I was sat on the top deck of a bus behind two teens who looked older, but from their conversation are building up to do their GCSEs.

Boy 1, 'What've you got on Monday?'
Boy 2 'Ahhh DT innit'
Boy 1 'What're you making?'
Boy 2 'Ahhh, bear-shit man'.. (to which boy 1 nods)

So Design & Technology I'm guessing? I have no idea what this involves, in my day it was woodwork/metalwork or needlework.. 😂What type of object is a bear-shit DT object?

I work with some young people so for fun I sometimes use teen talk. My teens are mortified.
Sometimes I say something that to me is innocent but they inform me could be very rude. For example I might say - I hooked up with James last week - meaning we had a coffee and chat. They scream at me - Mum! You can't say tht!!!. Of course I say it more after that.

Slay

Wink

Ah-ha - Google suggests this means:

"I am excellent at this, in fact it may be fairly said I have mastered this skill."

Teenage speak?

I'm 38 and I would say bare shit 😳

I'd never heard it until this thread.

LookingOldTheseDays · 29/01/2023 17:28

"Bare" meaning "lots of" or being used for emphasis was around when I was a teen too, and I'm in my 40s.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 28/01/2023 19:50

Those of you with teens - do you use their language back to them in conversation?

I did.

It took one conversation and the threat of it happening in public next time, for it to stop and never be heard again.

Where abouts are you?

I'm Manchester and very common here.

I'd say 'there's bare food in the cupboard'

I'm in Yorkshire - perhaps it's a red rose/white rose language difference!

'there's bare food in the cupboard'

If someone said this I'd presume they meant the exact opposite to what everyone on this thread is saying it means, I'd link it to the cupboards are bare, as in nothing in them.

Me too, I'd be thinking if Old Mother Hubbard.

Those of you with teens - do you use their language back to them in conversation?

Well, this is the funny thing for me. My Ds and his friends tend to speak in our areas old dialect which was dying out but has recently had a resurgence amongst teens. Most people my age don’t speak like that but I didn’t a lot of time with grandparents and so have always been able to slip in and out of it.

Yes fam.
My kids think it's hilarious, but also gets me cool points.

Lavenderflower · 29/01/2023 18:24

Bare was around when I was a teen and I almost 40.

DahliaMacNamara · 29/01/2023 18:32

I've seen two kids through their teens, consecutively rather than concurrently, and never heard either of them use 'bare shit', or any other teen language I didn't understand. Perhaps they just didn't want me saying it back to them.

Sweetnhappy1 · 29/01/2023 18:56

I also used to hear the term bare shit a lot in the 90s and am in my 40s now, it's not new teen speak.

Those of you with teens - do you use their language back to them in conversation?

Yes, with the deliberate aim of making them cringe with embarassment

RecoIIectionsMayVary · 29/01/2023 19:13

I've not hear 'bare shit'

But I love NPCs, turns out I know loads but never had the word for them.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 29/01/2023 19:37

My teens don't speak like this, but I do sometimes to wind them up. Innit fam. Does the job perfectly! Grin

MerryMarigold · 02/02/2023 10:33

I'm quite amused my very cool teen says "Do one!" (Only as a joke to me). You have to pronounce it "Doe one" to get it right. I remember that from my teen days!

doadeer · 02/02/2023 10:36

Bare shit isn't new. My husband is mid thirties and he says this (grew up zone 1 London). Lots of the slang is Carribean words he grew up with. It's just all more mainstream now (and used by white kids)

Timaya · 02/02/2023 10:38

We spoke like this when I were a teen 10 years ago!

Bare - A lot
Peak - Bad

"Bare shit" - a lot of shit (shit can either be used simply to mean "stuff" or to mean "bad stuff")

"Bare peak shit" - either "A lot of bad shit to do" or "Very bad shit"

So you could say "I've been going through bare peak shit lately" and it could either mean "I've been going through a lot of bad stuff" or "I've been going through really bad stuff" depending

Timaya · 02/02/2023 10:41

Tbh I'm mid/late 20s and still use some of the slang from my youth. I definitely say innit but that's pretty common and normal regardless.

AdamRyan · 02/02/2023 10:44

I love talking teen to my kids

Yesterday one of my 18yo friends served me in a shop and was friendly, so I told my 18 yo his friend had mum-rizz over dinner. Teens nearly died of embarrassment

Also enjoy telling them they look drippy and peng/leng

It's so funny. I slay at teen embarrassment

Timaya · 02/02/2023 10:45

Gwenhwyfar · 29/01/2023 13:37

Any chance people can explain what these words mean in their posts? I know I could look them up...

There was also "Leng"
