Films to relieve anxiety please

Hi there,
over Christmas I got ill with flu/sinusitis and also “took stock” of some of the stuff that’s happened to me this year. I’ve ended up having a surge in anxiety including insomnia.

I’m taking care of myself. As part of that I’m being careful what I watch on tv - anything with too much tension is too much. Even watching “The Great” and “He’s Just not that into you” are too much.

films that have worked so far
“the Three Amigos”
Zoolander
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Sleepless in Seattle
How to lose a guy in 10 days.

so very silly/bonkers comedies and very gentle “innocent” Romcoms with sexiness a plus!

\in terms of tv shows it’s “Superstore” and Big Bang Theory”. All very gentle.

I’d be grateful for more recommendations whilst things settle.

Ted Lasso

EqualFranknessWithYourLadyship · 21/01/2023 21:45

Classic novels also welcome. I was thinking Trollope for instant (Anthony)

Ooh yes that first series of Ted Lasso was lovely - exactly that sort of life-affirming tone is what I’m after.

When Harry Met Sally
Brian and Charles

SuperPug · 21/01/2023 21:47

Man Up. Excellent, very funny and gentle rom
com.
Strictly Ballroom
Chocolat
When Harry Met Sally
8 Women (French musical)

Doyoumind · 21/01/2023 21:49

If you haven't seen it, second series of Ted Lasso isn't as light as the first.

Ivesaidenough · 21/01/2023 21:49

I used to watch Clueless when I needed a comfort film, or Legally Blonde.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 21/01/2023 21:49

Silly comedies:
Joe verses the volcano
Confetti
Dodgeball
Any muppet film pre Disney takeover.

Podcasts of a similar ilk:

I love late 90's/early 00's romcoms. How about the few romcoms that Drew Barrymore did?

50 First Dates
Never Been Kissed
The Wedding Singer
Ever After

And then

13 Going on 30
The Wedding Planner
Sweet Home Alabama
The Sweetest Thing
Elizabethtown

Plus any romcom with Matthew McConaughey in

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 21/01/2023 22:00

films…
10 Things I Hate About You
Emma. (The newest one)
Priceless (Audrey Tatou, French, subtitles, funny comedy, sexy)

Comfort TV…
8 Out of 10 Cat Does Countdown - just silly predictable fun
House of Games - Richard Osman is so gentle.

Msgrieves · 21/01/2023 22:00

When I need comfort I watch old things like golden girls, friends, peep show, father Ted. Films are harder tbh because they are so particular.

Flowers

I’ve just found the Pixar “I lava you” short :)

I even enjoyed listening to “I just called to say I love you” the other day.
it’s not to my taste at all usually!

Old but gold... Bedazzled with Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley is just silly funny and a good laugh.

Also, Superbad.

Just watched The Bank of Dave on Netflix, it's based on a true story. Ok it was a bit sentimental with a North vs South trope but we really enjoyed it.
I like the little man against the establishment thing. It's a feel good film, plus it has Def Leppard in it! ( I'm a Sheffield lass)

merlotlover · 21/01/2023 22:19

Austinland is so sweet and funny and lovely

Never been kissed is fab

I'm so sleepy but I'll try and think of more ❤️

junebirthdaygirl · 21/01/2023 22:20

There is a whole channel now with great romantic movies and some can be just what you need to completely chill.

Also l like The Holiday for an easy watch.
I also find Would l lie to us very funny at times.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/01/2023 22:20

Call My Agent. All very chic and engaging, nothing dark and depressing.

SirChenjins · 21/01/2023 22:20

Calamity Jane - best bit of uplifting popcorn ever!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/01/2023 22:21

While You Were Sleeping. My favourite rom com.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 21/01/2023 22:23

I find documentaries relaxing anything about travel, history, nature, science or space.

Farmageddon · 21/01/2023 22:23

I know they're not comedies, but I find some of the Jane Austen adaptations very relaxing to watch. They're quite slow and not much happens plus it all works out in the end. And even the 'bad' stuff is very tame really.
The ones from the 90's are the best - Persuasion, Sense & Sensibility and Pride & Prejudice.

Also - maybe not your thing but Studio Ghibli movies are generally beautiful to watch, and I find them very calming. Again, sometime bad stuff happens in them, but they're generally quite tame - a bit quirky and weird but quite comforting. Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away are my favourites.

Or for a tv show you could try the updated version of All Creatures Great and Small. Again quite slow and relaxing, occasionally a cow goes missing or something but not much worse than that.

ThatshallotBaby · 21/01/2023 22:25

The Detectorists?
I read Agatha Christie and Jane Austen when I feel anxious. Hope you feel better soonFlowers
Hang on in there
