Are you drying your laundry outside in this weather? (South of England)

We live in the South of England. Today the outside temperature here is 8 degrees C. It's dry. Would my laundry dry if I were to hang it outside? I usually dry it in the conservatory on an airer. It takes two days. But I was wondering whether placing the airer in the garden would speed things up if it's not raining. But is it too cold, even though it's dry, for laundry to dry outside?

What are you guys doing at the moment?

Sunny and windy here in SE London so our bed clothes are all flapping around on the line in the garden. May not be bone dry at the end of the day but will be dry by morning which they wouldn't have been otherwise

PuttingDownRoots · 30/01/2023 12:09

I'm in Yorkshire
Its cooler than that. I find stuff gets about 75%dry outside then finishes up overnight inside.

I've just hung mine out too in Surrey. So very satisfying to see it flap around in the wind and sun. I think it should be pretty dry in a couple of hours.

In the SW and any day that has no rain forecast i put washing out, sometimes the breeze drys it enough to finish off on the radiators somedays if its coldwith no breeze it comes in early afternoon cold and still wet but it does smell fresher from being outdoors.

User478 · 30/01/2023 12:53

If the pavement is dry your laundry will dry.

(You might just need to bring it in to finish it off as it'll take longer than in high summer!)

MNisMyGuiltyPleasure · 30/01/2023 12:58

I just put a load on - I will try and place the airer outside and see how that goes. I haven't used the tumble dryer in ages unless I need to finish drying (and fluff up) towels. Even ten it's for five - ten minutes at the most.

As a previous poster said, it seems to get about 80% dry at this time of year outside. Then I put it on racks by the radiator to finish off.

WildRosie · 30/01/2023 13:02

I'm in West Yorkshire but yes, unusually. So are my neighbours. It's bright, sunny, breezy and dry (at the moment) so a good opportunity.

charabang · 30/01/2023 13:22

Put mine out yesterday in Midlands. Dried 90% beautifully with an overnight finish on airer. Yay!

HinnyHoway · 30/01/2023 13:30

Mines been out since about half 10, just checked it and it’s drying well but it’s windy here which is key. It’ll be dry come this evening but I think you’ll need to put it out earlier than now (plus washing time if you’ve just put a load on).

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/01/2023 13:32

I've been drying mine outside all week and I'm in the North. It just needs airing when you bring it in.

howrudeforme · 30/01/2023 13:34

Essex and south facing garden. It will be about 80 percent dry by the time sun goes.

OddBoots · 30/01/2023 13:38

I am in Suffolk and put mine out at 8am today and have just brought it in completely dry.

Whattheladybird · 30/01/2023 13:39

Three loads on today (as there are most days if I can). If the pavement dries, my washing will dry. There’s a bit of a breeze too. Will probably need to put some of it on the heated airer to finish tonight but it’ll be a lot easier than drying inside.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 30/01/2023 13:40

Windy here so the bedding is out and drying well. Excited to sleep in it tonight 😂

Omg I'm jealous

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2023 13:43

Sunny and windy here. The washing is drying nicely.

hoochyhag · 30/01/2023 13:48

West Yorkshire.
Put mine out around 7am.
Now dry.
Yep good day today sunny and windy, but if I choose a windy and/or sunny day even in the winter, they are usually 95% dry. Then it's leaving them for an hour on unheated airer in the house.
Saved me loads.

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 30/01/2023 13:51

My duvet cover etc are drying nicely today, outside here in the SE.

Hillbilly · 30/01/2023 13:51

I'm in SE and hanging it outside this year. Usually wait for warmer weather but it's doing quite well and like others, finish it off inside.

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/01/2023 13:52

I dry outside on sunny and preferably windy days. It's damp when it comes in but dries quickly inside. Sheets are nearly always almost dry on windy days. I'm in Hertfordshire.

LimeTreeGrove · 30/01/2023 13:53

Today is the first day I've thought looks like good drying weather as its sunny where we are

dalmatianmad · 30/01/2023 13:58

My washing goes out most days, unless it's raining/snowing.
I'm in Derbyshire.
All my bedding is out there now, just checked it, almost dry.
Can't wait for bed tonight!

confusedofengland · 30/01/2023 13:58

I have a load hanging out today (in Essex). Bright sunshine, although north-facing garden & cold wind. I expect it will be mostly dry when I bring it in.

I worry about mould when I dry inside, so should help with that, too.

Yarrawonga · 30/01/2023 13:58

It’s lovely drying day today.
