Let's be positive too - what simple thing are you totally excellent at?

I love the thread about stuff you cannot do (I can't draw, or spell broccoli) but wanted to flip it; so what random talent do you have that sets you apart?

I am excellent at untying knots - tightly pulled wet trainer laces? Not an issue. Tangled necklace chain? LEAD ME TO IT it's so satisfying.

I am also oddly skilled at doing random maths (percentages and fractions) and understanding the rules of English punctuation (when to use a semi-colon). That last one is my job tho tbf so it's just as well. Grin

What about you?

Problem solving, crisis management and breaking down tasks. I seem to be able to see what needs to be done and do it while others are still assessing the situation. While useful in life and death situations, this does tend to annoy managers who can't keep up.
I can multitask easily and switch from job to job and back again without missing a beat.

I'm also weirdly good at crochet and sewing, I've never been taught but can not only follow patterns, but adjust them up or down sizes without affecting the style, and alter them to add French seams rather than standard etc.

This question reminds me of going for interviews. Name three things you are good at. I'm hard pushed to find one thing. I can do stuff, but good at it? Don't think so.

Also the question, why do you think you would be the best person for job? Er, I could do the job, but the best person? Who knows.

Feeding the masses! Dinner for 60+ doesn't phase me, including catering for intolerances, allergies and preferences. Will be fairly simple, eg curries, lasagne, chilli, but tasty. Seem to have passed this skill on as both DC known for feeding their friends at uni.

Proof reading - never have to redraft my academic writing once I have finished a first draft, unless I need to cut the length. Regularly proof read essays and dissertations for students at our church. (Of course there will be a typo in this post now!)

I’m a top notch speller, though I fell down a bit on a recent University Challenge on a word I’ve read but not heard spoken. I can also untangle most threads, given enough time and patience. I can reattach buttons securely, and according to DH I make a mean shortcrust pastry.

Chanel05 · 05/02/2023 17:53

I'm really good at getting jobs. I have successfully secured lots of jobs in my time. I must make a good impression and sound articulate, though I'm generally rather shy.

clary · 05/02/2023 19:25

Great responses everyone. I am actually amazed at how many of us love a good detangling or unknotting challenge. Excellent stuff. Let the necklaces of the nation be wearable once more.

What a very talented group of people we are. Lots of parallel parking skill too which please me :)

I can parallel park fine as long as there are no moving vehicles within a mile radius! Or any passers by. Basically if no ones looking I can do it!🤣

Fizbosshoes · 05/02/2023 19:53

....so not very frequently!

crochetmonkey74 · 05/02/2023 19:55

Parallel parking and working out the direction I need to be going in even in a town or city I have never been to. Somehow I just can feel its the right direction . I dunno how I do it

hahah @Fizbosshoes I can parallel park pretty well but I have to turn the radio off - can't have anyone interrupting me with their chat or their music Grin

I am excellent at opening champagne bottles and unblocking toilets. So far, I have never found a champagne bottle I couldnt open or a toilet I couldnt unblock.

Two rather handy life skills I think.

I am very interested in how you unblock a toilet. For some reason, it's a thing that worries me

FenghuangHoyan · 05/02/2023 20:05

Cooking (certain dishes anyway. I have never really baked much). Stacking dishwashers. Lighting fires and apparently sex. That last one isn't big headed and it's not something I was aware of until an ex partner told me. Wish they'd said at the time.

Gah. How did I make that error? A mistake not a typo. Thanks.

I have a good memory. I’m the go to in the family if someone wants know something from the past.

That has to be the most gracious response ever to a spot of unwarranted grammar policing Grin!

I can advise after today's experience, that you don't scoop out all the water before using a plunger. It works best with toilet bowl half full of water...

ThreeRingCircus · 06/02/2023 13:47

I've got a really good memory so am usually pretty good in a pub quiz as my brain just seems to retain random trivia. I'm also good with names and remembering littler details people tell me about themselves.

I think I'm good at making my children feel secure. There is loads of parenting I get wrong but DDs know that I love them, they have a safe and happy home and that they can tell me anything. I always tell them when I'm proud of them. I'm trying to raise two bright, independent and kind humans and so far they're doing brilliantly. They're not yet teenagers though so it still has tine to all go wrong 😂.

Remotedreams · 06/02/2023 14:37

I am excellent at finding a bargain, can nearly always find a way to make a saving.
I also excel at taking naps

OhClunge · 06/02/2023 15:54

I'm good at dingbats, making Yorkshire puddings and listening to problems, I must have a sympathetic look about me Grin

ChaToilLeam · 06/02/2023 16:00

I have a good sense of direction and am great at navigating, even when I’ve never been somewhere before.

Also very good at recognising people or places, even if I have only been there or met them once.

Can touch type like the wind in two languages.

And am a cat whisperer and make friends easily even with scared or grumpy moggies.

KingofCats · 06/02/2023 16:04

I get stopped for directions all the time and I give them very competently. I must look like i walk with purpose.

Wilkolampshade · 06/02/2023 16:17

Rolling cigarettes. Spotting psychopathic boyfriends. Making dinners from nothing.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 06/02/2023 16:26

I make an amazing Christmas dinner.

Babies almost instantly fall asleep on me.

I make great soup.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 06/02/2023 16:28

I am 50 in less than two weeks. I am bloody brilliant at headstands. <preens>
