What do you think of this amount of alcohol?

Two bottles of 11% wine every Sunday night. Starting at around 5pm, finishing around midnight. Total of 16 units. No alcohol consumed throughout the rest of the week.

OP posts:

7 hours of very slow drinking, and not even 14%. Meh.

sacremerde · 08/02/2023 21:08

To me, that sounds like alcoholism as it's such a huge amount albeit once a week. I almost didn't write that as I didn't want to offend you but I guess you're asking here for honest responses that might make you question your choices. That said, I'm not a medical professional and have no idea!

I'd ask your doctor. I mean that genuinely. This is an important medical question.

If you don't want to ask then I suppose that tells you something too.

Lcb123 · 08/02/2023 21:10

I think it’s better to spread over a few days rather than binge

Berlin86 · 08/02/2023 21:10

You're worried about 2 bottles of wine in one sitting! Enjoy life. Life is to be enjoyed.
From my understanding is the body can detox itself so eat what they say helps the liver but even then look around you. A lot of people have a couple of glasses most nights It's a good way to relax.
For those saying they wouldn't or judge negatively are probably equally as unhealthy in other ways.

LolaSmiles · 08/02/2023 21:14

I think it's a lot of units for anyone and it doesn't sound like a healthy relationship with alcohol to me, especially given how much of it is drinking alone rather than as part of a social occasion with friends.

Honestly OP given you say you have a history of depression, that you used to drink a lot more alcohol, and that this is a habit to unwind where you prefer to be alone with the alcohol than drink it socially with friends, it sounds like you might benefit from talking to someone about it.

If you're asking here you must have some suspicion that it's not healthy

Sunsetintheeast · 08/02/2023 21:19

I never understand the ‘not drinking alone thing’. Why ever not? Drinking to forget, or drinking to blot out life, no. Drinking I my own house on my sofa, alone, yes!

Blagdoon · 08/02/2023 21:23

That’s a binge and it’s not healthy. Surprised you don’t have a terrible hangover the following day! Apart from affecting your liver it’ll also make you gain loads of weight.

Teeshirt · 08/02/2023 21:27

Yes, it’s far too much, and at one sitting. I would be concerned.

leithreas · 08/02/2023 21:27

I would be blotto drinking that so wouldn't find it very relaxing and would be hanging for days afterwards. So I personally wouldn't drink all of that but I don't think it is a massive amount in the grand scale of things.

Enjoying a glass of wine or two to yourself on an evening is very different to drinking a couple of bottles of wine on your own most weekend evenings and preferring it when your friends aren't there though.

Sparkletastic · 08/02/2023 21:29

I agree with reducing it to one bottle. One good bottle that you savour.

DillDanding · 08/02/2023 21:30

Two bottles of wine by yourself? That’s a lot.

I don’t think it’s an issue health wise if it’s once a week. But, I’d feel like shite if I drank that much in one go.

Sparkleshine21 · 08/02/2023 21:34

I would limit myself to one bottle of wine per week tbh.

Deathbyfluffy · 08/02/2023 21:34

Sounds fine to me - I wouldn’t be too worried.

Suzi888 · 08/02/2023 21:35

It’s not great but I don’t think it’s that bad. What about a spritzer?

Euchariahere · 08/02/2023 21:35

Literally no big deal as its once a week.

QueSyrahSyrah · 08/02/2023 21:38

I wouldn't be especially proud of myself, but nor would I be incapable for the rest of the week. I was out at the weekend and between two of us we certainly put away 4 bottles of wine minimum, but over nearly 9 hours and with several jugs of water alongside.

Somehow 1 bottle twice a week feels like it would be 'better' to me, but I can't put a finger on why exactly.

IwasToldThereWouldBeCake · 08/02/2023 21:42

I think it's OK..... But just on the brink.

2 bottles for 1 person is quite a lot..... But it s over a long time with option to sleep in and take it easy the following day. Just once a week, I think the body can cope.

I ld be asleep after 5 glasses..... Wouldn't manage any more. Especially at home, where its easy to snooze in peace.

Teeshirt · 08/02/2023 21:43

I think the fact that you say you only feel a bit fuzzy is concerning. I would be incapacitated after drinking that much - I probably actually couldn’t drink that much. I think it shows you have built up a tolerance, which isn’t great.

TheDuchessOfMN · 08/02/2023 21:44

This is probably terrible advice, but I’d drink one on the Saturday night and one on the Sunday night.
That’s just barely over your recommended weekly allowance.

Ohhhhhlalala · 08/02/2023 21:45

I think it’s fine .
Obviously you may not be on top form on Monday and don’t drive to work !!! But two bottles of wine on a Sunday night - it’s fine!

I miss these days. Have children now.
If you abstain in the week - that’s no issue to me !

JoanThursday · 08/02/2023 21:52

I have terrible hangovers on just half a bottle, so there is no way I could drink two bottles. I'd also be very hammered which I don't particularly enjoy.

But then I'm going more and more down the non-alcoholic options route, so definitely not best-placed to answer!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 08/02/2023 21:53

Meh. I wouldn't, because I couldn't, but it wouldn't concern me if you were my friend.

Justleaveitblankthen · 08/02/2023 22:04

I would be horrendously because the room would be spinning when I go to bed.
How do you feel? Just abit drunk only?
Can I ask if you feel it has altered your appearance at all? Puffy face? Weight gain etc?
I can't remember if you mentioned your age 🤔

Justleaveitblankthen · 08/02/2023 22:05

horrendously ill
