Will you be doing home schooling today?

If your child is not at school?

They have been set a days work with strict instructions to complete. I have 3 primary aged dc all at different levels. They cannot complete the work without my help. Eldest can do the work themselves but won't unless I help.

They have all already woke up early and tried to play video games. I've turned the games off and said we will get some fresh air, then come home and do school work, then they can play their games.

They are not happy about it and blaming me.

Today is going to be a struggle.

Who set the work? If your DC's teacher in strike they shouldnt be setting work and I doubt very much they would be checking the work. If it's a primary school and the teacher isn't on strike then they should be in teaching the class so if they are allowed to have a day not working I wouldn't make the child complete work set either.

sanityisamyth · 01/02/2023 08:20

Nope. School aren't setting work. I've got uni meetings to do (on zoom) and DS has a hair cut and a horse riding lesson.

ItWnm · 01/02/2023 08:22

They've definitely been set work. I have it printed out already. We had an email saying that it must be completed and handed in Thursday.

Mine won't be doing any. KS2 DC was given optional work, don't think my older DC have been set any.

MissWings · 01/02/2023 08:23

Nar. Waste of time.

Everydayitsgettingcloser · 01/02/2023 08:24

Our school said nothing about this so it's just a day off

GorillaGame · 01/02/2023 08:27

Absolutely not. We weren’t set any but it wouldn’t be happening if not. They will be outside playing and having a much needed break. Although, I don’t enforce homework at primary level either so there’s no change there. They need time to play and move, more than to sit down with worksheets.

GorillaGame · 01/02/2023 08:27

*if it had been

stepkidscopingstrategy · 01/02/2023 08:27

Don't stress. How old are they?
Use your own judgement- will this work be helpful to them in later life - or will a nice day with mum at home have more meaning to their lives later on?
Like you said - get yourselves some fresh air and take it from there xx xx
Make it a nice day for you xx life is too short - believe me x

MissWings · 01/02/2023 08:27

My sons school did set some but it’s just a tokenistic measure that no one is taking seriously. Waste of time and most people are just planning on enjoying the day off with their kids.

MissWings · 01/02/2023 08:28

@stepkidscopingstrategy

I know. Imagine stressing over this, can’t people just enjoy it for what it is? Make the most of it.

longestlurkerever · 01/02/2023 08:28

In the pandemic I found mine were easier to manage with work to do than nothing so I'm going to get mine to do theirs. They're 11 and 7 now but even in the pandemic they got on with it better than they entertained themselves without that structure. Also because this is likely the first of many and I don't want them to think school is a waste of time. But those are my reasons, rather than worrying about what school think. In fact if it wasn't going to be a pita for me I'd prefer to refuse in solidarity with the strikers.

lifeinthehills · 01/02/2023 08:28

I'd just enjoy the day off and do something fun. They're on strike, you don't have to pick up for that.

Lindy2 · 01/02/2023 08:29

Mine has been set work but it says the work doesn't need to be submitted and won't be checked by a teacher.

As I'm having a very hard time even getting my ASD child into school at the moment there's no chance of the work being completed. They have an absolute hatred of home schooling and homework since the lockdowns.

They really can't afford to loose another day of learning so it's really not an ideal situation.

SweetSakura · 01/02/2023 08:30

No. I have back to back teams meetings all day.

longestlurkerever · 01/02/2023 08:30

Non striking teachers are working but it's not safe to open the school with so few staff.

UnicorseTime · 01/02/2023 08:31

I think some of my secondary child's teachers will set work. The agreement is certain years are home but teachers will set work or be live if not striking.

So she would have to catch up the work of she missed it wouldn't she?!

Our primary isn't setting work.

Lolly86 · 01/02/2023 08:31

My year 4 has been set some generic work but no one will check it and its 'optional'. She isn't doing it. But she will get all her usual homework done today.

mumof3now2 · 01/02/2023 08:31

Nope... year 9 and 11
Have to be on teams for 9am, any of their teachers who are in school will do love lessons...
We have internet issues this morning
Luckily I can go to work as DH is here but imho, it's not my kids fault they can't go, so they can have the day off
Completely against striking in any form so not putting myself out

Catsandzcocktails · 01/02/2023 08:32

Yes. How old are your DC?
You could set them up with some work on BBC bite size for them to do independently.
And/ or sit with them individually and do a page of English and Maths with you. That wouldn't take very long.

Chillyoptimistic · 01/02/2023 08:32

No work set my for y6 DS so nope. He’s going to read this morning then he’s free to do what he wants (hoping he’ll want to do baking with me and toddler DD later)

Catsandzcocktails · 01/02/2023 08:35

ItWnm · 01/02/2023 08:22

They've definitely been set work. I have it printed out already. We had an email saying that it must be completed and handed in Thursday.

Just tell them you did some activities on BBC Bitesize. They couldn't do anything about it and wouldn't anyway. They won't even look at it. Tell them your printer broke if you feel you need an excuse.

Freetodowhatiwant · 01/02/2023 08:37

No way! I have enough going on with trying to juggle work and the kids at home. I am totally in support of the teachers striking but I would not be happy at all if they had sent home work and would not be doing it.

Ilovelurchers · 01/02/2023 08:40

I would suggest just get them to do the work if you want to, but don't if you don't. No teacher who is striking should be expected to check/mark the work completed during their strike, and non-striking colleagues should not really be setting work for those kids either.

If your kid's teacher is not striking and is therefore setting work, they are very likely to have ensured that it is the type of work that may reinforce prior learning but will not actively disadvantage any kid who doesn't complete it - because it's very obvious that many kids (the majority in some schools) will not be completing the work, indeed that many will be unable to depending on the amount of support available at home, parents' other commitments etc etc.

So basically, don't sweat it. I'd take the opportunity to do things you enjoy with your children.

DelurkingAJ · 01/02/2023 08:44

No, I’m WFH and DS2 (Y2) is going to have bumble around by himself. He’ll be safer than when we had to do the same in the pandemic when he was 4 (DH and I did a lot of tag teaming then but there were still moments!). DS1 is in school. No work has been set anyway.
