Looking for some new podcasts for 2023. I really love something a bit scary (not terrifying), funny and some true crime. I love My Favourite Murder, Witch Farm, My Dad Wrote a Porno and I've listened to lots of true crime.

Any new ideas would be great. Thank you

For a bit scary I loved Uncanny by Danny Robins.

Also loved Uncanny (think it's by same guy as The Witch Farm).

Sweet Bobby was great - just unbelievable.

I don’t like most true crime, but I like Strictly Stalking and Trust Me - both told in the first person by people with experience of stalking and cults.

I really like Dan Snow's History Hit. It's just a great way of learning something I didn't know much about while cooking dinner. He has excellent authors/historians as guests. I love history, so it's right up my alley.
I also enjoy In Our Time. It's a bit 'stuffy' but it's good.
There's an American true crime podcast that I adore called Necronomipod.
I'm American so I get the presentation and the humour (very much 3 guys, sitting in the basement, drinking beer, telling dick jokes, AND talking about true crime. Don't be fooled by the laughs and banter; these dudes do their research and their podcast is excellent and very popular for a reason. I do giggle when they do a show on a British case and they trip over the pronunciation of words like Ly-cester, wor-ses-ter-shire, etc.).

I also like another American one called Cold Cases (parcast). Good presenter.

Oh and this is an excellent one: David Ridgen. All of his stuff is great. Lots of Canadian true crime stuff. The Next Call is what his podcast is called.
Another great Canadian true crime podcaster is journalist Connie Walker who focuses on crimes against indigenous women. Excellent. However, I think David Ridgen is one of the best I've ever heard.

Swindled is fantastic

SpacersChoice · 19/01/2023 10:08

The Vanished - missing people, interviews with relatives and update episodes always done.

Hard Landings - aircraft disasters discussed by 3 people, detailed and explained well, the only none monotone podcast on the subject.

CaveMum · 19/01/2023 10:16

I'm a podcast addict! I have so many on the go but it means I have something to listen to every day!

This is a post I wrote on another thread asking for recommendations, some are ongoing series and some are limited series:

My list - if I do a full description I’ll be here all night but you can look them up and see if they appeal!

On BBC Sounds:
The Infinite Monkey Cage (science/comedy)
You’re Dead To Me (history/comedy)
The Confessional (interviews/comedy)
Now You’re Asking (discussion/comedy)
Evil Genius (history/personalities/comedy)
The Missing Crypto Queen (true crime, limited series)
Grounded With Louis Theroux (interviews)
The Lazarus Heist (North Korea, limited series)
The Coming Storm (US politics/QAnon, limited series)
Newscast (daily politics and current affairs)
Americast (US politics)
Boris (biographical profile of you know who, limited series)

On Spotify only:
Parenting Hell with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdecombe (parenting/comedy)

Available on most podcast platforms (though I use Apple Podcasts):
The Rest is Politics (politics with Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart)
The Rest is Politics: Leading (interviews, brand new series only started this week so only 1 episode so far!)
American History Hit (US history)
Crime Analyst (true crime but very victim focussed and discussion on VAWG)
Dan Snow’s History Hit (history)
Kermode & Mayo’s Take (film reviews)
How To Fail With Elizabeth Day (interviews)
No Such Thing As A Fish (comedy/facts with the QI elves)
Not Just The Tudors (history)
Real Crime Profile (true crime, fascinating and a real eye opener)
Taskmaster The Podcast (to accompany the TV Show)
The Game Changers: Fearless Women in Sport (sport)
Fake Doctors Real Friends (a listen along for the tv show Scrubs)
The Rewatcher (Buffy The Vampire Slayer episodes reviewed)
The West Wing Weekly (The West Wing episodes reviewed)

Of those I'd say that Parenting Hell, Real Crime Profile, The Infinite Monkey Cage, You're Dead To Me and The Rest Is Politics are my favs!

That should give you enough to be going on with!

Rainbowdrops2021 · 19/01/2023 10:20

They walk among us, it’s a uk true crime podcast and I’m addicted.

CaveMum · 19/01/2023 10:28

Just adding a bit more background to Real Crime Profile (which I think you'd really enjoy!). There are 3 presenters: an ex-FBI profiler (Jim Clemente), an ex-Scotland Yard and domestic violence campaigner (Laura Richards) and the "average person" who asks lots of questions (Lisa Zambeti).

They've been going for years and have over 400 episodes. They cover some very high profile cases (OJ Simpson, Meredith Kercher, Madeleine McCann, Jeffrey Epstein for example) as well as cases not familiar to me (most are US focussed). They talk about the cases around Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, etc.

Most cases take several episodes to cover as they go really in depth, but what is so great is that they are victim-focussed - it's never about giving lots of air time to the criminal or the gory details of the crime itself, it's about the victims and who they were as well as going through the procedural nature of each case and how law enforcement handled it and any subsequent court cases.

www.realcrimeprofile.com/

If you do like it then one of my other recommendations, Crime Analyst, will also be great as that is Laura Richards on her own looking at a variety of cases from the point of view of her time at Scotland Yard. She also talks to a lot of domestic violence campaigners who are often survivors of horrific abuse.

Following as need recommendations! Thanks for these.

HRTQueen · 19/01/2023 10:48

I love podcasts especially history and crime. I would recommend the following

You’re Dead to Me
Evil Genius (so pleased new episode released today)
Short History (Noiser podcasts are extremely well presented and researched)
Infamous America
Stuff You Should Know
All Killa no Filla
British Scandal (recent Boris Johnson episodes are very interesting)
Crime Junkie
Criminal (some of the stories are very touching)
The Explorers Podcast
Ridiculous History
You Must Remember This (about scandals, I do find presenters voice a little annoying though)

has anyone got any good recommendations for London History ?

Enko · 19/01/2023 10:51

If you like true crime. The. Crime weekly with Stephanie Harlowe and Derrick Lavasa (I think that's how he spells it) mostly American but deep dives and often known cases..

Not crime but I do love beautiful anonymous. Its just about people's lives and what is going on with them. Fascinating

lightinthemirrorstormyoutside · 19/01/2023 11:04

Thanks all so much - I'm spoilt for choice :)

OP posts:
CaveMum · 19/01/2023 11:06

@HRTQueen thanks for the heads up on the new Evil Genius episode!

Re London History podcasts, I can't think of any specifics but it might be worth scrolling through History Hit and Not Just The Tudors to see if they have any specific episodes.

Ravageur · 19/01/2023 11:07

The white vault!!!

IHaveEmotionalMotionSickness · 19/01/2023 11:08

Clinton Baptiste’s paranormal podcast. He’s a ‘clairvoyant’ from Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights that now has his own podcast. Its an utter pisstake and hilarious

PotatoSmile · 19/01/2023 11:11

The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry on BBC Sounds. Adam Rutherford and Hannah Fry talking about sciencey questions. Listeners send in their questions and they answer them. It's funny, informative and the presenters are great together. It's one that's suitable for kids to listen to as well if they are around but also fine for adults.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 19/01/2023 11:11

I'm not into the true crime thing at all.

The only podcast I really listen to is Backlisted where guests talk about a favourite and often forgotten(ish) book.

CaveMum · 19/01/2023 11:17

I'd also add the Martin Lewis Podcast (BBC Sounds). I know it's not a "fun" podcast but there's lots of financial info on there each week which may help people in the current economic climate.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 19/01/2023 11:27

The Lovecraft Investigations is a BBC drama in the form of a true crime podcast. VG
