Will you be doing home schooling today?

If your child is not at school?

They have been set a days work with strict instructions to complete. I have 3 primary aged dc all at different levels. They cannot complete the work without my help. Eldest can do the work themselves but won't unless I help.

They have all already woke up early and tried to play video games. I've turned the games off and said we will get some fresh air, then come home and do school work, then they can play their games.

They are not happy about it and blaming me.

Today is going to be a struggle.

My dc is early primary and we haven’t been set any. I don’t think we should have to homeschool if the teachers are on strike, particularly as many parents (including myself) have had to take leave (potentially unpaid) from their own jobs at the last minute. That being said I’ve tried to work in some educational tasks into our day (practising dc’s reading and counting) but that was by choice.

My kids (reception and year two) have done play dough, painting, played with thier dolls and watching tv now. I am working at home. Want to try to get them out for some fresh air but have some teams meetings still to do so will have to see.

Our 7 year olds teacher is on strike and the school haven't set us any work and even if they had we wouldn't be doing it!

Yes. There are four days of planned strike action, for now. More may come later. I expect my kids to get on with whatever work they have set and I'll help if they need it.

Useit · 01/02/2023 14:56

There are many older DC 12+ in our town not doing much work, there were loads loitering down our local high street when I went out today, I bet loads more are loitering around the shopping centre

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 01/02/2023 14:59

no

it's a day off.
my youngest 3 are all recovering from various illnesses, 2 of then would've stayed home because of it anyway. I think they've done a bit of homework though.

MyFlagMeansIceCream · 01/02/2023 15:01

No because I'm actually working myself. They can say it needs to be done all they like, but I cannot have the day off. Kids are fine in the house with an adult present but won't work unsupervised so it isn't happening.

MarshaBradyo · 01/02/2023 15:02

No, luckily dc are in but the one who isn’t doesn’t need to

Suedomin · 01/02/2023 15:04

No set work we are having a nice day. and I'm surprised that striking teachers are setting work.

TokyoSushi · 01/02/2023 15:04

None set for Y5 DD

Quite a bit set for Y7 DS, but he did it all last night in about an hour and has had the day off today.

bluesky45 · 01/02/2023 15:08

Yes, my DC is in reception. We did some reading, comprehension, some maths work etc but my ds loves to do learning with mummy (younger ds does not! But he was in nursery) and I'm a teacher so I know what I'm doing and didn't have any of my own work to do today. It was nice to spend some 1:1 time with him because it so rarely happens. We did just less than 1hr total which I expect is more focused learning than he does in one day at school.

Useit · 01/02/2023 15:08

Some DC will be looked after by relatives, surely they won't be expected to home school.

Timaya · 01/02/2023 15:11

No. Homework is always optional at DD's primary anyway.

Welshmonster · 01/02/2023 15:55

What are the school going to do if it’s not completed? Any teacher that was striking won’t be marking it. They shouldn’t have set cover work anyway.
I’m a teacher and not NEU so been in school today with 2 other teachers. I said I was having a lock in with my class and not to ask me to sort out any other classes or pupils Barring an emergency in school.

don’t worry about it. Loads of kids won’t have done it.
this shows how your school treats its teachers so no wonder they are striking as bullying leaders are causing people to leave the profession.

Floofyduffypuddy · 01/02/2023 16:14

I must say regardedles of whether one agrees or disagree with the striker I'm amazed some pp.are making a link between children doing work and solidarity with strikers?

I'm not seeing that link?

Johnduttonsbuttocks · 01/02/2023 16:16

Only our 6yo has been home. Today was planning, shopping for and then baking a cake. With a bit of TV at the end. Very nice day it was too. (His mum was working from home, but was mostly unmolested.)

Floofyduffypuddy · 01/02/2023 16:19

@bluesky45

That quality learning 1:1 at home was made very clear during lock down.
It really is incredible what you can achieve 1:1 on short time

Biscuits1011 · 01/02/2023 16:21

Nope. Not a chance am i home schooling

MamaBear4ever · 01/02/2023 16:47

Two at high school year 7 and 9. They were set some vague tasks that won't be looked at and can't evidence whether they did or not. I made them get all the homework tasks up-to-date and then they have had the day off. I had too much work to do to supervise

SimonandGarfunkel · 01/02/2023 16:54

Lol! Yr 10 DD has gone out for lunch with 6 friends, and to stop and chat to their favourite teachers on the picket line. V proud of her😁

daffodilandtulip · 01/02/2023 17:03

Year 9 and Year 12 - neither had any set. Both closed.

PennyRa · 01/02/2023 17:10

It's your legal responsibility to ensure they receive a full-time education

ohfook · 01/02/2023 17:13

No it undermines the purpose of the strike and will be of no tangible benefit at all to your dc.

ichundich · 01/02/2023 17:16

No, it's a legal obligation to send your child to school unless they are registered as homeschooled.

No it's not and there is no 'registered as homeschooled' 😂
