Hi there,
over Christmas I got ill with flu/sinusitis and also “took stock” of some of the stuff that’s happened to me this year. I’ve ended up having a surge in anxiety including insomnia.

I’m taking care of myself. As part of that I’m being careful what I watch on tv - anything with too much tension is too much. Even watching “The Great” and “He’s Just not that into you” are too much.

films that have worked so far
“the Three Amigos”
Zoolander
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Sleepless in Seattle
How to lose a guy in 10 days.

so very silly/bonkers comedies and very gentle “innocent” Romcoms with sexiness a plus!

\in terms of tv shows it’s “Superstore” and Big Bang Theory”. All very gentle.

I’d be grateful for more recommendations whilst things settle.

Schitts Creek
Vicar of Dibly

What a lovely thread.

Hope this is helping you OP 💐

My Neighbour Totoro is essentially a dubbed Japanese cartoon but is pretty much about magical forest creatures helping a little girl through a really tough time. It’s a hug of a film.

midsomermurderess · 21/01/2023 23:24

Death in Paradise is a good call too, and Brokenwood if you can get that. On Britbox I think.

Lincolnforever · 21/01/2023 23:25

I use tv as balm too. I quite like things aimed at teenagers. the original gossip girls is a good example ( iplayer). I quite like a series that I can binge as it's a longevity balm!

Lincolnforever · 21/01/2023 23:27

I can't do peril at all now. Korean drama is also good. Second the otiginal French call my agent.

Loopyloooooo · 21/01/2023 23:28

Not a film but you mentioning the three amigos made me think of it..."only murders in the building" on Disney+ is a kind of silly (leave your brain at the door) whodunit series that doesn't take itself seriously but you still want to work out who did it.

lordloveadog · 21/01/2023 23:29

Strong agree for

Ted Lasso
Detectorists

Audiobooks

Light whodunnits

P.G. Wodehouse

GeorgiePorgiePuddingPie · 21/01/2023 23:32

Pushing Daisies. Lee Pace is sublime in it and it’s the absolute sweetest.

SilverCatStripes · 21/01/2023 23:33

Agatha Raisin
new wurzel gummidge

father ted
peep show

Emily in Paris and Jane the Virgin really worked for me. I think it had something to do with the settings. Paris looked amazing in Emily in Paris and all the sunshine in Jane the Virgin plus the really strong female roles had a really soothing effect on my nerves when I was going through an anxious phase last year.

GilChesterton · 21/01/2023 23:37

I'm having a bit of a 'moment' with anxiety and depression right now, so have turned to rewatching Community - so brilliant.

Gilmore girls

DottyDry · 21/01/2023 23:39

Modern Family is my go to when I need something light, funny and feel good. Or Motherland also, is just funny.
Both TV series. Agree with Emily in Paris too.

FlamingoElephant · 21/01/2023 23:40

Not much to do with films but have you tried a weighted blanket?
I suffer with anxiety and it gets bad at night, sometimes to the point of crying myself to sleep. My DM got me a weighted blanket for Christmas and it's been AMAZING!!

Defo worth thinking about!

DottyDry · 21/01/2023 23:42

The Eurovision fire saga film is quite fun too. I wasn't expecting much but loved it

BlackFlyChardonnay · 21/01/2023 23:42

Back to the future trilogy for me. Seen it so many times that it's soothingly predictable.

Tv wise, Friends, for the same reason. Seen it all through many times and know the punchline before they say it.

Books - Richard Osman's three books are great. They absorb you and keep you turning the page, but they're also quite gentle and untaxing.

Another go-to brain distracter for me is Take a Break magazine. If I'm feeling anxious, that takes the edge off. The trashy and outlandish stories plus the brain puzzles are really good at giving you a break from your thoughts.

Old but gold... Bedazzled with Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley is just silly funny and a good laugh.

Also, Superbad.

I love the film Bedazzled. People slate it but I think it’s fab! I’d definitely recommend for a lighthearted watch and I thought Liz Hurley was quite brilliant 😁

Otterock · 22/01/2023 00:00

Bedazzled with Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley is just silly funny and a good laugh.

Have you seen Blast from the Past with Brendan Fraser? That's another good un :)

awakeandanxiouss · 22/01/2023 00:16

The princess diaries
Moana
Tangled
Twilight (I only ever watch this when I’m sad and for some reason it’s a huge comfort watch, I have no idea why!)
Gossip Girl
Fawlty Towers
Downton Abbey
Two Doors Down & Still Game (Scottish programmes and hilarious)
the cleaner with Greg Davies is another good one

IcakedefargeIam · 22/01/2023 00:23

The Princess Bride, endlessly quotable.
Father Ted, go on, go on

Oh, and just one more thing, Columbo.
