Looking for some new podcasts for 2023. I really love something a bit scary (not terrifying), funny and some true crime. I love My Favourite Murder, Witch Farm, My Dad Wrote a Porno and I've listened to lots of true crime.

Any new ideas would be great. Thank you

Thank you CaveMum I shall look them up

if you have Audio Stephen Fry series on Victorians, Edwardians and the Roaring 20’s is really interesting and brilliantly presented

FrenchandSaunders · 19/01/2023 11:38

Wolf and Owl, very funny

lightinthemirrorstormyoutside · 19/01/2023 13:16

I've been listening to the Monday Night Revue - she talks about a wide variety of crime and mystery stuff, often serial killers, but occasionally unsolved situations like the Jon Benet Ramsey murder.

She's also doing the very occasional A-Z of London tube stations / areas where crimes happened. Might satisfy the London itch someone mentioned upthread.

I started Teachers Pet today. Really enjoying it.

I only like 'true crime' if it's basically fraud/grift. I don't want to hear about violence, as a rule.

I'm listening to Imperfect Paradise right now about (true story) Yoga teacher turned Covid conspiracy person. It's like a true crime story.

if you enjoy a bit of true crime = grift, try "George Santos" in your podcast search engine. That guy is a grifty gift that keeps on giving. NYTimes has best single episode on him.

Serious Trouble (=podcast name) covers mostly American characters & their legal woes but... some of them are hitting international headlines. Bankman Fried, Elon Musk, Donald Trump.

Jewel1968 · 21/01/2023 23:14

I like:
You are not so smart
West Cork
The Dropout
Morality of everyday things
Serial

Highly recommend "Death in Ice Valley" on the BBC sounds app.

SonicBoo · 22/01/2023 01:03

If you have dark humour then I really recommend The Creep Dive. It's 3 Irish women who are friends and they cover all kinds of weird things that have happened over the years. They discuss a few things per episode so lots going on. I've been binge listening but I really enjoyed it.

Other podcasts I like are Help I Sexted My Boss, Clinton Baptise, The Poisoners Cabinet and Adam Buxton.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 22/01/2023 01:17

*There's an American true crime podcast that I adore called Necronomipod.

I'm American so I get the presentation and the humour (very much 3 guys, sitting in the basement, drinking beer, telling dick jokes, AND talking about true crime. Don't be fooled by the laughs and banter; these dudes do their research and their podcast is excellent and very popular for a reason. I do giggle when they do a show on a British case and they trip over the pronunciation of words like Ly-cester, wor-ses-ter-shire, etc.)*

This is my new favourite. Mrs Hildebrandt! I was shaking laughing with that one. Any podcast that smuggles Kermit singing the Kokomo into a Charlie Manson episode gets my vote!

I really enjoy Hollywood Crimescene, they have a very wide scope of episodes and are equally hilarious.

Thecatisboss · 22/01/2023 08:37

Hallie Rubenhold has done 2 series on Jack the Ripper and the Blackout Ripper killers in London focusing on the victims which are very good. Lucy Worsley has done a podcast on ladykillers which is good too on Victorian women killers.

TravellingSpoon · 22/01/2023 08:45

Generation Why is my favourite. They often look at cases where there has been some legal incompetence.

I also liked all three series of Dr Death.

Just a note about the creep dive, if you're in any way gender critical the presenters of this podcast are not. It's a funny podcast but they do come across as a bit handmaidens to the patriarchy iyswim. But if that doesn't bother you, crack on.

Yes, I know what you mean. I'm still listening to 2021 episodes so not sure if they get more into gender and political topics but I've found that it's subtle comments and not constantly discussed. They're also much more lefty than I am but I've still been enjoying their podcast as it is funny and entertaining.

Ditto You’re Wrong About, can’t listen to them anymore. Even misogynist Mike leaving hasn’t helped.

Oh absolutely.
I can't believe how anti women Mike's articles in the huff post were. Just appalling.

On a more superficial note, I can't listen to You're Wrong About anymore because of Sarah's vocal fry 😬

Testarossa44 · 22/01/2023 10:46

I like The Generally Spooky Podcast, scottish history with a ghost element.

The Haunted UK Podcast, spooky stories

The Poisoner's Cabinet - cocktails and stories of historical murders.

Buzz the tower - discussing movies from the 80's

MaureenSowerbuttsCardi · 22/01/2023 11:17

Also, Do Go On is amazing. Hosted by 3 Australians, they take it in turns to cover a topic in history each week. Their humour is right up my street. Most episodes make me laugh out loud but the one about the Principality of Sealand has to be the funniest podcast episode I have ever heard. I was in kinks listening to it.🤣

Another recommendation for Parenting hell, and A slob comes clean if anyone is interested in decluttering

Sucessinthenewyear · 22/01/2023 12:53

Paradise, End of Days and On the Ground all on BBC sounds.

Pls can someone give me an idiots guide to different podcast platform. I only used BBC sounds, what else can/should I use?

HRTQueen · 22/01/2023 13:00

Spotify, Amazon or just the Podcast app if you have an iPhone

Emdubz · 22/01/2023 13:08

My favourites on Spotify:

UK True Crime
The Missing- some really haunting true cases of people who have been missing for years

Also, The Troubles, about the conflict in Northern Ireland.

flabbygoldfish · 22/01/2023 13:17

From BBC Sounds I enjoyed
Chasing Charlie (true story)
I am not a Monster (true story)
Factory Girls
Where is George Gibney? (true story but very disturbing about child abuse by a swimming coach)
