What do you think of this amount of alcohol?

Two bottles of 11% wine every Sunday night. Starting at around 5pm, finishing around midnight. Total of 16 units. No alcohol consumed throughout the rest of the week.

I’d be fucked and face down! My liver would be in shock until Thursday. I think it’s a bender and I can’t believe it won’t have some impact on life.

It's so individual. I hadn't had any alcohol for a good 2 years (I don't drink at home)
Went on the works do and had 2 bottles of wine, Prosecco, 6 tequila shots and some cocktails. Was drunk but still standing
Although the hangover... EnvyEnvyEnvy

Leemoe · 08/02/2023 22:08

Fine. Knock yourself out.

You obviously do this to unwind once a week.
Yes its a binge but you're giving your liver six free days a week to recover and you're drinking a relatively low strength wine.

I think it's a lot of units for anyone and it doesn't sound like a healthy relationship with alcohol to me, especially given how much of it is drinking alone rather than as part of a social occasion with friends.

Honestly OP given you say you have a history of depression, that you used to drink a lot more alcohol, and that this is a habit to unwind where you prefer to be alone with the alcohol than drink it socially with friends, it sounds like you might benefit from talking to someone about it.

If you're asking here you must have some suspicion that it's not healthy

Why does drinking alcohol alone, worse than being social. It's my fave drink tbh. Wind down and watch tv and feel chilled.
It's once a week OP, nothing to get worried about. I would probably drink one on Saturday and one on Sunday as 2 would leave me feeling floored.

Tbh 1 leaves me feeling floored, but I tend to half half a bottle 3 times a week instead

I never understand the ‘not drinking alone thing’. Why ever not? Drinking to forget, or drinking to blot out life, no. Drinking I my own house on my sofa, alone, yes!

Yes- you've articulated it much better than me. I actually prefer it. And would rather a coffee when out!

buckeejit · 08/02/2023 22:19

Fine, I drink way more but that's not healthy. I'd say your units are below average, although you have them all in one night

AllOfThemWitches · 08/02/2023 22:24

I'd be hammered and expecting a nasty hangover but I don't think you have a massive problem, based on that.

Minteraye · 08/02/2023 22:26

I literally don’t know how anyone could manage that. I’d be fucked for about a week afterwards. Just…. why??

I think a whole bottle to yourself is excessive but can see how it could happen once in a while. But two???? (And I used to pretty much drink a bottle of wine every evening and had a v high tolerance, but really really rarely this much in one sitting, and would have been wasted). Are you quite big built?

I'd literally be in hospital on that amount! 😦

Inextremis · 08/02/2023 22:27

It's probably not very good for you, but I've done it many times - not so much since I hit my 60s 'cos my tolerance has gone down. I take weeks off drinking at a time, but now and again I'll just feel like a bit of a blast of a night, and can easily get through 2 bottles in an evening, though I do regret it a bit the following day. Then again, I can go months without thinking about a drink. I like interesting wines, rather than yer average sauvignon blanc, and I really enjoy them and try to match them with food (mostly cheese!). It's a pleasure, an indulgence, and a bit of fun for me, can't be considering the health aspects all the time!

mathanxiety · 08/02/2023 22:31

It's binge drinking and the drinker has a problem.

DragonsFurry · 08/02/2023 22:36

Two bottles is way too much for one person.

jacult · 08/02/2023 22:38

Don’t see an issue really. Some people like to eat a massive chocolate bar in one sitting, some would like to have a few squares every night. Some like to eat all their food between certain hours of the day, some like little snacks and often. Doesn’t sound like you’re affecting anyone else apart from you. So just do what you like.

Jadviga · 08/02/2023 22:46

As others have said context matters. If the drinking doesn't negatively impact others, isn't an unhealthy coping mechanism and isn't negatively impacting your health at this point, I wouldn't be concerned. I mean, it'd probably be better for your health to reduce and spread it out a bit more over the week, but life is short.

That said I personally couldn't stomach that much alcohol in one sitting, even spread over a few hours. I prefer to drink less but more often. To each their own.

If there is one thing I do think (sample size my friends over the year as would probably be circa 100 so not a small sample), weight:height has nothing to do with it!! The biggest person (South African 2.3m over 190kg) could be drunk on half a shandy. The person with the highest tolerance was 1.6m and 45kg. There was definitely no clue to who could tolerate drink based on their stature. Depends how efficiently your body can process it. I can tolerate a lot more than my husband and not feel the effects as much and he’s 5x the size of me.

SwordToFlamethrower · 08/02/2023 22:49

I'd be paralytic and throwing up on 2 bottles to myself. This is deffo binge drinking

fuchsteufelswild · 08/02/2023 22:50

When you're asking if it's too much, it is too much.

Wolfiefan · 08/02/2023 22:54

Far too much in one go. And if you’re using it “to take the edge off” then that’s unhealthy too. You need better coping mechanisms.
The fact you used to drink even more doesn’t make this unhealthy habit OK.

JessicaFletcherscrewnecksweater · 08/02/2023 22:54

I’d feel really shit after that, but I don’t drink much these days. I cannot bear feeling unwell from self-administered overconsumption.

fellrunner85 · 08/02/2023 22:55

Two bottles of wine in one sitting is a huge amount of alcohol for one person. I can't quite believe some posters are normalising it.

You know it's binge drinking and problematic, OP. Otherwise you wouldn't have asked.

I’m just trying to find a logic behind it… like I say, I used to drink a lot (more than most people I knew at the time, plenty of whom were big drinkers) and had a high tolerance, but this would have been a lot to drink alone in an evening.

I assume most of the difference is down to having built tolerance as your body starts to counterbalance the effects.

But once a week seems infrequent enough that you’d properly feel the effects. I don’t know. Either way I think it’s really bad for you and way too much for one person in one sitting on a regular basis. 🤷🏻 IMO

Same I can’t believe either how many people are saying it seems fine!

maddy68 · 08/02/2023 23:08

It wouldn't overly worry me

WedonttalkaboutMaureen · 08/02/2023 23:43

I agree with fallrunner, it's a binge and a problem. It's over your weekly units in one sitting. That's not good or normal, despite the middle class wine o'clock culture on here.

Can you try to cut down to one bottle? If you can't then you need to think about getting some help.

Coolblur · 09/02/2023 00:15

How would you feel about not drinking this Sunday? Could you do it? That will tell you all you need to know about your drinking habit
