The horror of it all is unimaginable. The death toll is currently 2,300 and seems to rise almost every time I check the BBC site. The stories and photos are so heartbreaking.

I know this is a pointless post as there's nothing I can do but donate to DEC but I can't look away either.

Just watching the news .. heartbreaking to see the numbers rise

mbosnz · 06/02/2023 15:35

Those poor, poor people.

IwasToldThereWouldBeCake · 06/02/2023 18:39

It is really so tragic, those poor people. So sad for them.

It really is. Over 2,600 dead now and it's expected to continue to rise. 11,000 + injured. The scale of it is unimaginable. How people even begin to know where to start is beyond me. I'm glad to see so much help being offered by so many countries though.

It's heartbreaking for people in both nations, but I can't help thinking that the people of Syria have been through so much already in recent years.

BlueThursday · 06/02/2023 18:47

With the weather being particularly harsh right now even those who have survived are in for an exceptionally tough time.

every aftershock must being new fear

I was thinking the same. If it was in summer, they have a higher chance of surviving in the most horrific conditions which is trapped under a rubble. The odds are against these poor people right now with the weather being extremely harsh. I'm praying for them.

Darkdiamond · 06/02/2023 19:26

Really awful. I read that the people in Syria were on their knees in terror thinking it was Judgement Day. I'm so sad about all of those displaced children who are trapped somewhere outside tonight.

JustAGirlInACountrySong · 06/02/2023 19:26

Awful and yes, it’s very cold there. aid is en route

is this the only thread?

Yes they mentioned that. As if they don't have more than enough to deal with. The WHO's latest update on how severely the death toll could rise is incredibly depressing. The scale of it is unimaginable as it is. I can only live in hope that it won't be as bad as feared, though it's more than terrible enough.

And yes, Syria has suffered far, far too much without this happening too.

Over 3000 dead now.

Was looking for a thread on this and can only find this one? It's such a huge thing, but I guess we do feel helpless and horrified by the sheer scale of suffering. The video footage shows scenes of pure hell. Can only pray, donate and feel guiltily thankful that we don't live in an earthquake zone in the UK.

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 06/02/2023 20:31

Makes me wanna cry honestly. So sad. Sad Same with watching the news about Afghanistan where so many people are displaced after the Taliban took over - and also Syria, and Ukraine etc etc etc... I feel blessed to live in the UK, and have my lovely warm home. So many people are suffering right now. Sad

Cuppasoupmonster · 06/02/2023 20:35

This is horrific!! I have a horrible feeling the 3000 is the tip of the ice berg. Why is life so harsh? I’m going to stop complaining about being a bit skint for now, and remind myself how lucky I am to go to sleep at night knowing that the U.K. is so incredibly safe when it comes to natural disasters. Hopefully a fundraiser will happen soon we can donate to.

FatSealSmugSoup · 06/02/2023 20:37

It was 1999 the izmit earthquake killed upwards of 17,000. I had friends living there who escaped by a miracle.

Jellykat · 06/02/2023 20:44

Its so so sad.. thank god various countries are acting quickly to help with the searches, restores a bit of faith in human nature.

teacupnugget · 06/02/2023 20:48

It's really tragic. The impact is scattered around several cities, towns and villages. Roads are affected by the earthquake rubble and of course the blizzard and ice isn't helping to access places to help people. The videos I've seen on some of the news pages are no different to an apocalyptic end of the world type of movie. It's so so sad and distressing to watch and read about😣

Elopelo · 06/02/2023 21:09

Can’t stop thinking about this… deaths have now risen to 3500 and sadly I think that number is going to go up and up and up… and a second massive earthquake hitting some hours later. Can’t even imagine the terror and fear that people must have felt.

I remember watching a documentary years ago where they were predicting that Istanbul could be the site of the next big earthquake but this one has hit on the other side of the country…

IncessantNameChanger · 06/02/2023 21:14

It's really impossible to comprehend right now. Wathing a tower block just cave in on the news. So many high rises. I can not imagine sleeping on the streets tonight surrounded by that hell on earth. Life does indeed feel very cruel at times

BBC said earlier we were sending out search teams who would hopefully fly out tomorrow, it struck me as being a bit late, why can't we get people out there sooner? The journalists were on the next flight and there by lunchtime.
In those conditions so many people who could have been found and saved today will be dead by tomorrow.
It makes me so sad, how many who have survived will survive the night? They have no where to go, no shelter or food in minus conditions. It's just terrible all round.

It is horrific. It makes me feel very lucky to be located where I am. In England, safe from a lot of natural disasters despite its overall shite

croppedhimout · 06/02/2023 21:17

@purpleboy During Covid Jet2 cancelled thousands of package deals and didn't refund so lots of people will be wondering.
