I like watching things like NCIS.

Over the years, I’ve heard the phrase watch your six and just let it fly over my head expecting not to understand it.

Literally the other day, it suddenly occurred to me…it means watch your back!!

Of course it does!

Remember Sarah Palin's classic line " I can see Russia from my house".

I don't think she ever said that. Tina Fey said it on SNL, impersonating Sarah Palin.

The source of the SNL sketch was Palin actually saying ' "They're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska" '

But Eeyore is Bourriquet (=small donkey) in the French version. Where are people getting Colin from?

I always thought Disney was Gisnep and it was French way of spelling it. I still can’t not see Gisnep.

I’m baffled by square numbers. Why are they square? I failed maths though so maybe I’m being dense

I have a first class honours in Economics and took pure Maths for my first 2 years of University I have studied entire modules of geometry.

I am still, learning right this minute (actually had to Google it)... That square numbers make squares.

Here is an explanation aimed at children in case it's helpful:

If you type Bourriquet into Google translate it comes back as "eeyore"!

Growing up and driving near London, I was always amazed at the sheer number of toilet signs all missing the i’s to show where the toilets were….I was probably early teens when I realised they were actually ‘to let’ signs not lots of misspelt toilets

To be fair though, with the quality of the rentals back then, you wouldn’t have been far wrong…

This thread is amazing, and im embarrassed at how many i only learned this evening.

However... i found out 2 days ago that the price labels on the shelves in Aldi are electronic. Not paper.

Tbf, they have only recently changed in most stores.

One thing I only recently found out about was that there’s a difference between spider webs and cobwebs. Cobwebs are old abandoned spider webs 🕷 😎

Incredible!

MrsRinaDecker · 29/01/2023 22:14

The song hot blooded.. I always thought the line was “hot blooded, suck it and see..” Blush Turns out it’s actually “hot blooded CHECK it and see, I’ve got a fever of 103..” Teen ds was in hysterics at me for that one!

Ppbbww9 · 29/01/2023 22:15

I was only told what a twat was a couple of years ago (I'm 50). Honestly thought it was a harmless word, like wally or eejit.

3luckystars · 29/01/2023 22:21

that thing about square numbers is brilliant, I never thought of it that way!

Velvian · 29/01/2023 22:29

I was embarrassingly old when it suddenly occurred to me that La Mer and Somewhere Beyond the Sea are the same song.

Tiredtiredtired37 · 29/01/2023 22:32

This really tickled me! 🤣

Currants. I thought they were a weird form of raisin, maybe made from smaller, poorer quality grapes. Didn't occur to me until I was in my 40s that they were...currants. Dried currants. Currants just like the ones my dm grew in the garden, which I had been picking and eating pretty much all my life.

Still think they taste weird and nasty.

Youcwere right the first time! Currants are also from grapes- just a different variety than sultanas & raisins. Just gad to google to double check though!!

I also thought centre parcs was under a giant bubble like the Truman show. I was disappointed that it wasn't and all desire to go there left me.

Same with me. When I found out I remember thinking, well what's the point of them then?

Velvian · 29/01/2023 22:41

I felt the same about the Eden Project. I thought it was a completely sealed biosphere. We went and there were windows open and I thought nope, I want a refund 😂. There were also plastic bunches of grapes stuck to vines, but I was already disillusioned by that point!

🤣🤣🤣
Only a few short years ago me & DH discussing dog breeds, me ' I remember having a Doberman as a kid, he was lovely but he had to go live on a farm because the farmer needed a dog to help him round the farm'
DH looks at me like this Confused

I had a similar conversation with my children a few weeks ago when I was explaining the time my dad told me the Guineapig had died as it struck by lightening 🤔😆

Do you remember the smarties adverts from the 80's and 90's.
A few years ago, I suddenly understood why 'only smarties have the answer'.
😂

What DO Smarties have the answer to?

Heard on the radio this week where we get the word raspberries from, as in blowing raspberries.
It’s Cockney rhyming! Raspberry tart! Never realised!

Unlike raspberry ripple = cripple.

Raspberry ripple is nipple you wombat 🤣

iusedtaecoulddaethat · 29/01/2023 22:56

That the petrol pumps aren't actually filled with petrol. I thought the tankers came and filled them a few times a day.

Silentmama · 29/01/2023 23:03

PurpleWisteria1 · 29/01/2023 22:55

Raspberry ripple is nipple you wombat 🤣

I think that is the PC version - the original did stand for cripple.

ArabellaScott · 29/01/2023 23:07

it's a 'fine-tooth[ed] comb', not 'a fine tooth-comb'.

Chelseagreen · 29/01/2023 23:08

shinynewapple22 · 29/01/2023 15:52

I thought that it was offering a biscuit to be kind - like the tea and cake emojis.

Surely it means that the comment it refers to “takes the biscuit”.

Ratters123 · 29/01/2023 23:18

Mace is the outer layer of Nutmeg.
Allspice is not made up of all spices mixed together! But is the unripe fruit of the Pimenta dioica!!

PuttingDownRoots · 28/01/2023 20:35

Those light sticks in Star Wars? I thought they were called lightsavers.

Light SABRES. As in light-sword.

My son always called them 'light savers' too - we still tease him about it now (he's 26!).

TheShellBeach · 29/01/2023 23:21

JudgeRudy · 29/01/2023 22:54

Well, for one thing, why I'm not exactly skinny.
