Are you drying your laundry outside in this weather? (South of England)

We live in the South of England. Today the outside temperature here is 8 degrees C. It's dry. Would my laundry dry if I were to hang it outside? I usually dry it in the conservatory on an airer. It takes two days. But I was wondering whether placing the airer in the garden would speed things up if it's not raining. But is it too cold, even though it's dry, for laundry to dry outside?

What are you guys doing at the moment?

A long washing line is more effective IME. Each item gets the full force of a breeze and the sunlight.

KirstenBlest · 31/01/2023 10:50

A long washing is one of the joys of life.

You don't need to duck to avoid spinning poles when there's a breeze with a long line!

But a rotary doesn't take up a whole garden...

Grey grey skies here in the SE and little wind - not worth the effort. It goes in my airing cupboard or in the tumble dryer depending on what it is.

I always put things outside unless it’s pouring with rain
if the ground is dry washing will dry

KnittedCardi · 31/01/2023 11:25

Just about to put this mornings load out, another nice blowy sunny day...... some git has just lit a bonfire 😭

But the rotary things are ugly and the washing doesn't dry as quickly

My brother in law (Hampshire) said yesterday his was on the line. But shocked as I ever put mine out in Yorkshire, but maybe I will in future.

purpledalmation · 31/01/2023 11:36

You can ask Alexa what the humidity is outside too

Useit · 31/01/2023 11:38

I have mine out in Northamptonshire, I'm planning on doing my towels tomorrow and sheets next day, it looks quite drying all week

Useit · 31/01/2023 11:39

I have a long washing line and homemade wooden line props

KnittedCardi · 31/01/2023 11:54

I have a massive rotary with four arms. It drys really well. We do live on a hill though, and it's always windy, even when it's 30c! In the summer washing literally drys in 20 mins.

MNisMyGuiltyPleasure · 31/01/2023 16:23

Laundry just brought in. It seems dry-ish but it's very cold so I need to wait a little while and then check again. My jeans are still quite damp, though.

Not yet, but we're fortunate to have a good bit of drying space in the house so not desperate to get washing outside - yet!

We've just moved house and I'm waiting to see the best sunny spot in the garden for the Whirly gig to go on!

TheChosenTwo · 31/01/2023 17:01

No. Have got an airer which I use indoors as it’s a warm house and if I put things on it in the morning they are dry by the evening and same if I hang things up in the evening they are dry in the morning. I tried putting the airer outside the other day but it was all still damp when I brought the airer back in so left it on, seemed to take a whole day! Longer than when I just have it on the airer.

Nannyfannybanny · 31/01/2023 17:01

East Sussex here. I check forecast, last couple of days have been windy and sunny,so all the washing up to date. Rotary airer, then it either goes on the bottom shelf of the airing cupboard,or if very damp, heated airer.

If the pavement is dry your laundry will dry.

(You might just need to bring it in to finish it off as it'll take longer than in high summer!)

Totally agree!

I was saying to DP this weekend when I could start putting washing outside again. So glad I came across this thread, popped it all out this morning , three loads of bedding and it's come in 4 hours later dry and smelling beautiful. Thank you!

God I'd love that. I'm obsessed with drying outdoors!

Princesspollyyy · 31/01/2023 21:40

Washing dried lovely today on the line outside, it was 11 degrees, sunny and windy

Nanalisa60 · 31/01/2023 21:54

Lovely cold windy sunny day here NE Scotland , have had washing out most days this week.

almondflake · 01/02/2023 08:38

Not a chance here , north west in the hills . It's rained nearly every day 😫

SparkyBlue · 01/02/2023 08:46

I haven't as it's still just too damp here. The kind of weather where the paving stones in the back are wet but no rain type of weather . However it's definitely starting to get brighter so hopefully I will be able to hang them out soon

Crumpetdisappointment · 01/02/2023 08:47

i dont know why it didnt dry yesterday, i suspect its because dh brought it in too late.
but today looks like a good drying day

elevenplusdilemma · 01/02/2023 08:51

Yes if I can get it out first thing and if I'm likely to be home to bring it in before 3:30 as otherwise it just gets damp again as the day draws in.

If the path dries, the washing will too (top tip from my Nan!)
