So worried nasty bu

My 17 yr old DD sustained a very nasty wound to her knee last Wednesday requiring surgery to clean and close up the wound. On Friday we returned to ED due to the knee becoming infected. More surgery was done on Saturday with further surgery is booked for Monday. IV ABs have been given.

I have just found out (via google) that the particular bug that has caused the infection is multi-drug resistant. Her leg is oozing and it smells awful. She is vomiting but no temperature.

I'm usually pretty stoic but this has got me so very worried. I'm terrified she's going to loose her leg if the infection can't be controlled!

Don't know why I'm posting. Just need to get this off my chest.

What surgery?

Personally , I would be on phone to OOH. 111. And if still vomiting in a few hours… a&e

Ursula82 · 22/01/2023 10:24

Posting on mumsnet is not going to do a damn thing OP

MeinKraft · 22/01/2023 10:33

What bug is it?

Hi sorry to hear this. The vomiting could be due to the ABs. They might jist have upset her tummy or she may be allergic to them. Just one to think about. A family member really struggled with this....not realising the vomiting was the ABs, because of the vomiting not responding to the ABs and infection deepening. It was all fixed when they changed the ABs.

I hope that she gets better

LIZS · 22/01/2023 14:29

Most swabs have to be grown in the lab so it seems very quick to know definitively. ABs can take a while to kick in. Hope she is ok.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 22/01/2023 14:37

I’m guessing you’re not in the uk, so do you have somewhere you can call for advice?

hisroyalweiner · 22/01/2023 18:09

Not in the UK. DD is in hospital. The swab was grown in the lab and the bacterium is called Aeromonas hydrophilic. The surgeries are debridements (clean out of the wound). Another surgery pending Monday.

I’ll try and post a picture of the knee which was taken in ED (A&E) the other night. It is a bit yucky.

Oh good Lord

op…’y daughter would be in hospital with that. No ifs or buts. I’m speechless tbh

Suzi888 · 22/01/2023 18:11

Go to A&E.
Or ring 111 and they’ll send you.

Suzi888 · 22/01/2023 18:12

The flesh looks black? That could be gangrene. Extremely dangerous.

hisroyalweiner · 22/01/2023 18:13

Please read my post she is in hospital. I’m just very worried as the infection in multi-drug resistant

Shitting hell! Poor DD!

OP, be aware a low temp (36C) is also a sepsis symptom

Ursula82 · 22/01/2023 18:13

Op I’ve just shown my children and all of us are gob smacked that she’s at home and vomiting

I would be beside myself if I were you

She's not at home! She's in hospital!

Maestro12 · 22/01/2023 18:14

I think people are misunderstanding the OP. Her daughter is in hospital still but she’s very worried as she’s googled that the bug causing the infection is antibiotic resistant.

OP - just wanted to say I hope the antibiotics work and your daughter starts to pick up soon. It must be very worrying for you xx

Ursula82 · 22/01/2023 18:14

You are in hospital!!! Surrounded by medics and you’re asking mumsnet for advice?

hisroyalweiner · 22/01/2023 18:14

No, there is no grangrene.

watcherintherye · 22/01/2023 18:15

The op’s dd is already in hospital.

Have you been able to talk with any of the doctors treating her, op?

hisroyalweiner · 22/01/2023 18:16

@Maestro12

thank you. This is it perfectly.

No. She's not. She didn't ask for advice she clearly stated she just needed to get it off her chest because she's scared and this should be somewhere she can get support.

OP you must be terrified and feel utterly powerless. It sounds like the hospital are being as proactive as they can be and you can trust them but it's hard to have so little control when it's your child.

Hope the ABs kick in and she turns a corner in the morning

Ohhhh sorry misread.
Ask a doctor, no one here will know. Hope she feels better soon, try not to worry, she’s in the best place.

determinedtomakethiswork · 22/01/2023 18:17

That looks really nasty. I hope she responds well to medication.

hisroyalweiner · 22/01/2023 18:20

will next see the Orthopedic surgeons before Monday’s surgery.

The ABs have now been changed so hoping it will be ok. Just had a slight panic with finding out about the bacterium, the oozing/smelly leg and the vomiting.

OP posts:
MyOldCaravan · 22/01/2023 18:33

Try not to worry OP, it won't help.

Focus on the positive that's she's in the best place, being looked after.

She's young which is a huge plus in terms of fighting off infection.

Probably best not to keep Googling either. This must be so scary, but dwelling on what may or may not happen won't make you feel any better.

I hope she starts to recover soon.
