If there was something that could tell you the day you would die..

Would you want to know?

Imagine a world, where knowing the day you die is known automatically to you if you wish it.

Would you wish to know?

I just wonder if it would “normalise” death a bit which means people wouldn’t need to grieve as much as they know when this person would die.

I would want to know.

I wouldn't want to know

Frenchfancy · 25/01/2023 19:55

I wouldn't want to know yet. But I would like to know when I got older, 70 perhaps. So I knew whether to make plans for the future.

HannaHat · 25/01/2023 19:55

No I definitely wouldn't want to know.

Christmascracker0 · 25/01/2023 19:56

No way. I worry enough as it is.

stairgates · 25/01/2023 19:56

No. At what age would.you be given access to this knowledge? I'm thinking would my child know they weren't going to finish school scenario?

Tidsleytiddy · 25/01/2023 19:56

No I bloody wouldn’t want to know! I’d spend all my life obsessing over the date. It makes me shudder. I’m far too much of a worrier x

Currently making decisions about pension drawdown so knowing exactly when we were going to die would be quite useful.

Tamarindtree · 25/01/2023 20:00

Mine is June 27th 2045. I think that’s stretching it a bit and I doubt I will
live as long as that.

Ooh I have 30 years left

BroomHandledMouser · 25/01/2023 20:04

Shit I die in 20 years time….I’m only 38 🤣🤣👍🏻

PacificallyRequested · 25/01/2023 20:07

I wouldn't want to know now that I'm going to die in, say, 2067. But it might be helpful to get a heads up in late 2066 so I can get my affairs in order, go on a spending spree etc.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 25/01/2023 20:08

Oooh 2080
definitely can’t be bothered to hang around that long

NCSQ · 25/01/2023 20:08

I get why people wouldn't want to know, but in fact it would be awesome in terms of planning. Especially career and financial planning.

Bananajuice · 25/01/2023 20:09

I lost my partner suddenly last month and there's so much left unsaid so 100% I would want to know!

silverclock222 · 25/01/2023 20:09

I've got 25 years to go - honestly if I knew that was the definate date I would make lots of different decisions, so its a yes from me!

ShadowPuppets · 25/01/2023 20:09

Apparently I hit 75. I’d love to get to my 80s but I guess that sees my kids into their 40s so I can live with that if I must, I suppose.

In answer to the original question, I wouldn’t want to know the year but I would want to know the day/month. I always find it bizarre that I hit the anniversary of my death yearly and I don’t know it. It’s like not knowing your birthday.

matthancockslovechild · 25/01/2023 20:09

I've only got 14 years to go! I'm 38!

Oh it would be good to know the anniversary. But every year on that day you'd be so anxious!

Reluctantadult · 25/01/2023 20:11

I read a book along these lines, called 'they both die in the end'. It is set in the future where 'death cast' cold calls you at midnight to inform you you've got 24hrs. You don't know how you'll die or what time in that 24hrs. The two main characters receive the call. They're both alone. They use social media 'last friend' to reach out and are matched together and meet up. It was a really good book. Caused lots of debate at my book club! Imagine what knowing you won't die that day would do for the rest of your life... I said I'd want to know. I was the only one!

Ha! That’s a good point. I’d probably be more careful crossing the road!
(but then would I mess with the space-time continuum by attempting to thwart my own death?! Interesting…)

LangClegsInSpace · 25/01/2023 20:14

Yes, it's always easier to plan if you have a deadline.

gamerchick · 25/01/2023 20:14

Don't you go on the lines on your inner wrist or something. Like one full line means 20 years of life?

Hbh17 · 25/01/2023 20:14

At the age I am now (late 50s), I think it would be fine because, obviously, death isn't too far away now. I'm too old to worry about it, and I'm actually rather looking forward to it. And it would certainly help with financial planning!

Aposterhasnoname · 25/01/2023 20:15

God no, can you imagine getting up on the day knowing that todays the day you die. You'd spend the whole run up second guessing yourself, was that a chest pain I felt, should I cross this road, is this chicken out of date?

What about people who die in a plane crash. They’d know, all of them, that they were going to die, but get on the plane anyway. And what if you didn’t get on the plane, would it be like final destination where you have death stalking you?
