If there was something that could tell you the day you would die..

Would you want to know?

Imagine a world, where knowing the day you die is known automatically to you if you wish it.

Would you wish to know?

I just wonder if it would “normalise” death a bit which means people wouldn’t need to grieve as much as they know when this person would die.

I would want to know.

In some ways it would be helpful to know whether me or DH will die first, then we could plan for the one left on their own? But then if DH is predicted to be hit by a bus next Tuesday, I wouldn’t want to know!

HerRoyalNotness · 25/01/2023 22:36

I don’t want to know but I do

i got another 29years which isn’t much really and I’d only be 79, that’s not so old… especially considering I have a 5yo. Want to be here for as long as I can for her

Logicalreasoning · 25/01/2023 22:36

I’m not afraid of dying personally, I’m afraid for my kids and how they’d manage after I’ve died... everyone dies it’s a part of life.. it’s the aftermath for me. I don’t think I’d like to know, I just wanna live my life normally without knowing my expiry date, because I believe subconsciously we’d live it different if we knew... maybe that’s a good thing for some people...

illiterato · 25/01/2023 22:38

I don’t wanna know the exact day but ballpark would be helpful- like 5 years ior 20 years or 50 years

It’s just given me an extra 16 years when I switched from normal to optimistic. I think living to 96 would test my optimism.

OldTinHat · 25/01/2023 22:40

Bugger. I have 26yrs left to get through.

DuesToTheDirt · 25/01/2023 22:42

Hmm Death Clock said I'll be 93. Then I did it again (same input info) and it said 99! Third time I get 96... So it's just randomly generating numbers, yes?

I lost my partner suddenly last month and there's so much left unsaid so 100% I would want to know!

So very sorry 😢

EarthPunchingBack · 25/01/2023 22:42

@Hbh17 late 50s?? I’m not much younger than you and hoping to have at least another 30 years! I’ve got so much living left to do 😳

hellobethyname · 25/01/2023 22:43

Bollocks I die a year after I retire . Fuckity fuckity fuck

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/01/2023 22:43

Hell, no.

gooseduckchicken · 25/01/2023 22:44

No I wouldn't want to know. I think it would paralyse me rather than spurring me into getting my bucket list ticked off. I don't even have a bucket list so I'd probably panic about perfecting it rather than getting things done.

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin is a good read on this topic.

Fourth time lucky, I hit the jackpot (100).

HyggeTygge · 25/01/2023 22:45

If someone proved they had the method of being able to tell me for sure, I still wouldn't want to know, but I'd spend a lot of time being pissed off that I had to choose and that I chose to stay in the dark... even though the other option is probably worse!

I think I'd want a bit of a heads up actually, like 2 years in advance/advance of any horrible diagnosis.

JadeSeahorse · 25/01/2023 22:46

Nooooooo!

Shall definitely be avoiding that deathclock thing too! 😱

Fentylipgloss · 25/01/2023 22:50

I pray for death every night!
I would like to know to see how much longer I have to suffer this shit hell I am
living.

Clingfilm · 25/01/2023 22:50

Yes I would, like PPs have said, I want to know if i should bother with a pension and when to take the big trips I want to go on.

It's telling me I'll live to 102... Thanks but no thanks.

Well, according to this I was supposed to peg it in 2018. Still going stro

kindlyensure · 25/01/2023 22:55

There's a recent book called The Measure by Nicki Erlick which has this premise. People randomly receive a wooden box, inside which is a piece of string that measures how much time they have left. Some choose not to look, others are curious...(it's on my tbr pile -got good reviews!)

notnowmonster · 25/01/2023 22:56

We read a book with this premise in my book club - the immortalist by Chloe Benjamin - I'd like to know

Typo22 · 25/01/2023 23:07

God no.

Imagine if you found out you were going to die at, say, 30. You would wonder "am I going to get ill? Will it be cancer?" And then the closer and closer you get to the day you would rule out sickness so then you'd think "will I be murdered? Hit by a bus? Drown?"

So you get to the day, stay at home trying to defeat death and then some Final Destination shit happens where you fall down the stairs and go through a glass door 😳

No thanks!

asblindasabat · 25/01/2023 23:30

No I wouldn’t want to know. I’m happy not knowing.

According to death clock I've got another 35 years. With a BMI of 31. If I pick a BMI of less than 25 I get 36 years.

Might as well gave another fried mars bar then...

BamBamBilla · 25/01/2023 23:43
  1. Oh I can't be bothered to wait that long
