ASDA - now your are taking the p**s....prices

Just took my neighbour to local Asda for a monthly big food shop...wow...she spent about 35% more on the same items compared to last month as she keeps the receipts....some examples of the increases:
sugar up 40p
coffee up 50p
burgers up 47p
crisps up 38p
lentils up 34p

I have noticed that Asda and Lidl seem to be the worst offenders by chucking an extra 40 or 50p onto an item....not even a slow gradual increase...it's bonkers..luckily we are vegan so our bill is lower

Posters are mistaken. The cheaper supermarkets have seen higher percentage increases and the own brand and budget items have again seen higher percentage increases than average.

I agree re asda, go regularly as only couple of minutes away so I walk to do most of my shopping. This week my coffee pods went from £2 to £2.60 and a sauce my son has regularly which a few months ago was £1 was £2.75😦 that's way more than inflation, someone is profiteering! I did wonder if they are trying to recoup what they are giving away on their new app, although I haven't got it as phone too old but I believe it takes 10% off🤷

The app puts 10% into a voucher pot for items marked with a star. Not 10% of the total value, just of some items.

Asda have increased their prices to compensate for this. Just throw a few items into Tesco website to compare, for example, Heinz Snappot beans have always been £2.50 at Tesco, Asda and Aldi, they are now £3.50 at Asda. Since the Issa brothers bought Asda and Rewards were introduced they have rocketed their prices.

As my Grandad would have said, at least Dick Turpin wore a mask!

Doveyouknow · 08/02/2023 22:59

Cheaper supermarkets have smaller margins on their items than more expensive supermarkets so less room to absorb the increases in costs. That means you are likely to see steeper price rises.

Met Dh after work and did the shopping tonight and he has spoken about nothing else- I don’t know if it’s up on last week but my god- big signs advertising two boxes of waffles for eight euro and a large tub of flora for six euro like it was a good thing? Take down those bloody better value signs- it’s all lies now. Officially can’t afford yoghurts, orange juice or any nice bread anymore

Rising food costs are global.

I don't live in the UK and was just about to say the same thing.

maddy68 · 08/02/2023 23:07

I came back to the UK a couple of weeks ago and was staggered at how expensive everything now is.

It's not the same in other courses. Don't accept your government's lies

He got an intro offer in for Ocado last week, already had an online basket priced up for Asda so built the Ocado one like-for-like (thrilling Saturday night activity that was). Didn't add anything that wasn't in the original Asda one, same size products etc, even ignores the m&s food offers in the name of research.

Got £15 off Ocado with the offer. but even before the discount it was still £2 cheaper than Asda! Frigging ridiculous!

And when Nigel turned up in his Plum van to deliver it, that just topped the experience off, he was epic

(I have a very angry, poorly baby - it's not fun here right now... little things like lovely Nigel and his plums mean a lot 😂)

People also ask
Why are UK food prices so high?
Is Brexit to blame for inflation?
Brexit is partly to blame for historically high inflation in the UK by causing labor shortages, strengthening pricing pressure among firms and weakening the economy, Bank of England chief economist Huw Pill said.30 Nov 2022

OutDamnedSpot · 08/02/2023 23:12

I’m finding this harder and harder. Precooked rice is a staple in our house and it’s gone from 3 for £1 last year to £1 each this. Cream cheese 79p to nearly £2. Smoked salmon trimmings £1.70 to £2.50. These are the ones I can remember. It’s so depressing.

Onnabugeisha · 08/02/2023 23:12

Just one of the many wonderful Brexit Benefits don’t ya know. Boris says it’s saving lives.

Are Nigel's plums a euphemism??? 😀

Dartmoorcheffy · 08/02/2023 23:16

Four out of the five items you mentioned are vegan. Don't worry, vegans aren't being left out with the increases. 🤣

earsup · 08/02/2023 23:16

Some unpleasant vegan jokes etc....i am vegan and dh is mostly vegan...we rarely use large supermarkets and grow a lot of items also....we tend to shop at the large turkish supermarket and buy large amounts so havent been affected by price rises for a while.....

Should Spain, Italy and France all be blaming the Conservative government and Brexit as well ? 🙄

Its a global issue

Except our inflation rate is 125% of theirs….it’s a Brexit Bonus

Ponderingwindow · 08/02/2023 23:29

Well, the supermarket could increment the prices more slowly. That would mean printing more price tags and paying more workers to put up those price tags. So instead of raising something once by 40p they could raise it by 10p, 4 times. That would mean 4 times the materials and 4 times the labor though, so they might actually need to increase it by 50p instead.

ifoundthebread · 08/02/2023 23:31

I will say with my experience of asda lately, due to staff shortages the shelf edge prices are not being updated when they should be. Resulting in items showing as less on the shelf and scanning at a higher price. Make sure to get a scan and go gun when you go in and check everything, if its cheaper on the shelf tell them at the end and they will correct it to the shelf price. I got over £5 taken off my shopping last week by disputing the prices.

Babyroobs · 08/02/2023 23:32

Coop is ridiculous and is the only supermarket in our village so a lot of elderly rely on it. Today they were asking £2 for a ( large) packet of Jacobs cream crackers and £2 for a packet of McVities digestives. there was barely one pack of biscuits under £1.50.

Honestly. I flit between spain and France. It's no where near the UK level definitely a brexit bonus

Seasider2017 · 08/02/2023 23:36

I look on trolley to see where certain things are cheaper, I know everyone can’t get to different shops for one reason or another. I’m retired so can thankfully
you can save save upto £1 75p on each item, it’s disgusting

the other week I noticed
the small bisto granules that was £1 a but back in pound shops then went to £1.25
in Asda was £3 OMG

we’re getting ripped off, there all in the bandwagon.
first it was because of the lorry drivers
never mentioned now !!!

Spanish food inflation December 2022 over 15 percent.

France 13.2 percent in January 23.

Italy 13 percent in November.

Poland 22 percent in November

New Zealand 11 percent

Portugal 19 percent.

Brexit hasn’t helped, but to blame our government or Brexit for food inflation in the current global economic climate is just silly.
