their prices knowing what they know about the way people are struggling to live? Given the millions they make??
I hear shoplifting is pretty common practice these days so it's a 'cause and effect' market we are looking at here

justasking111 · 09/02/2023 13:00

Cooking the basics from scratch will be cheaper for some things. However it got to the point where two things were cheaper ready made. Bakery cakes and biscuits. AND curtains, clothing. Maybe it's time to dig out my sewing machine

Tirednest · 09/02/2023 13:01

I'm lucky to be able to afford to shop in independent butchers and greengrocers but I'm so sick of the supermarkets making such a lot of money out of us,plus the quality of meat is so poor, I've started buying meat from a butchers and veg from a greengrocers. The minced beef is expensive but so much nicer and tastes more nutritious, no stringy grey strands.

You know it's bad when a post that starts 'in brighter news' goes on to mention a bereavement group!

Well to be fair I should have said the different pub hes going to where the group meet. I don’t think it’s a different rate for the bereaved!

You must know prices have gone up in all shops? Though you managed to tell some people you're a vegan so worth posting 😀

😂😂

Isn’t that a vegan’s raison d’être?

GoodChat · 09/02/2023 13:37

For god sake @ferneytorro - I feel like it's inappropriate to laugh!

All I'm hearing is that dust and dust are cheap

Sartre · 09/02/2023 13:42

I think it’s the same in all supermarkets. We largely get the same sort of things in our weekly aldi shop as we always have and it now costs on average £130, it was £100 a few months ago.

justasking111 · 09/02/2023 13:50

Online shoppers I believe there's a minimum shop. So they've gotcha.

Maybe compare them virtual shopping basket wise before committing.

The online shopping habits, they've really got you by the short hairs unless you're smart.

BritishDesiGirl · 09/02/2023 14:09

Morrisons prices are getting so high, it honestly feels that they are taking advantage.

They've gone to shite ever since they were bought out

FartSock5000 · 09/02/2023 14:23

My Shop from Asda is up £20 compared to 3 weeks ago. Same items.

Lidl I am about the same.

xogossipgirlxo · 09/02/2023 14:29

So who's cheaper now? When I look at the comparison sites, it always seems like supermarkets compete by pennies. I always find that one item is cheaper in Asda than Tesco, then other is cheaper in Tesco than Asda and basically you're even, but maybe I'm missing something? Asda is the closest one to me (with Lidl). I could eventually go to Sainsburys, but Tesco is 13 miles away, so I think I will pay the difference in burning more petrol...
