Is this a normal blood sugar level reading?

OldTrot · 07/02/2023 17:19

6.2 mmol

Taken at 5pm, after eating a Turkish delight at 3.30pm and a nectarine and a chocolate mousse dessert at 4pm

Thanks in advance

It is best to wait for one and a half to two hours after the first mouthful of food to do a BG test.

The reason I asked whether I should be worried about a reading of 3.8 was because it’s classed as a hypo on the Diabetes UK site. What I wasn’t sure about was whether it was only of concern if it kept happening.

You don’t get hypos unless you’re diabetic. Your low reading is nothing to be worried about. It’s uncontrolled/uncontrollable highs which you need to worry about.

Oblomov23 · 07/02/2023 18:45

Isn't normal range 4-7 ?

AnotherNameChangeYes · 07/02/2023 18:45

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool new to what though?!!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/02/2023 18:47

@AnotherNameChangeYes New to monitoring my blood sugar and working out what’s normal and what isn’t.
I know you don’t get hypos unless you’re diabetic - that’s why I was concerned.

puppacup · 07/02/2023 18:47

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool

Why are you asking the OP if she is diabetic based on your reading if as you say you are new to it all?

puppacup · 07/02/2023 18:48

The OPs reading is completely normal.

AnotherNameChangeYes · 07/02/2023 18:48

But why are you monitoring your blood sugar?

As another mum of a diabetic child I am genuinely not understanding a thread full of non diabetic people worrying about their blood sugar. Do you not have enough to worry about? I do.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/02/2023 18:49

@puppacup I wasn’t asking the OP.

I have noticed mine are in the 4.5s 1 hour after eating and don't know that is too low to exercise. Have been scouring the web for a guide on what is too 'low' to exercise so am finding ths thread helpful

puppacup · 07/02/2023 18:51

Apologies then @SomethingNastyInTheBallPool but I still don't understand why you are monitoring your blood sugar but don't know anything about it?

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/02/2023 18:51

@AnotherNameChangeYes I’m concerned because I’ve been feeling really odd for a couple of months and have noticed it’s a lot worse when I’m hungry. I have quite a lot of risk factors for t2 diabetes.

Anything under 3.9 is classed as a hypo if you're a diagnosed diabetic. If you're not diabetic, it's nothing to worry about and low blood sugar isn't how it's diagnosed anyway.

I speaking to a friend who's an hca the other day, and she said that 3.8 wouldn't even be classed as low blood sugar in someone who isn't diabetic.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/02/2023 18:52

@hothands That’s really interesting - thank you.

Cas112 · 07/02/2023 18:53

Yes

Rebel2023 · 07/02/2023 18:54

@Twentywisteria sometimes you have to though. Every female in my family has a thyroid issue, every single one
They've been telling me for years mine is "fine"
Then I accidentally went to immunology (long story) and I actually have hashimotos and am now finally medicated!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/02/2023 18:55

@puppacup The Zoe program encourages you to monitor your blood sugar, but it’s very clear that it isn’t a diagnostic tool. It does give guidance about what a normal range is but it doesn’t give any medical advice, which is where I have questions.

GoTeamRocket · 07/02/2023 18:55

I don't know. I am type 1 diabetic and I find this thread really upsetting. I have to manage this condition for the rest of my life and it is really, really shit.

I am not sure what rhe purpose is of giving healthy people sensors, for giggles.

Anyway, I qm going to flounce off this thread now.

Endofmytether2020 · 07/02/2023 18:57

I do actually think letting people with prediabetes have a flash glucose monitor for a couple of weeks could be helpful if they are supported through it to help them identify the foods which make them spike (e.g. brown bread, porridge, bananas - food that is healthy but some people may not be able to tolerate) and to allow them to see what is going on to help with diet modification to try to prevent full type two diabetes. But without proper support it's going to lead to huge anxiety and pressure on the system and it's really not necessary if you haven't had an hba1c that shows that you are at risk to T2D. Abbot have had production problems in the past (and they are doing a recall at the moment) which led to strict rationing of Libre sensors. I hope they have the right system in place to make sure that people in need get the sensors they need. On a bad day someone with type one diabetes can swing between 1.2 mmol and 36 mmol and still do a day at work or school - I'm sharing this to explain why the numbers talked about on here don't seem worth losing sleep over.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/02/2023 18:57

I’m so sorry this is upsetting you, @GoTeamRocket . Flowers

AdventFridgeOfShame · 07/02/2023 18:58

@Twentywisteria these people are taking part in a very large scale clinical trial.

@Endofmytether2020 Thank you - that’s really useful information.

@Idontgiveagriffindamn Are you diabetic? I had a reading of 3.8 the other evening and wasn’t sure if I should be worried.

Over 10 is most definitely diabetic, sorry 🙁 have you sought medical attention for this?

As a rule of thumb, anything over 7.4 indicates pre diabetes at the very least.

puppacup · 07/02/2023 19:01

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool I'm surprised there isn't more advice tbh.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/02/2023 19:01

It was only by chance when I developed some awful neurological issues that I had a ton of blood tests. Picked up I'm pre diabetic and had horrendous cholesterol (8.3) as well as. Very high blood pressure. I'm now on 3 monthly bloods and checking blood pressure twice a day as well as low dose beta blockers and statins . Maybe a good idea is to pay and get a general check every 6 months to see if anything is creeping up. I admit I've paid £175 but that's for the full works including thyroid and antibodies, magnesium, B12, D3 , cholesterol, diabetes , liver and kidney function etc but that's because I have had an issue- so now keeping an eye on stuff
