ASDA - now your are taking the p**s....prices

Just took my neighbour to local Asda for a monthly big food shop...wow...she spent about 35% more on the same items compared to last month as she keeps the receipts....some examples of the increases:
sugar up 40p
coffee up 50p
burgers up 47p
crisps up 38p
lentils up 34p

I have noticed that Asda and Lidl seem to be the worst offenders by chucking an extra 40 or 50p onto an item....not even a slow gradual increase...it's bonkers..luckily we are vegan so our bill is lower

I might try hitting the pheasants on the way to work rather than avoiding them when they do their suicidal flight in front of the car.

I read that initially as "peasants"...

ETref · 08/02/2023 23:45

I rarely shop in Asda as I've had a few crappy own brand items before plus the only one in my city is one of the roughest places you can go because of it's location, I only set foot in there if I absolutely have to.

In the last year I've been in there probably 2 or 3 times and have been shocked at how extortionate it is. I don't know whether it's just the particular things we buy or if it is expensive generally but there's no way I could afford to shop there regularly. I mainly shop in aldi and Sainsburys and while the prices have obviously gone up, it's no where near as bad as Asda imo.

UK food inflation currently 16.8 percent

”Euro Area” countries in G20 average is currently 16

EU member states average is currently 17.82

I think it's also due to their rewards scheme as well so you need to shop their star products as well as offers. It's a nightmare.

TwoMonthsOff · 08/02/2023 23:51

@earsup
sorry you are getting a lot of stick about being vegan OP - not sure why ?

JohnnyYenSetHimselfOnFireAgain · 09/02/2023 00:01

I'm not sure about other items but Asda's own brand fat free yogurt has gone up a massive 70% over the last 12 months. It's ridiculous.

mushroom3 · 09/02/2023 00:04

Brexit is a huge factor. Many EU countries are seeing their food prices fall in recent weeks

MotherOfPuffling · 09/02/2023 00:06

@OutDamnedSpot I’ve found Sainsbury’s the best for precooked rice, it’s still 50p a pack even without offers!

I generally use Sainsbury’s every few months to stock up on rice and pasta, but Ocado for the weekly shop as they are cheapest on my usual shopping other than the aforementioned rice and pasta. Which feels crazy.

The figures are all here.

If BREXIT is a huge factor, why is Germany sat at 20 percent?

Coop is ridiculous and is the only supermarket in our village so a lot of elderly rely on it. Today they were asking £2 for a ( large) packet of Jacobs cream crackers and £2 for a packet of McVities digestives. there was barely one pack of biscuits under £1.50.

Their 9 roll quilted cushelle toilet paper is £5.50. Morrison’s wanted £7.50 😳

Myfluffyblanket · 09/02/2023 00:51

Regarding roadkill ...if you accidentally kill a pheasant you are not allowed to pick it up and take it home to eat ; this would be considered to be poaching I believe . However , if you find one already hit by another car then that is fair game .
(My DC and I used to be very , very poor so ate quite a lot of things not purchased in a shop)

Coca cola has gone from £9 to £14 in Asda!

I hardly ever drink coke but what does £14 buy you these days? Cans bottles etc. this sounds like the beginning of a drug deal. What can I get for £14?

Just one of the many wonderful Brexit Benefits don’t ya know. Boris says it’s saving lives.

He's earned £5m since he was booted out of office. Doubt he's stressed about his shopping bill, so he doesn't care.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/02/2023 02:37

Op I am vegan too, but I found the jesting humorous. Agree with everyone else COL is across the board, more noticeable in some places than others. I use Asda a lot and absolutely love their new rewards app.

I also love ethnic shops but any bargains I get on bulk items are offset by the international luxury treats I find- think raw kimchi, organic miso, mochi, halva etc. Yum.

I am trying to cook more frugally though- potatoes & lentils etc.

PatsysBeehive · 09/02/2023 05:21

I shop online aswell from asda as we only have a co-op in our town. A big one and a small one. Their own brand salted butter is more expensive than Mark's and Spencer's.
I think some of the asda essentials range is good though, the pasta and garlic bread etc.

Fedupofdiets · 09/02/2023 05:30

I am a loyal Tesco shopper but I was very pissed off to see my fave lasagna which has been £3.25 for a while now has gone up to £4 this week. I still bought it but its not just a few pence is it? It is every week that some staple rises and I do wonder how much more we ban keep going up and up - will it ever stop?

SO224350 · 08/02/2023 22:21

You must know prices have gone up in all shops? Though you managed to tell some people you're a vegan so worth posting 😀

FFS 🤣sensitive flower. ^

No wonder your getting so much vitriol OP.

MN hates vegans. How dare you not want to eat meat. Let’s make it all about that because we’re very triggered by what people put in their mouths on MN.

Vegan diets ARE cheaper- deal with it and go and cry in the corner. 🤣

You aren’t wrong though OP- they’ve all gone up. People will suffer and will need to eat less luxury items as a result.

uggmum · 09/02/2023 06:04

I am shocked by the rice increase of Heinz products. They have rocketed.

£1.70 for a tin of beans or soup. I have switched to shops own brand at 43p (Sainsbury's).

Another poster says pre cooked rice has gone up to £1. In M&S it's 60p.
So it's worth shopping around.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/02/2023 06:08

My husband had to do a trawl of supermarkets the other day because he couldn’t find the regular cat food (the only one they’ll eat 🙄) anywhere. He said “I thought Asda was supposed to be one of the cheaper ones, it’s pricier than Sainsbury’s.”
We do the bulk of our shopping in Aldi, which doesn’t seem as bad as others.

Some unpleasant vegan jokes etc....i am vegan and dh is mostly vegan...we rarely use large supermarkets and grow a lot of items also....we tend to shop at the large turkish supermarket and buy large amounts so havent been affected by price rises for a while.....

Hat trick 😁

MrsDoyle351 · 09/02/2023 06:14

Ponderingwindow · 08/02/2023 23:29

Well, the supermarket could increment the prices more slowly. That would mean printing more price tags and paying more workers to put up those price tags. So instead of raising something once by 40p they could raise it by 10p, 4 times. That would mean 4 times the materials and 4 times the labor though, so they might actually need to increase it by 50p instead.

Grin Grin

Interesting theory - but somehow - I don't think it's quite like that. I could well be wrong obvs. Maybe an Asda manager could come and tell us?

Agreed OP - a lot of stupid remarks about vegans (I'm not even a vegetarian here but don't mind if people mention that they eat different foods Confused ) as you certainly weren't 'boasting about it. I took the thread to be a chatty one - not a catty one...

plumduck · 09/02/2023 06:15

Maybe they'd kept the prices as low as they could for so long but now they've had to put it up so it looks like a big jump but others might have put it up 5p at a time.

stayathomer · 09/02/2023 06:17

Definitely not in Ireland, here charities are asking to meet with the government to discuss intervening

M&S is walking distance for me so I tend to shop there most. Butter is £1.40 in M&S, £2.20 in Tesco. I find most of their basics are cheaper than the supermarkets that promote themselves as being value.

flowerycurtain · 09/02/2023 06:33

It's not all to do with Brexit. Farmer here. The bread that you are buying at the moment:
The fertiliser to grow it went from £200 a ton to £900 a ton.
The electric to dry the grain went up from around 22ppkwh to 60pkwh
The Labour for the farm staff has gone up 10%
The council tax, water etc for said staff in tied accommodation has gone up by an average of 8%
Chemicals to grow the crop are running at 12% inflation.

Some of the machinery inflation you could put down to Brexit to be fair.

The wheat you're eating now was purchased at £300 a ton rather than £200 it was in 21.

The eggs you buy - 80% of a poultry farmers cost is feed. That's gone up by a third. Labour, electric, medicines all gone up.

Mostly to do with the war I'd say.

Wheat is back down to £220 but inputs remain high so lots of farmers can't cash flow a crop. Lots of poultry producers can't afford to re stock sheds hence the shortages you see in the shops.

Not saying this is ok but clearly there is way more to it than Brexit.
