Ikea Hemnes Day Bed

Holliejollie22 · 21/01/2023 20:51

I’m considering replacing the double bed in my spare room with a sofa bed and was wondering if the Ikea Hemnes day bed would suit. If anyone has one, I’d love to know how you find it. It would mostly be used by my mum about 4 times a year, she’s in her 70s and usually stays about a week.

Primary reason for wanting to swap it out is because I use the room to WFH at least a couple of days a week and the double bed gets in the way of putting my desk where I’d like to.

We had one in the kids room and it was ok, but as with all ikea stuff I find it wears pretty quickly.

We ended up replacing it with an expensive sofa bed with a memory foam mattress which I’m very glad about, it’s as comfy as an actual bed.

one of my absolute pet hates is going to stay at other peoples houses and being on lumpy / old / uncomfortable sofa beds or occasional beds which are done on the cheap as they’re not used that much, I’d definitely spend a bit more and get something really nice that your getting-old mum will find comfortable to stay on

I think it’s fine, we have proper single mattresses on them. Use it as a day time sitting area/ napping bed usually as it is in the WFH office. Useful for when we have people over

Twotwotwotwo · 21/01/2023 21:04

works well for us but is quite hard because of the sliding mechanism/thin mattresses. That suits us as a family of (very) firm bed lovers. But it wouldn’t work for everyone.

We had one for years, used as a sofa in the study and very occasional bed for visitors. Do get the proper mattresses for it - we had some non IKEA jobs and they didn't fit brilliantly, but visitors did say they were comfortable.

We sold ours on FB a few months ago and got a surprisingly excellent price for it, considering it was over 20 years old.

QforCucumber · 21/01/2023 21:13

We have it in the spare room, used for mil maybe once every 3 months - we bought their foam mattresses for it; I’ve also slept on it with ds2 when he’s been poorly, it’s great for the odd night or 2 but I’d only ever use it as a spare never as an everyday bed

mafsfan · 21/01/2023 21:13

We have one as our second spare so occasional use - three or four times a year.

The mattresses for it are thinner than standard singles so that they can stack when the bed is pushed back together. We spent quite a lot on a decent mattress topper which makes the mattresses a lot more comfortable and also stops it feeling like two singles pushed together. Absolutely worth the money!

Also get the proper fitting ikea sheets - 160cm x 200cm when it is pulled out, deep 80cm x 200cm for when it is pushed in.

It's a great spare bed. Love the storage as well!

herefortheparty · 21/01/2023 22:36

I've slept on one as a guest. Perfectly comfy and spacious - BUT - it's quite difficult to get out of if there are two of you in it and you are the one on the enclosed side!
So middle of the night trips to the loo involve disturbing your partner and lots of sort of shuffling and wriggling and duvet displacement.
I really don't think my parents ie: elderly people or people with any sort of mobility issues would manage it on the 'inside' side.

BasiliskStare · 21/01/2023 22:40

We have one and I think for one person it is good as fairly wide. I've spent nights on ours & perfectly comfortable. What I would do if you want it as a sofa as well is have some back cushions made so you can lean back properly - but yes I would do it.

EdHelpPls · 21/01/2023 22:44

My kids have them. They love them and I think they look lovely and would buy again, however....
Dont put drawer pulls on. Killer on the backs of your legs! Easy to open without them, or use a fabric pull.
Get a decent mattress. Ones we got are fine for the kids but I couldn't sleep on it regularly.

Provide plenty of cushions or pillows if using as to a sofa as the top rail kinda thing sticks out into the bed space.

Consider the fact there's no headboard for one person if pulling into a double bed. Fine if against a wall.

Shunkleisshiny · 21/01/2023 23:10

I have one in our guest room, we don't have people stay all that often so I didn't want a double bed taking up too much room ( it's really my dressing room😄)

I had a cover for the mattresses and bolsters made by an upholsterer and it looks really nice.
We have friends visiting in the summer for a fortnight and I will probably get a mattress topper for it, as my friend has a back problem.

Holliejollie22 · 22/01/2023 15:42

Thanks everyone, that’s all really useful feedback, and it sounds like I should definitely keep it on the list, and consider a mattress topper. She definitely won’t be sharing with anyone - or at least I hope not 😂

We have one and DS1 sleeps on it all the time since he came back home to us (a long story ...)

But I bought proper spring mattresses to replace the original thin/foam ones that we bought, so it's more like a 'proper' bed IYSWIM. I think we're going to buy a double topper too, which means that I'll also buy double sheets, rather than putting sheets on each single mattress - he sleeps with it pulled out all the time.

I'd definitely recommend it - the storage element is great too.

Can anyone recommend mattresses or toppers for the hemnes? We would like to get one but not sure what to be looking out for

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 13/04/2024 22:38

We have one in the spare room. I've slept on it for up to a week at a time when I've given up my bedroom for guests. I don't bother pulling it out into a double bed and just sleep on it as a single with the two mattresses stacked. It is very comfortable like this.

@ShirleyPhallus I don't suppose you have a link for the sofa bed you now have please?

You have to buy 2'6" mattresses (or toppers) for them. (I think this converts to 80cm x 200cm)

DilemmaDelilah · 14/04/2024 08:53

If it's just for your mum does she need a double bed? You might be able to get a more comfortable single day bed than one which converts to a double.

JoJothegerbil · 14/04/2024 08:55

We bought the IKEA 80cm mattresses but I thought they were a bit hard so I bought a memory foam topper for it. I just fold this up and leave it on top, covered with a throw when it's not being used.

We bought the most expensive 160cmx200cm topper ikea sell so we knew it would be the right size! It's lovely and thick and makes the bed much more comfy.

Unfortunately it was Made.com a long time ago now and they’ve stopped trading I thought, they do have click clack style ones but I think the ones you pull out of the sofa are better. Look for that style and memory foam mattress
