I like watching things like NCIS.

Over the years, I’ve heard the phrase watch your six and just let it fly over my head expecting not to understand it.

Literally the other day, it suddenly occurred to me…it means watch your back!!

Of course it does!

Madame Gazelle on peppa pig is French, and her name is a play on the word mademoiselle. I didn't realise that for ages.

And Inverness is further west than Plymouth.

Noooo !! 🤔🥴😳

Why do people keep saying that it would make sense for 'six' to be rhyming slang for 'six-pack' = back?

A six pack isn't on your back.

Unless I've spent my whole life misunderstanding what a six pack is.

rhyming slang is not linked to the 'real' item - it was used to hide conversations from 'officials' .. apples and pears - stairs - raspberry tart - fart - none of these are linked either!

I knew about fortnight. I'm sure I read in Pride and Prejudice se'n night (seven nights) which has been lost to modern English when we studied it for GCSE.

I thought sprouts grew like mini cabbages in rows until I was in my early 20s. My dad came home with a stalk of them from the market one Christmas. Blew my mind 😆.

It's not just me!!! I saw a field of them. My OH still laughs about it now, 25 years on

FloydPepper · 29/01/2023 21:12

And now I’ve caught up I see I’ve been beaten to “sennight” 😞

Terry = Terence

Therefore Barry = Barence

Harry = Henry

Therefore Barry = Benry

Doidontimmm · 29/01/2023 21:19

DadDadDad · 29/01/2023 10:36

Does everyone know that Edinburgh is further west than Cardiff? (It's very close).

Edinburgh is east 😂

jaundicedoutlook · 29/01/2023 21:19

TheFifthTellytubby · 29/01/2023 21:13

Harry = Henry

Therefore Barry = Benry

But Larry = Laurence.

Therefore Barence wins!

Vavazoom · 29/01/2023 21:22

That the start credits of Bluey are actually them playing musical statues!

Doidontimmm · 29/01/2023 21:19

Edinburgh is east 😂

Cardiff's latitude is 3.1681° W, Edinburgh's is 3.1883° W.

ilovesushi · 29/01/2023 21:23

I also thought centre parcs was under a giant bubble like the Truman show. I was disappointed that it wasn't and all desire to go there left me.

JustAnotherManicNameChange · 29/01/2023 09:16

It's actually two V's together. In Spanish (and some other latin based languages it's doble uve , uve being V , double V.

The English speaking countries just got it wrong.Grin

It depends on the style of writing. Old 'hands' (different styles of writing for different documents) scrbed letters in various forms. In some of these hands, v and u were written the same.

DadDadDad · 29/01/2023 21:27

@Doidontimmm - how do you come to that conclusion? According to Google maps, Edinburgh castle is at longitude 3.20 degrees W, while Cardiff castle is at 3.18 degrees W. I said it was close! If you want a clear-cut one: Edinburgh is further WEST than Bristol.

I've never admitted this to anyone before, and never will again, but I only realised last year that the two letters in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. are the last two letters in each word if you write it down as first, second, third, fourth. I apologise unreservedly for my ignorance.

Mind blown 🤯

DadDadDad · 29/01/2023 21:30

Cross-post with @NewBootsAndRanty - although you mean longitude not latitude.

NewBootsAndRanty · 29/01/2023 21:31

Yes, I bollocksed that one up a bit.

I have a friend Bartholomew who is known as Barry.

I like Barrington alot.

Took me a few episodes of the Simpsons to realise that Bart was short for Bartholomew.

marvellousmaple · 29/01/2023 21:37

ScarlettDarling · 29/01/2023 19:34

What???
I actually had to Google this as I thought you were wrong! Only 3.8 km between them at their closest point 🤯

Remember Sarah Palin's classic line " I can see Russia from my house".

ortonym · 29/01/2023 21:37

jaundicedoutlook · 29/01/2023 21:19

But Larry = Laurence.

Therefore Barence wins!

Wouldn't that be "Baurence"? 😀

I knew a guy called Barry who was called "Baz" by everyone (apart from his wife).

Now "Oz" is short for "Oswald"
"Baz" must be short for "Baswold"

DadDadDad · 29/01/2023 21:38

On the geographical ones, I'll just throw in that Portsmouth is on an island (separate from the British mainland).

FloydPepper · 29/01/2023 21:41

Gazza = Gascoigne (as in the footballer)

Bazza = Bascoigne

WeWereInParis · 29/01/2023 21:46

Remember Sarah Palin's classic line " I can see Russia from my house".

I don't think she ever said that. Tina Fey said it on SNL, impersonating Sarah Palin.

You're omitting the squares of negative numbers are positives and a negative number can only have a square root in the rarified atmosphere of complex numbers!

One concept at a time please. For some non mathematical minds the idea of multiplying negative numbers and getting a positive result is going to send their brains into gridlock. 🤣

Tiles or bricks or Oxo cubes will explain square/cubic numbers quite adequately. If you want to get into negatives you’ll have to use the financial balance sheet analogy to explain it. And as for complex numbers, not on a Sunday night, please - too much like doing one’s homework at the last minute. 😵‍💫

History doesn't come from his story though does it?

No. But in recent year people have suggested it does.
