Is it really awful to have a day in bed?

I work full time, kids all grown.
Cleaned house and shopped yesterday but did sit around late afternoon reading.
this morning DH is pottering downstairs, I’m still in bed reading. DH has no problem with this (brings me a tea every now and again) I’m lovely and warm (no heating on in the house), dog tucked up alongside me.

Why can’t I just relax and enjoy without feeling guilty that I should be DOING something constructive.

Someone make me feel ok about being in bed at this time of day please!

Hi op
my god do not feel guilty you enjoy your duvet day in bed nothing needs doing everyone is happy and you deserve a relaxing day I am still in pyjamas cuddled up in a blanket with the pup reading my book as we speak as it’s my day off so don’t stress it just enjoy x

staciea31 · 22/01/2023 13:18

I’m fact I am contemplating taking a brew up to bed myself haha x

Mrsjayy · 22/01/2023 13:19

That sounds lovely I mean what do you have to do that can't wait.

NoSquirrels · 22/01/2023 13:19

Sounds A-OK to me! Get back to your book guilt-free, I say.

TedMullins · 22/01/2023 13:20

I do this every weekend and love it! It’s fine. Downtime is important. There’s no moral superiority in forcing yourself to do stuff all the time.

jadedspark · 22/01/2023 13:20

Sounds lush. Don't feel guilty, I can't wait to do this again when my kids are grown up.

ForestLilac · 22/01/2023 13:21

You sound fine so I say it’s all good.

Personally, it’s a sign my mental health is sliding down so I try not to.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 22/01/2023 13:24

Listening to your body's natural need to rest is important. You have nothing that needs doing, relax and enjoy!! Just make sure you make the decision to have a duvet day and then stick to it, no getting up or feeling guilty 🙂

LittleLillie · 22/01/2023 13:26

You are being productive.

You are resting your body and mind, everything else is done, you have no need to be anywhere. It’s the ultimate in self care enjoy every second.

JamSandle · 22/01/2023 13:29

We're so conditioned to do do do.

We are allowed to just be be be.

Relax and enjoy your day as best you can.

felulageller · 22/01/2023 13:31

It's only one o'clock it's not all day!

I need duvet days about once a month or I burn out.

Reading isn't doing nothing.

Gobolino80 · 22/01/2023 13:31

Do not feel guilty! I'm doing exactly the same today, but accompanied by a snoring cat. Time spent reading is never a waste or self indulgent, it's pretty critical to my mental well-being. Enjoy

Reclining · 22/01/2023 13:33

Omg enjoy it. You've raised your kids, this is the pay off. I'm looking forward to it. Only 18 years to go.

EarringsandLipstick · 22/01/2023 13:33

If you are enjoying it & it's making you feel good, that's great - do it!

For me, while I might in the short-term feel good, I'd feel crap at the end of the day I hadn't been outside, active & exercised. So I'd never have a day in bed, if well.

IreneJones · 22/01/2023 13:42

I'm very jealous. I'm desperate for a duvet day but have DC to look after, a dog to walk and DH is away. The company I used to work for allowed us to have two duvet days a year and I so wish I still worked for them right now! Enjoy your day and don't feel guilty!

LaFemmeDamnee · 22/01/2023 13:44

I am literally forcing my exhausted 8yo to do this. Rest is important for good health and productivity.

lookeelikee · 22/01/2023 13:54

Tuesday and Saturday are my duvet days.

Oldraver · 22/01/2023 13:55

I've done this today and not long got up

I had a coffee and biscuits, another coffee sausage sandwich and juice bought to me

I did keep saying I was trapped by the cat

Is it really awful to have a day in bed?
lovelilies · 22/01/2023 14:01

Same! I'm working night shift tonight though so do need to try and rest a bit

lovelilies · 22/01/2023 14:01

The poor cat would be lonely too if I was downstairs doing important things

Howtoberight · 22/01/2023 14:03

What are you reading? Need some recommendations!

MrsJBaptiste · 22/01/2023 14:05

I couldn't do it, I'd feel sweaty and actually be quite bored after an hour on my phone or reading.

But absolutely no problem with anyone else doing it!

trulyunruly01 · 22/01/2023 14:07

I think it's really important to have at least occasional 'stop the world, we're getting off' days. Pyjamas, picky foods only, regular warm drinks and ad hoc naps.
Probably 75% of MNetters are envious, as they charge from swimming lessons to the park to football practice to sorting uniforms and getting the homework completed.
Fear not, parents of Primary dc, your time will come!

zoinkss · 22/01/2023 14:08

Don't feel guilt, I'm having a duvet day too! My eldest is at work, middle is doing homework and youngest is gaming. Other half has made breakfast, prepped dinner and is out with the dogs because he doesn't know how to sit still. Im in my pjs in bed, swapping between my kindle and my phone hoping my beloved will be back soon so he can make me a hot choc 🤣

I feel no guilt whatsoever, everyone seems chilled and enjoying their day (well apart from my eldest but he's getting paid).

midsomermurderess · 22/01/2023 14:11

I think stilling that guilty voice is something only you can do. Notice it and then push it away, or find the source, your upbringing maybe, that might help.
